Being the massive fag I am, I introduced a rule that if something dies to the first trainer in a gym it doesn't count (as to scout out levels without spoiling teams) on my semi blind Y run and holy shit has it saved my ass so many times. I wasn't expecting the fairy gym to have level 40s, there was like 5 trainers between Clement and this gym. Honestly, Ys level scaling is utterly fucked for the most part, and grinding on the swamp route is giving out shit xp. It's not fun.

I think im going to try a run, not nuzlocke, and I'm going to teach all my Pokemon, only metronome.

I did a run a while back, kept losing everything but 1.

Heracross.

He was level 74 fighting Giovanni because all my Pokemon kept dying except for him.

Ended up beating the elite 4 with a level 82 heracross, a 46 onix(dead), a level 36 arbok (dead) and a level 41 seadra (dead)

It was tricky as hell but I did it.

So I'm trying this for the first time on a Fire Red romhack (it has the special/physical split and opens up the naitonal dex right away)

So I have a question about the "first pokemon in each area" rule:

What exactly counts as an "area"? For instance, Clefairy is caught in Mt. Moon but only on particular floors. If "area" means all of mount moon then it's literally impossible to get a clefairy on a run like this, which strikes me as bullshit. But maybe "area" just means places gated by changes in spawn rates or something?

It depends. Most people do if it has a different name. I know some people ine Blaze Black 1/2 count outside the desert and inside the desert as different catchs.

It's really up to you to decide but I would say don't be one of those people whoe will go up a ladder and say its a new area, then go through a cave door and say its a new area.

Althoug I'm probably at just the right level to do the next sidequests, I'm going to hold off on doing any more for now since they've made me overleveled for the main game by about 6 levels.

I think it's interesting that playing with dupe clause there are areas in each game that can kinda be manipulated to give you nice things, like specifically areas that have at the most three or four encounters, with the commons being a high percentage, but since you already caught the common a long time ago, you're almost guaranteeing a non-shitmon.

Honestly I see it as a balance quirk, you're getting something good now to make up for starting off with throwaway captures, and there is strategy within the dupe clause, you could theoretically ignore certain areas and come back later once more captures have been made.

BW2 literally has a near hour long tutorial you have to go through just to get to the first Gym.

Just finally managed to beat the second gym in Y after 3 failed attempts. This time around I figured out that the amount of XP is not split between the pokes that have participated, but everyone gets the same amount of XP as they would've when battling alone (For some reason I've always thought it was split). Roxanne was not easy.
I overestimated Lotad's bulk and even after a Growl Nosepass was nearly 2HKOing with Rock Tomb.

Fortunately Lotad finished it off with a 4-hit Bullet Seed and was rewarded for his effort with evolution! A great thing about the Lotad line is that each stage is unique and interesting.

As for Route 4 caught the pidgey enough said and my Tm's are Horrible currently. Current objective is try evolve the azurill, its currently made of paper and will die to a swift breeze if i'm not careful.

Also hoping my rival is also catching nothing but plain pokemon.

Tepig to 17 is probably the safest way to not black out at the first gym. Unless you luck out and get a Fighting type or Hoothoot.

Blaze Black 2 - just beat the first gym. That fucking Munchlax is so scary. Had to overlevel Bobby the Oshwatt on random wilds (and no Audino!).

Lost a Purrlion to a crit in its first ever trainer battle....
