TPCi will be dropping production of the dub by the end of XY and handing it to someone else. It will also no longer be aired on Cartoon Network (they have already begun removing it completely from CN On Demand as a result of this and have majorly cutback on its current airtime in order to make the transition smooth, as soon as XYZ per contract obligation finishes the show will be completely dropped).

The show starting with Sun and Moon will be distributed exclusively on streaming services. Pokemon TV will receive episodes first, and after a few weeks of exclusivity they will be put up on Netflix and Hulu. In addition this will allow the dub and original version to be near simultaneous in their airing schedules (in accordance with the games now releasing worldwide). The music will also no longer be changed, but YMMV on voices.

That makes no sense. SOMEONE has to be dubbing it for that to work, and it would cost more for them to do that than it does to do what they're doing now. And the matter the dub is behind also makes that flipping stupid since in order to do that, they would need to be making two eps a week, one for the end of XYZ and the other for SM until XYZ is over for the dub.

Not sure if it's true but the TPCi dub has become so unpopular and sunk so far in quality these days that even CN may drop it and it may go online alone. That's a testament to how awful TPCi are as dubbers, as if being worse than 4Kids wasn't enough.

No, it wasn't, the dub actually had solid voice acting early on and the script had wit and was mostly faithful to the original (except TR, but TPCi made it way worse when they took over), Movie 1 and Chronicles notwithstanding.

The dub also kept a majority of the Japanese OST early on, which isn't the case now, and the intros were double the length they are now.

The dub has gone very downhill since TPCi took over from 4Kids in general, desu.

It's like I'm talking to a brick wall here, but here's why 4Kids dub was better than TPCi's in a nutshell:

1) Better voice acting where characters were given fitting voices and the actors could actually emote.

2) The script writing didn't interject slang and alliterations everywhere like TPCi's dub does, especially notable with Ash and TR past 4Kids tenure.

3) 4Kids kept more of the Japanese OST than TPCi did at this point.

4) 4Kids intros were double the length of TPCi's and weren't cheesy friendship or rocker wannabe songs.

No, all the dub has done script wise since DP is give characters dialogue fit for people at least double their ages and has TR rhyme and alliterate constantly (stopped for a bit in BW, but dub went back to shit in Episode N with this). In terms of Pokemon 4kids changes were, barring some extremes like jelly donuts and the sandwich incident, generally all well in good.

They punched up a joke, or switched up a minor line. It wasn't a faithful dub but it was still watchable despite that.

Actors were decent, the changed new music was alright, and the revised scripts were still likable.

4Kids' problem is they started to skew away from younger skewing anime. One Piece or Tokyo Mew Mew are kids shows in Japan, but they also have a lot of things US censors will have issues with. Like Zakuro's cross, or Robin's cleavage.

When 4kids dubbed shows like Dinosaur King, or Pokemon they were generally pretty fine because all they did most of the time was punch up the scripts a bit.

They pretty were necessary because Pokemon, One Piece, Tokyo Mew Mew and etc. were all airing on a Saturday morning kids' block, so it's more of the network's doing anyway. And you're right about US censorships laws being different than what goes on in Japan. One Piece should've never been on there anyway because even though it's pretty humorous it's also has blood/violence and sexual shit.

The jelly doughnut thing was justifiable because kids watching Pokemon in the US back in the 90's don't even know what a rice ball is. (Though they did call it a rice ball in the episode where Ash meets the photographer kid.)

Movie 2 wasn't dubbed well vs. a lot of 4Kids' Pokemon dub material, so that's not a good gauge of its quality as they got better over time with the Movie dubs.

They did keep about 6% of the Japanese music with TR themes in that dub, though, but it blows compared to their later Movie dubs that kept 98% of the music.

Either way, beats how TPCi has ended up in recent years.

I feel liek this is because sub has much more freedom to have it say what they want. The dub probably has certain requirements like things have to match up more which makes it harder to sound normal in english

To be fair, unlike TPCi who got worse over time dubbing the Movies (17 and 18's dubs should speak for themselves, guys), 4Kids scripting got far more accurate from Movie 3 to the end of their run...but Movie 2's script was off quite a bit dubbed...not as bad as Movie 1's dub script by any means, but still quite off.

Well, when you've had a few Japanese courses, years of watching anime and self study of the language and cultural things, you can piece together what the writers were aiming for from context yourself.
It's just a better experience when it's Japanese dubbing. It does help, like you said, that the translators have the freedom to give the actual meaning, though.

It's why TMNT worked out. Because Mirage was willing to push back at the censors and do things like the banned Insane in the Membrane, or the attempted Nightmare Recycled episode.

For example the Shaman King and Yu-Gi-Oh uncut DVDs sold pretty well, but 4kids deemed them "unprofitable" because they never wanted to do them in the first place. They did try to evolve with the changing Anime market eventually but the damage was done.

Cathcart and TPCi, however, confuse injecting copious amounts of slang, rhyme, and alliteration for humor in the current dub's scripting, which is quite terrible as a whole.
