There are 6 Pokemon that have been seen in that image, which suggests ~600 Pokemon across the 5 areas, or 120 in each area.

Assuming the 1% is rounded, there would be between 1200 (0.5%) and 400 (1.5%) Pokemon total.

100 in each area sounds like a reasonable guess to me.

First, this implies that you do get to register the 3rd starter that you or your rival don't pick. Either because Lillie takes it or because you "see" it. Other games didn't give you that choice, so something nice to add.

Anyway, some math:

No, I actually liked the amount of Pokemon in XY. I also prefer to catch them all as I progess through the game, not after I beat it.

Assuming the dex would show 1% even if you had 0.1% of the total, 100% could even be all of the existing pokemon ever but that's unlikely. By doing some math and simple assumptions (like 1.5% of the dex being shown as 2% and 1.45% = 1.5%) 3 has to be at most 1.44% of the total, which would mean ~208 pokemon at the very least. That is a pretty high number for just new pokemon and besides, we've already seen a fuckton of old pokemon in images from official sources.

TL;DR
The regional dex has at the very least ~208 pokemon, including new and old because math.

The problem is there's no way to get a good estimate from just 1%
Like many games, regardless of how it rounds percentages from 1 to 99, it almost certainly rounds any percentage under 1% up to 1% (because 0% would make it seem like you've seen nothing) and rounds any percentage over 99% down to 99% other than 100% (because then it might seem like you caught 'em all even though you missed some)

The actual percentage of caught Pokemon could be anything from around 0.2% to 1.49% or even higher if it usually rounds down.

People are assuming that 1% means literally 1%, so if that was 1% of caught Pokemon and only 1 Pokemon is registered as caught, there's only 100 Pokemon in the region, which is way too small to make sense.
But the game probably rounds up any percentage under 1% so it could be out of caught Pokemon or out of seen Pokemon and we have no way of knowing without more data.

Even 70 is quite a lot, try make up 70 new mons

Underrated as fuck post. This is actually one of the coolest SM ideas I've heard so far. With the number of Pokemon approaching 1000 it makes no sense to only have a handful of version exclusives per game anymore. Assuming the dex contains 300 Pokemon and around 120 new Pokemon, the 180 remaining slots could be filled with two completely different sets of Pokemon. Between the two dexes they would be able to cover a lot of the National dex without turning it into a bloatfest like XY was. It would also make buying two versions of the same game quite feasible this time around.

Not like GameFreak will be smart enough to ever do something like this but a man can dream.
