How would you make a format that works kind of like UU for the TCG? I would like to play with pokemon like Walrein and dodrio, and keep things fun without. Suggestions?

This new victory wheel kind of pisses me off if I play too much. At the moment I got like two unclaimed prizes but the wheel keeps stopping in prizes I already got, so I'm getting something like 2 tokens per win.
Considering the prizes have some big token payouts, if I do the math I probably am still getting more right now, but in the long run the old model was better to grind tokens.

I did. The structure deck included with it contains a copy of Professor Oak's New Theory so it's not a complete waste, but it's HGSS era and everything from that era with very few exceptions is complete garbage thanks to number inflation.

Yes, double sleeving them generally means they'll still be in mint condition even after months of play, so long as you don't handle your cards like a jackass.

There's even a video of a guy dunking a foil MtG card in a pitcher of water and jiggling it around while double sleeved, and the card comes out completely dry.

No. They're considered Mega Pokemon, so Training Stadium won't work.
They count as evolved, though, so cards like Espeon or Devolution Spray do work.

The -10 damage from Reverse Valley combined with Shield Energy is situationally good. Stops Overrun, Quaking Punch, Tree Slam (+Resistance), Shadow Stitching, and can make early-game NM and Vespiquen miss the 2HKO. It also means cards like M Mane can't 2HKO you.

If it gets out Delphox it's arguably the best deck in the tier because it then gets super powerful attacks and consistent draws. If it can't it's pure luck with Birch, drawing into Scorched Earth and Poke Ball.

Can someone tell me what the early metagame was like? Early as in when the TCG first started.

What was it like to use cards like >>25868659, that had little HP and did paltry damage for 3 energies. Or would force you to discard all energies for an attack that did only 80 damage.

It was shit. I used a psychic deck and my mother would beat the shit out of me with her colorless deck.

Early metagame was an unbalanced mess.
The major rule difference was that you could attack if you went first. Also, you could retreat multiple times per turn, and if you were confused you had to flip to retreat (and lost the energies on tails without retreating).

Because of the attack rule, Haymaker was a Tier 0 deck:

It's basically what EX decks are today; lots of big basics that can hit really hard on the first turn. Evolution decks had to wait a turn at the very least to evolve, meaning they were sitting on Pokemon with 30-60 HP which would get KOd quickly by cards like Hitmonchan.

This alone invalidated virtually every other Gen 1 card competitively. The meta would only stabilize in Gen 2, when they introduced a rotation system which let Haymaker die. That was the start golden era of the TCG.

Other Gen 1 decks include:
>Rain Dance (Blastoise + Water Big Basics like Articuno), since if you could set up Blastoise you could outpace Haymaker (but you normally couldn't)
>Alakazam + Chansey/Kangaskhan, since Haymaker doesn't do enough damage to KO Alakazam through Damage Swap if you manage to set up
>Moltres mill, which was just 4x Moltres and 56 Fire Energy
>Mewtwo stall, which was just 4x Mewtwo and 56 Psychic Energy where you just spammed Barrier until it your opponent decked out
>Wigglytuff, which was Tier 3 thanks to fighting weakness but could compete and potentially beat anything other than Haymaker

By "rotation", you mean that certain sets are no longer playable after a certain time? Why would they introduce that? Doesn't that just invalidate a bunch of great cards?

I understand the reasoning from a financial standpoint, but from a competitive standpoint it's a pain in the ass, no?

Set rotation is a fairly widely accepted practice by now; notably, mtg uses it as well. The idea is that by rotating out old cards, it keeps the game fresh and simple enough and eases the load of balancing tremendously. Compare Yugioh, a game with a gigantic card pool and an enormous banlist to go with it. Granted there's upsides to that system as well, but it is very complex. Yes, it is a bit of a pain in the ass to have cards pretty much disappear and have to rebuy them, but it's more of a pain to track down old, single-print cards after a surprisingly broken interaction has been born thanks to an oversight by r&d.
