Basically, Ash hit the jackpot as his Greninja turned out to be the Legendary Super Saiyan of the species. The transformation works as a synchronization between Ash and the frog, and the more synchronized they are, the more powerful the form is. Also Ash can see what Greninja sees and can feel his pain.

Beating the preliminary league is not what I'm worried about. Ash was always capable of it. My question is if Ash is ready to fight the E4 or the champion.

The preliminary league is just a tournament for scrubs to qualify for the challenge. Obviously those fights are nothing compared to the E4.
If Ash isn't ready to fight the E4, I wouldn't mind if he lost the league.

IMO It would just be a waste of time to see him win the league but lose to the E4.

Then again, Outside of the league matches, E4 members have already proposed battles with ash because they knew how good he was.

Hikari's contests are kinda eh in comparison with the Tripokalons, but they do tell a pretty decent storyline, just like the Tripokalons did for Serena.
Team Rocket are really fun, though they're never really presented as a threat the way they occasionally are in XY. The comedy is probably better though.

Well it obviously has to do with XY's animation being above all previous series. Which is why I wish we got to see Serena battle. If Serena was an active battler with XY's animation...she would probably easily give us the best battles for a female lead in the series. But sadly since Serena rarely battles and there aren't any in her goal eps, you can't say that.
