I've said it before and I'll say it again. Amour DID have a purpose. For whatever reason people think that them not getting together means it was "pointless". Amour was mostly to have Serena (and Ash to a lesser extent) grow and develop. Because of Ash Serena realized her potential, and because of her feelings for him she got him out of slumps or when he was dragging his feat. It was also cute, and funny. But it was primarily used for the former. That was it's purpose.

Is there anything in-universe about ties in a Tournament? I personally would have liked them to tie, with either a best 2 outta 3 sort of deal (but gets interrupted by Flare before it happens) or they both become champions (Team Flare interrupts, Ash v Alan, Alan loses and forfeits the trophy cause Ash is the "real winner.")

Dunno if this has happened in previous seasons since I have dropped the series for a while, but I do find interesting that the Flare Arc is AFTER the League is done for rather than beforehand.

It actually makes the stakes more focused than in the game where it's "Oh you saved the entire world!...now go and fight the league like always"

That was when Toriyama's skills as a mangaka were at its peak. Honestly, the 23rd TB had less quality in the writing, and was kinda shoehorned by his editor and the battle hunger readers (they wanted more exaggerated battles like the ones from Saint Seiya, Bastard and a debutant Jojo).

Adding more salt, in the Naruto-style epilogue Ash will be recognized not as a Pokemon master, but unironically as a "rematch master" (because he won the leagues offscreen in his second wind), maybe his son will be shown downplaying his assets.

A character who always wins is always worse. There is no exception.

The point, if i had to guess it, is that Ash has gone from needing validation to simply enjoying battles outright. In previous seasons you see him crying like a child when he loses, but in this season he loses the fight with a smile and barely seems effected by it. Let it sink in that the people on this board are saltier than ANY of the characters are.

This moral works perfectly in a franchise that encourages you to battle your friends. "Hey kid, when you lose, try and enjoy the battle and not be a salty little bitch! Entitled cunts rarely make alot of friends! You can't always get what you want, there's always someone better, enjoy what you have!" Any of those themes are pretty decent, pick whichever one you want.

I have TONS of problems with this anime, but if you think that Ash not winning this particular tournament highlights the real issues this shitshow has, you're beyond help.

The thing with DP is that no one actually thought ash would win once the league started since it pulled the then usual "oh hey look there's this new really strong guy who just showed up to the league" thing. Ash's story arc ended with defeating paul at the league (which it did exceptionally well). This season completely fucked up the entire mini arc about Greninja by making him drop like a bitch, not even giving a good fight and also fucked up at the one point in the last fifteen years that people thought ash had an actual chance of winning.

What it teaches is that no matter how hard you work and how much you accomplish, nothing will come of it in the end. They've hammered this in for six seasons, and in this season the most considering how strong he got and that it's the last real league he'll be in.

This particular tournament exemplifies the issues, because this was a culmination of all of Ash's hard work and experience, finally being at the top of the region and even clearly winning the final fight, but being denied the victory ONLY to maintain the status quo. In Kanto he lost because he wasn't prepared, in Sinnoh he went out in a blaze of glory and defeated his rival, but here he lost to his rival every single time AND the league.

He wasn't smiling because he just enjoys fighting, he was smiling because they turned him into a fucking emotionless robot who feels nothing. That is not relatable in any fucking way. We don't see him get over it, we just don't see any reaction at all, so kids learn fucking nothing except why bother trying.
