The reason this doesn't do it for me is because May and Dawn were obviously tradition. They're just supposed to be extending the success of the Indigo league with Misty so they do that again.

XY, it's easy to see with the budget and animation improvements, they'd want to make a change to something as traditional and played out as that, so they change it up a bit. XY feels like some kind of reboot, and things like that can go a long way in solidifyng that.
