Now, if you want to stand a chance at the league, you need a mega and a fully-evolved competent team.

At kanto, even with the excuse of only 150 pokes, you would see lots of bullshit like bellsprout with shenanigans, bulbasaur, grimer, growlithe and so. The champion had an IVYSAUR, and a fully evolved mon was considered an incredible powerhouse.
Charizard was the strongest mon at the league and ash was set to win the league because of it.

Sinnoh league was 7 episodes, Dawn's Grand Festival was 4 episodes, Galactic finale 3 episodes.

Hoenn league was 7 episodes. Both of May's GF's were 3 episodes (but she got two of them), Magma/Aqua only 2 episodes.

Like the finale of every saga is always a handful of eps for Ash and the main girl and the villains.
