They've at least done more than Tracey. Regardless of what you say, it is absolutely not nitpicky.
He didn't have to compete or learn stuff and become better at something or just do anything at all except go home with Ash. He isn't even a character from the games or didn't stay in the show for at least a whole game generation.
No matter how you look at it, Tracey is just a very different and special case compared to the other main characters and don't even bother using Korrina as an example, who was with them for only a handful of episodes.

Why is Shota beating Ash so "unrealistic"? Ash has lost to newbie trainers many times before. Shota is primed for that position of looking up to Ash and eventually beating him to show how much he's learned from battling him.

Serena is tied to Kalos, after Kalos is finished she may (or may not) get a cameo next gen and then be gone for good. If she were an anime only character then it have more chances of a long distance relationship. But she's not, even with her design.

Ash losing to newbie trainers was only in Unova. Shota's been primed for getting good enough to give Ash the challenge but even in the 3v3 recently it was Ash still having 2/3 before the Sceptile vs. Greninja.

Serena's tied to Kalos about as much as Ash is now because they've essentially made her different to game Serena in all regards. Serena's VA's worked in Pokemon long before XY and anime-only characters don't have a bigger chance. If anything Serena has a bigger chance because she's a main and changed to an anime-only form while anime-only characters have been thrown out as well as unchanged game characters.
