A 20th anniversary movie sounds to ambitious to be true. They would have to bring back over 11 old travel companions (probably more if the Sun/Moon saga has a new cast), and the writers would have to hire all the old voice actors who are no longer with the anime, and then you have ones like KAORI who are sick and can't voice May again...and bring them all back at once?

If this was back in the DP-era when the main cast was smaller (only Misty/May/Dawn and Brock besides Tracey/Max), I could have seen a group reunion....but not now after all the following series and into the Sun/Moon saga with another new cast.

An easy way to start to phase Ash out is have him as a recurring character next saga, basically what Alan is now, and have him only appear for certain arcs. He can get specials showing him battling Elite 4 characters and whatever else to wrap up his story with. And then every so often pop up in the main anime to assist the new heroes on whatever is happening.

It would also be similar to how they phased out Misty during AG. They gave her a few specials and follow up cameos in AG, and then had her stop appearing entirely for the rest of the series.
