I'm predicting this will be the final gen for Ash.

Ash will finally win the league, challenge and beat the Elite 4, get Serena as his waifu, Giovanni will be wrapped up at the end of XY, and Ho-oh will be in Movie 20.

I think the final battle of the entire anime should be Ash Vs. Cynthia. Even if Ash loses it would be ideal.

As usual, the overall story of the show is barebones really. The Malamar subplot seems to have gone nowhere, the Tripokalon stuff was only few and far inbetween, and the Pokémon mostly only had one designated personality trait and never got any real development. DP still reigns king over all these things. Hopefully the show will get some actual plot in XY&Z.

What ultimately drives XY to make it worth watching is the spectacular animation in Pokémon battles. I'd say it's a viable claim to say it's some of the best action animation in anime in recent years. The characters are also likeable, though they could use a little more depth to their personalities, as usual when it comes to Pokémon. The ship baiting is interesting because it's actually a new thing to the Pokémon anime, and not just something fans make up for themselves this time around. Sadly it will probably not lead to anything worthwhile, except some amazing rage from the shippers themselves.

DP had a story that spanned over the entirety of the series, with Team Galaxy, Pokémon Hunter J, the whole Dialga/Palkia legend and the lake trio. It might not always have taken the center stage, but it was always running in the background and was often hinted at. XY seemed to have something similar going with the evil Malamars, but it seems they abandoned that thing for now.

It also had many episodes which focused on Pokémon in interesting ways, like the entirety of Chimchar's story and how Turtwig had to adapt from his fast fighting style to a more reserved and defensive style as he evolved. Of course the Pokémon in XY get episodes focused on them, but they rarely have any real overarching development during the course of the series. Froakie has remained pretty much the same with little development to him, even as he evolved for example. Only at the very end of XY did he get some real development.

There were a few very interesting episodes that focused on Pokémon that had stayed over from older series where they were written out, Dusclops being a particularly memorable one. Goodra had a few good departure episodes, but it was there for such a short time you hardly felt anything when it left, except maybe frustration over that Ash had finally gotten such an obvious powerhouse on his team only for him to instantly release it, the first Pokémon he's released in over a decade.

DP having Paul of course brought with it a sense of conflict and intensity that XY has been missing. XY's rivals aren't horrible, but they're mostly just there, being quite casual with the main cast. Paul forced Ash to develop as a trainer, and it was directly visible to us viewers how he evolved. In XY, Ash is pretty much already a genius, and can figure out strategies to counter problems on his own with little trouble. This is not a bad thing as it might be a factor that actually makes Ash win the League this time around, though it's still extremely unlikely.
