Well if a Totem Pokemon decides it wants to get stronger nothing is stopping it from going off with a Trainer of its choice to do so.

I could see one of the Pokemon Ash gets is either a Pokemon who wants to become a Totem Pokemon or a Totem Pokemon who wants to travel with Ash because he is strong and an interesting guy.

Kind of like Hawlucha who was strong and a protector of the forest but went off with Ash to fight tough opponents and get stronger with Ash.

It was his style of fighting and he stuck to his guns, Ash only helped him make the attack faster so that Hawluchas opponents wouldn't have the chance to recover as he gets into position.

That episode was great and definitely worth a rewatch. Hawlucha seemed like a serious Pokemon but he turned out to be one of the most comedic and lovable of the XY cast. He might actually be my favorite.

The main plot is Georgia seeking strong dragon trainers and legendary dragons to battle and defeat, Conway is along because that'll be a good opportunity for him to research legendaries and maybe make a career of it, and Yancy is just there to make some memories with her new friends.

It'd start in Unova, searching for Zekrom and Reshiram, but an encounter with Drayden would have them detour to Sinnoh to learn more about the dragons of time and space. While there Yancy will try out contests and decide that she misses the idol life, but a new idol and contest winner has taken her place and they have to battle it out on the stage to determine who is the best. Georgia never finds the Sinnoh dragons, but does end up running into a battling a mysterious green haired guy with Reshiram, while Conway makes good on his dream and eventually wins Dawn.

I think Sun/Moon is the best chance for Ash to RETAIN some of his character growth and not be more or less reset.

If the island trials are what they sound like, they're less about battling (though I'm sure that'll still be apart) and more involving, well, random tasks but in a good way. Ash has always been able to think out of the box so he'll probably do well, and they won't need to cut down on his competence as a trainer because him being superior to most people he battles doesn't matter as much now that gyms and the league aren't the end goal.
