I've been watching early episodes of the anime. Newer episodes really DO feel different but I can't pin down what. What changed from Kanto to Hoenn, maybe even Johto? Kanto still followed the same formula yet it seems more energetic and easier to watch. I like newer episodes but there's something different about the originals...

Was it due to Ash's personality? Nowadays he's so sweet and nice. He outgrew his stubborn and more bratty side years ago but that doesn't leave much besides a cute, happy kid with some generic shonen protagonist traits.

It would be like counting the fights if Ash beat Alan as he's trying to get his Charizard to control Mega evolution.
