For me I think the problem is that I get excited catching rare pokemon and they're just not viable for gyms at all. Not only will they generally require a shitload of candy and generally have shitty cp/moves as you said, but it feels like it doesn't even matter when every gym I see is guarded by a vaporeon or, rarely, a snorlax. If everyone is using the same shit, what's in it for people who want to use different pokemon? You can't even pop them on a gym to show off your rare catches, they'll just get steamrolled by yet another vaporeon before you can hold it for more than 2 hours tops. Between that and everyone bandwagoning onto the same team (everyone in my area seems to be valor) there doesn't even feel like there's any legitimate competition. It's all just valorfags stroking each others' e-peens and popping vaporeon after vaporeon on their gyms.

Why even hunt for rare and exciting pokemon when I could just train a team of vaporeons? The balance is awful, and the server issues and footprint glitch just make an already sore spot even worse.

Probably because it's a stupid complaint.
Gyms battles aren't difficult, the idea of having a whole heap of valor players in your area just makes it easier to find gyms to demolish (gives you the most exp).
Pokemon games have always had mountains of un-meta trashmons clogging pokedexes up, the slogan is gotta catch them all not "gotta stick everyone of them into a gym".

This game does need player vs player battles already though.

I live in a not so great area and most pokemon that I haven't caught are mostly in busy roads so most of my best catches are when I'm in a car. When I did venture out I didn't find anything interesting either, just gyms.

Are the servers stable now? Havn't touched GO for a while because everytime I went outside the server started shitting themselves.

Should I stop playing for the time being?, I don't really feel like dealing with the gym stuff to get stardust and coins, since its impossible in my area. The gyms are too far away and either the gyms are of my color or they're someone else's and they are too tough. It just seems like a huge sink of time to put in to leveling and maximizing CP. Leveling seems to be something that you also need to do a certain way to be most effective. All these things pretty much put me off to the game itself.
