Check if the gyro isn't broken with one of the sensor check apps. Next check if Go has access/permission to use it, where you check this depends heavily on your phone's manufacturer. Thirdly, it could be a bug related to your phone type. For example my Redmeme sometimes doesn't register touches when exiting power save mode in this game and I have to restart the app, probably a clash with it's ROM modification.

I saw something weird this morning. I got close to an Onyx, dropped to 2 footprints. Then walked in another direction and backed up to 3. I played with it for a bit and came up with a conclusion that worked in my case, as I tested it with a Doduo that was close to the Onyx
3 footprints: 50+ meters
2 footprints: 49-25 meters
1 Footprints: 24-16
No footprints: >15 meters (walk around)

That being said, 3 footprints is very ambiguous, Niantic has to step it up. I'd like to see if anyone has anything to say about this.
