Alright /vp/, given that the pokemon games are themed around what the professors area of study is, what do you think Gen 7 will involve?
gen 1 - Professor Oak of the Kanto region, who studies the relationships between Pokémon and humans.
gen 2 - Professor Elm of the Johto region, who studies Pokémon breeding patterns.
gen 3 - Professor Birch of the Hoenn region, who studies Pokémon habitats.
gen 4 - Professor Rowan of the Sinnoh region, who studies Pokémon evolution.
gen 5 - Professor Juniper of the Unova region, who studies the origins of Pokémon.
gen 6 - Professor Sycamore of the Kalos region, who studies Mega Evolution and change.
gen 7 - Professor _______ of the ____ region, who studies _______.
given how almost all except gen 4 and 5 (maybe 3) delved into what the professor researched, what would be the new dynamic?
Researching the burst hearts? Researching primal reversion?

How can you hate Mega Evolution? How?! It was an innovative and well-thought out mechanic that breathed new life into old Pokémon to make them more relevant. It allowed them to be more viable in battles. It also expanded upon the lore and opened up many new possibilities. Plus there are still many Pokémon that absolutely NEED Mega Evolutions, mostly the Johto starters and Flygon! Getting rid of Mega Evolution is one of the worst possible things that GameFreak could do at this point.

Are they innovative though? They're just more forme changes with a special label slapped on it. I think they just introduced this feature so they can keep marketing old Pokemon. Why else would barely any gen 6 and 5 Pokemon have them?
I think I really under appreciated these games. The main problem was the frequency of wild encounters and the slow battle system, but that really ignores everything cool it did. It had a dedicated lore, kept fresh enough despite relying on older games, had great designs, decent characters (as far as Pokémon goes) and was just all around a well implemented version of the formula.I think I like them more now because everything after their generation has been bad

Literally the only good thing to come from it was the split.
The Lore was too out of place for pokemon and the legends went above and beyond what pokemon should have been. Not to mention that gameplay wise it took several steps backwards in removing aspects of secret bases and contests and for some odd reason it brought back the Vs.Seeker when something like trainer's eyes or an integrated Seeker app on the Poketch would have sufficed.
On the note of the Poketch out was extremely useless outside of three apps, to the point where players had to break the game to make it useful.
I don't think you realise how bad these games we're.

When they came out they were fine. People like to bitch about muh slow engine now but back then nobody gave a shit because it was finally an online game and it has more Pokemon and a new region like everyone typically gets excited for.
I was far less enthusiastic about Platinum (to this day I still haven't done any of Platinum's post game) because most of it is rehashed bullshit from DP.

Mega Altaria is my favorite. I've run a set of dragon dance, return, cotton defense, and roost in double battles, and if your opponent doesn't have an immediate way to take it down they're fucked.

I've played Pokemon for a couple of years now, and just recently begun semi-competitive (and naturally, became introduced to Smogon). I don't really use Smogon, as I like coming up with ideas on my own...but why is it so bad? Is it their tier system? Or their pointers? What is it?

It's casuals from both sides missing the point of what Smogon is supposed to be
Smogon isn't using the best Pokemon to win, it's using Pokemon at their best. The tier system is a way of keeping higher mons out of lower tiers to make it feel more fair. It's totally possible to wreck someone's OU team using a Sunkern, but you gotta know your shit and Pokemon is a mind game similar to that of Chess
The folks at Smogon do their damnedest to balance a trash meta game. Hating Smogon is a meme that shows how ignorant some people are, just as shittalking someone's favorite Pokemon for 'not being good enough' is also missing the point. When you have a Meta with Mega Fug, balancing it is one of the hardest things you can possibly do
