They do, it's just gotten progressively worse with each gen

It's tolerably up until Gen 5. BW protagonists look decent enough, but in BW2 they start going off the rails, and the trend continues with XY. They stop dressing normally and start wearing track suits and other weird outfits, and their hair stops being clean cut and starts looking like spiky Jpop styles intended to appeal to tweens

Even Gen 2 had this problem with the character's hair.

Each gen made the protagonists look further from real and more animu looking with the exceptions of DP, BW1, and Serena.
