Sure it is, but you'd have to be pretty damn lucky. When I bought a Roaring Skies Booster Box for ~$100, I got a single Shaymin EX (full art) which now goes for $70 on Amazon I think.

I'm sure that alongside the other cards, I could've turned a profit if I hadn't held onto the majority of the cards. Most of the cards that hold any value, I've found, are the Mega EX and Full Art cards. For example, if you pull a Professor Sycamore (Full Art) from a Steam Siege Elite Trainer Box, that pays for nearly the whole thing.

Not even remotely worth it if, but pretty exciting if you like gambling your money for a small return.

Any other physical collectors here?
I've just started up recently and want to know how you go about collecting.
What I've been doing so far is buying up booster packs, but I'm starting to get to the point where the only new cards I'm getting are the rare and an uncommon or two and maybe a couple of commons.
So I'm looking at filling out the rest of my set by buying cards online.
Is there a better way of completing sets? Or should I just buy individual cards from the get-go?

Singles will always be the best option I believe. $4 for a booster with 10 cards, but most of those cards can be bought between $0.10 and $7, the bulk of non-foil Trainer cards being under a dollar if I'm not mistaken.

When you say collect, do you mean collecting sets or assembling relevant decks? Because I can appreciate somebody buying tins and boxes for the containers, sleeves, collector's booklets, etc.

Coming from other card games, the draw power and consistency in PTCG seems fucking insane, cards like Sycamore and Tierno especially. If card advantage isn't a big deal, what's the main win condition for most decks? I feel most of the time you can just run away with games if you get a big guy with energy, your opponent just can't catch up.

That's the impression a lot of MtG/YGO/etc players get when they see Sycamore. Tierno's considered a bad card, by the way.

The reason why the nuts consistency isn't that big a deal is because the huge hand size doesn't influence the board state that much.
You can still only attach one energy per turn.
You can still only use one attack per turn.
There's no removal or way to directly control the board, so resources don't matter in the same way.

The depth and skill in Pokemon comes primarily from statistical analysis and prediction. Do I Sycamore away this DCE and hope I pull what I need, or do I wait a turn so I can attach? What are the chances my opponent has a Lysandre/Hex/etc in their hand? Will this Giovanni's surprise my opponent? Which attack should I use? Who should I commit energies to? Can I work around my prizes? And most of the depth, like in most other card games, comes from the deck building phase where you're choosing your lineup and techs; Pokemon's looser requirements means you're not as pigeonholed into a color/archtype like in MtG/YGO.

Pokemon's overall a much shallower game than most other TCGs, mainly thanks to the lack of player interaction, but the consistency options give it a niche. It's one of the few TCGs where, for the most part, your opponent can't completely stop you from having fun, and you can almost always achieve your deck's main goal.

The skeleton is
>4-3 M Garde
>4 Shaymin
>3 Hoopa EX
>4 Super Rod
>3 Ninja Boy
And then tech in basics as you please. You turbo out turn one since you're running 7 fucking Shaymin and Hoopa, then safely discard them when needed to dodge Lysandre. Ninja Boy fixes bad starts and lets you set up for free.
It's even better in Expanded because you get to use safe Jirachi EXs (searches for Ninja Boy too) and have access to Eggs.
Sky Field is preferred, but you can also roll Dimension Valley for Max Potion shenanigans.

Because you want to discard every card you don't need. Most of the time you only need to set up one or two pokemon in order to win. If unnecessary cards are discarded, your drawing cards/effects got higher chance to give you something useful. Also, most of the time people use cards/attacks to pull stuff out from the discard pile.

For reference, one of the decks being streamed in the World Finals right now uses only Pokemon from two years ago.
TPCi doesn't like to push product like YGO and there's no power creep within a format.

I had a Versus Ladder game a couple of days ago where my opponent took about 10 minutes just to get through their mulligan phase. At the end they finally played Lugia EX as their active, and I had about half of my deck in my hand.
I went first. I played Nidoran as my active and putting a two Solosis and two Nidoran on my bench. I attached one psychic energy and an Assault Vest to my Nidoran before ending my turn, in case of some Lugia Aero Ball double colorless energy shenanigans.
My opponent then did some shit I don't remember then attached an energy to Lugia EX and ended their turn.
I evolved my Nidorans and Solosis' and then sacrificed my rare candy and Nidoran to summon the mighty Nidobro in Attack mode. Attaching a second energy to my Nidobro, it seemed perhaps my opponent would survive another turn.. until I played Dimension Valley and proceeded to poke his Lugia EX for about 180 damage.
TLDR: 20 minutes for a victory on my second turn.

So on your first draw, there's 34% Talonflame, 26% Froakie start, and 40% mulligan. Each mulligan you will have a 34% chance of a Talonflame start. So your cumulative probability is:

This is a geometric series. The sum is:
