I figure out that ShoPro need to established that in order for Ash to become a pokemon master, he have to build an ultimate Pokemon Team out of Monsters from All the Regions in the world. All it did was establish Alain as a Team Flare threat. The problem was that it was their third battle, and the league was at stake. Had we been at the very end of the series like in dp, Ash would have won. Strangely, the league of only being used as a stepping stone for xy&z's climax, so it's leaving a very sour taste in the mouth of its viewership since we're used to it being the be all end all of the series. We're in a very strange spot.

Battle damage portrayal in this series is so arbitrary it's infuriating. Remember when Charizard got drilled into a mountain by Steven or got hit by Dragon Ascent? Looked clean in the end.
