I know people made fun of it like the moral lesson was "hard work doesn't pay off" but I don't think that's what they're trying to say.

Some may not like it but both of them actually worked hard. People that shit on Ash saying he only depended on a special snowflake power were wrong since he also trained hard with that special power. The same goes for Alan who battled every day like a crazy lunatic. The difference was the way they lived their life.

Ash actually had fun with the journey together with his friends. Alan cut off people and he did nothing but train to get stronger. Remember how the start of XYZ, Ash and friends were smiling while Alan was alone when they crossed paths? That's something consistent we see.

Even when Alan won, we get this shot of him being alone in a dark room with some light shining in compared to Ash who was surrounded by friends and smiling in a bright room. Alan couldn't even enjoy the victory and was again thinking about fighting more and getting stronger. So just saying it may not be the result everyone wanted but they're not really mocking anyone when they show Ash and company smiling. "There's more to life than just winning a contest" is just not the moral lesson most people wanted but it's also a common one that's been there from the start.
