Right now Alan is the way Ash was during the Ash Greninja trials. Ash was frustrated at his inability to last through Ash Greninja's battles and wanted to prove himself to Shota, so he thought he had to do everything himself to become stronger and stopped considering Greninja's feelings. After a big loss, he got told that he was not like his old self and this led him to remember that the purpose of his journey was to go on adventures with Pokémon and become stronger together with them, which led to the 'reset' of his and Greninja's relationship and to perfecting the transformation.

Alan is in a similar phase. He forgot why he set out on his journey in the first place (to research mega evolution for Professor Sycamore along with Charmander), is frustrated at his inability to protect those he loves (Sycamore and Manon) and believes he has to become the strongest for their sake all by himself, without considering their feelings and actively hurting them instead. This led to him forgetting the joy of travelling and the enthusiasm he had at the start, and the best way for him to remember them (as we've seen he hasn't entirely forgot from his second battle against Ash when he starts really getting into it) would be getting humbled by the person who made him recall his lost enthusiasm. Such a loss would show him that his way of becoming stronger, ignoring the feelings of others, isn't the optimal one, just like Ash did after losing to Wulfric.
