There are, let say for now, 3 types of Pokemon anime viewers: Amourshippers, Pokemon lovers, Ash lovers. Lets say the animators or whoever is in charge of the anime only cares about ratings (which means keep ash at all costs)

If you reset everything, amourshippers and pokemon lovers will leave because this is the second time already they expected a real development on ash and resseting everything justs tells you "we will never be a good anime"
If Serena stays, yeah sure you please everyone, but in my case, i dont wanna see Serena being just an extra and do cute things. I want more from her (and im sure everyone does), and i dont see her being more than that if she stays.

On the other hand, if ash story ends and stays with serena, you please amourshippers (for obvious reasons), you please pokemon lovers because literally nothing related to battles/world would change, and while you not please ash lovers/pikachu as pokemon mascot, you can always make the protagonist be ash and serena child, and make the protagonist constantly call them for easy cameos. Pikachu can stay too obviously.
You keep amour, you keep ash and pikachu as pokemon mascots, and is a fresh, belieavable start.

The thing is at the time Ash's competency in AG stood out because the only thing to compare it to was the OS at the time. Ash evolving most of his pokemon, only getting one starter, being portrayed as a mentor to May, it was all new and fresh at the time.

Obviously now comparing it to DP and XY, AG seems like "middle ground" which it essentially was, but at the time it wasn't. Ash also took down two legendaries in AG (Articuno and Regice) and conquered the Battle Frontier which is his last major accomplishment.

Although they are both nerfed, At least Ash's Pikachu has history of development. While starting a new region with a new Pikachu at Alola is destroying all that development. Because people inflate Serena to be the biggest thing in his life when he canonically doesn't romanticize their friendship like that. He appreciates her support and she's helped him a number of times, credit is due for that.

But if you think in Ash Ketchum's mind, he's thinking "I've got to win this because Serena's supporting me!" you're fooling yourself.

Ash's pokemon are directly involved in his goal and his interactions with them directly revolve around their shared dream of getting stronger/making him a pokemon master.

He also has a pattern of putting most of his focus and passion into pokemon. That's primarily what Ash lives for.

I've spent years meaning to catch up on the anime. I got through every episode until Johto and I had to skip the filler, it was unbearable. I then got to about the first badge of Hoenn and it just sort of fizzled out for me.
This time I'm just going to watch the essentials such as gym badges. Any thing that is REALLY important that I should watch beside those sorts of episodes?

Nice ad hominem. What was shown was Serena reinforcing Ash's own motivation with a generic piece of advice not specific to her character, except perhaps artificially. The point is it has no bearing on her staying or leaving, because even in her own season she wasn't a major factor to the plot when Ash is still by and large self-driven.

All it does is slightly expedite his return to the character that he already is, which developed independently from Serena. Any actual growth from that previous point that follows has nothing to do with Serena at all, involving Ash, his Pokemon and other characters. Again, her role is minor and sparse as fuck, literally three brief moments in this entire massive show.
