XY is the best by far from a technical standpoint, but it's marred by a lack of real plot direction in the beginning, bad music direction (use some old tracks instead of repeating the exact same insert songs over and over, for fuck's sake) and some ill-advised marketing stunts like the haircut.

I obviously know what haircuts represent in a narrative sense, and it can be done well, but that doesn't change the fact it's often done wrong when it comes to female characters, Serena being one of them. Haru in Nisekoi and Misha in KS come to mind, as they pretty much just cut their hair to show they were out of the running, and Misuzu in Air's haircut was followed by literal regression and death.

In the case of really fast characters, animators will slow down the action so the audience sees more than literally nothing, like FTL characters like Jojo's Stands, or just really fucking fast characters like most DBZ guys. I think their plans for Shootie actually got changed over time, most likely after they realized the extreme backlash against the character after his first two appearances. The entire "idolizes Adeku, misinterpreted the fuck out of what he was saying, and misunderstands a lot of core concepts about Pokemon training" thing kinda came out of nowhere halfway through the series, and he also starts jobbing really hard against fucking everyone at that same point despite constantly winning in the early episodes. I really think they had other plans for him, but changed them when they realized early on that they were not going to be well received.

TRio obviously changed back because of backlash. I have mixed feelings about serious TR. I actually liked the rocket packs personally- I think that's a more stylish entry than their hot air balloon, but I guess people preferred tradition.

I think they might've changed some parts of Iris's arc because Axew became such a popular cutemon (I think I heard it was meant to evolve at some point)? But I doubt they made huge changes, doesn't seem like much would be different.

The only characters the writers seemed to have planned out ahead of time were May and Dawn, simply due to the sheer mass of screentime they had to give them and their goals.

Even then there were probably things they changed along the way, like having Dawn release Ambipom and Kenny being neglected once they realized nobody liked him. Also in May its the opposite case where they continued to increase her screentime as AG progressed once they realized she became more popular than Misty and the Contests took off in popularity.

You can tell in early AG the writers weren't sure how May would be received, probably the only reason Misty got so many specials and mentions early on.

That and DP was a weird case where they had a ton of filler episodes have 2 minute scenes which were building on subplots. Like in the cafe episode Ash has a talk with Dawn about her contests.
