Asexual here, I've actually had girls confess their feelings to me in the past. And these were some pretty cute girls too. I think the same goes for friendship, and in order to be "love" in the way it was described above it needs to form like that first, which is why concept like "the friendzone" or "looking for a girlfriend" make no sense to me.

I'm not sure I understand the Pokémon/human part though, are you saying that such a relationship couldn't happen otherwise between humans? And how is it different from how it s with Pokémon? If we go by the friendship meter thing in the games you just need to spend time with them and don't let them go KO/giving them herbs and stuff like that. Which I guess could be considered to be just a way to make it simpler since it's a gameplay mechanic after all.
