Ash has a thing for Serena, this can't be denied, not saying he has a crush on her or anything but you can't just deny that she does tickle his pickle in a way.

She is the only person to ever get compliments on her appearance from without anything prompting him to do so whatsoever as XY80 clearly shows.

What it looks like to me is he's going through some 'early' crush phase if you will, like he feels something but doesn't really know it and won't realize it until way later on.
