So this means Mallow is not the Trial Captain of Melemele. I've seen yesterday's trailers to try to find to which islands the four revealed Trial Captains belongs.

Kiawe belongs to northeast island because the trailer shows that he's on a place were are smoke coming from the ground.

Sophocles is shown inside of a building and neither Melemele nor southwest islands have a "technological" place.

This means that there is a high chance that Lana is Meleme's Trial Captain, but the place she was on the jap trailer doesn't appear on Melemele.

No. Tapu Koko is the protector of the island. Hala doesnt own him nor uses it, he just shows it to you and explain the lore to you at the beginning of the game. (They avoided showing this part in the demo at e3 saying they didnt wanted to give it away)

This means, there are 4 captains for each island
Hala has 3 pokemon, but we haven't seen his team, so it can be a 20-30ish team.
If Akala is our next destiny, the Kahuna must have a 30-40ish team, like the last gyms, BUUUUT, there are 2 islands left, so either the have shall be long enough to reach a 60-70ish team, or we have to grind.

>Mele Mele/Starter Island - In the upper corner, just next to the platform where the festival is held at, I believe that is Lush Jungle and where Mallow is. This does however clash with the official information released on Lurantis' page where it says it's the Totem pokemon for Lush Jungle on the Akala Island.

But I can't see anywhere else on the map that would have a large enough forest area to be called a jungle on an island all on it's own. I did look at Island #2, but that's where the valcano is and where I speculate Kiawe's challenge to be.

The confusing part is the Totem Gumshoos battle itself is staged in an area with bare rocks, and this is clearly topped with grass. I'm confused. Maybe the Totem pokemon takes an active part of the trial, but you don't fight them until the end.

OP said Lana was at the cluster of rock waterfalls, but if you look closely in the back of the picture where it's zoomed out, you see yellow which indicates land. If you zoom in on that rock waterfalls, that "bridge" isn't a bridge, but a dock/pier. It comes to an end in the water, it doesn't connect to land on the other side.

On the other hand, on the island furthest left, there is a large tree where there's a bridge with what looks like several waterfalls on the opposite side. On the side with the tree, you can see there's is yellow sand/land. That's where Lana is. She was either coming back or leading us to the tree.

That's not even comparable and you know it. In most gyms you battle only 2-5 people using underleveled shitmons before the gym leader, and it all happens in the same place. You don't need to be doing a scavenger's hunt across the entire city and OP pokémon just to be able to challenge the gym and proceed with the story.

And SM still has a rival/friend who'll probably interrupt you during your journey, as well as a possible evil team to do the same. Or do you think the entire plot of the game will revolve around the trials imposed by the captains?

Furthermore, other games just require you to clear 8 gyms, while SM is probably going to make you clear all of that bullshit at least 12 times before you can go to the League or whatever.

And why mention dark caves? Even with the rental pokémon, we'll still probably going to get them.

It's not about game content, it's about how you progress though the story.

Having to complete a trial for 4 types + defeating a totem of 4 types + battling the captain of 4 types + defeating the kahuna would be fine if you weren't required to do all of that to even leave the island (and go to the next three islands to do the entire process again and again). It would be different if some of this content was saved for the postgame, but as part of the main game?

It's the same reason why a game with all regions would be fucking terrible if it followed the usual formula, because halfway through it the badge collecting/trial clearing would feel more like a chore than a special challenge imposed by the game.

And you should not forget that this is primarily a game for kids. Even if you genuinely believe that kids would be patient enough to do all that just to finish the game, I seriously doubt GameFreak would think the same.

As for my personal opinion about all this: I actually hope we get a trial for every type (16 in the main islands + 2 in the artificial island or something, not counting the Kahuna battle in each island), each with their own captain and totem pokémon. The only think that bothers me is the idea of battling both the Totem AND the Captain at separate times. It sounds needlessly repetitive.

I don't know if this is what you're saying but what would be cool is if after you've completed the trials and there are 18 captains for each type and then make the league (if that's what aim of everything) that you get to do this:

- Choose which of the 8 Captains/types become gyms.

- Choose what gyms go where in the region, all gyms will look the same on the outside, but each type has a set theme on the inside, no matter where it's placed.

- Each gym will have a set Pokemon roster/level depending on where in the region they are as well as badge.

- Choose which types become the Elite 4.

This is a bit of a stretch, but these are how the z-crystals are divided up for the toys:

Given how random they are, maybe they're grouped by where you get them in-game? There are the four main islands, the manmade island, and the mysterious island in the distance. We know Akala has water, fire, and grass-heavy areas, so it seems likely those three are found there. You get the electric one on Melemele island, so perhaps you also get the normal and fighting ones there? Since you have to face the Melemele kahuna to leave the first island, there must be some trials before getting to Akala. It's hard to see where the electric captain is located and there's a normal-type Pokemon totem in the trailers, which looks like it's on Melemele.

Dragon/Ice/Fairy also feel like elements you'd find near the end of the game, and they're being released last.

There are definitely going to be more than four captains. Their necklaces don't actually correlate to the islands, since there's no Green island.
We'll probably get a few on each island. There will no doubt be a ground one in the desert area and an ice one on the mountain. There's also a tall obelisk temple thing that screams dragon temple, and the walled city looks too conspicuous to not have some sort of challenge or something.
