Since everyone is being a Vague Varrick, Flashbang grenades disorient most organic units. When disoriented, a Sectoid cannot maintain mind control (it breaks the mind control), nor can it use other psionic abilities until the disorientation wears off. Can't speak after Spectres (the nanobot clouds), but killing them outright brings your soldier back, so flashbangs might work.

Well, for instance, the dialogue surrounding the Chosen strongholds was...jank. I had done the second one, and the dialogue from Central et al was the Exact same as the first stronghold. Then there were the other missions where psionics were involved, and the Templars said nothing. Loads of chances for little bits of world building, I felt.

Admittedly, yes, the descriptions are vague in some (a lot) of cases, because it's meant not to hand hold you. What some people forget, myself included, is that other people haven't spent hundreds of hours in-game and aren't familiar with some basic meta.

Pods are groups of enemies. "Activating" a pod is just revealing it. Your best bet is to slowly creep along a mission and let the aliens come to you one group at a time.

Do aliens even attack civilians in Haven Assaults while not activated anymore? It seems the opposite of the old haven defenses where aliens would attack civilians while in FOW. My main tactic is to always (ALWAYS) bring at least one specialist with Medical protocol and a medkit equipped. Being able to revive and heal soldiers at range, to say nothing of the absolutely crucial Aid Protocol, has saved pretty much every mission I've done. Specialists are my key soldier, and I prefer to have two on a mission in case one goes down/gets stunned.

Otherwise, more damage is better than more health, since enemies can sometimes just oneshot you anyhow. Go for better weaponry First.

Black Market is your friend, sell off some corpses and keep enough to research/build stuff.

Smoke grenades aren't worthless, though they are rather situational since the enemy can use them for increased defense as well.

Grenades (especially base game and WotC) are absolutely brutal, in that they damage And destroy cover, giving you a clean shot at anything.

Flashbangs are integral against the Codex, because they Cannot clone themselves if they are disoriented.

Is the Archon King armor worth it? The Viper King is great for that dodge but I've never once used the Frostbite ability because the accuracy roll never seems to go over 55% and the Berserker Queen armor has a shittier version of a Spark punch and probably one extra health point over the rest of the suits I already have

You can kill Dark VIPs and still complete the mission, the difference in the mission description between saving and capturing/killing is: "Extract VIP" and "Neutralize Target" respectively.
If you kill the Dark VIP you just lose the Intel reward, which we didn't even need right now so I was okay with sending a lone Reaper to kill him and save me some fatigue on my troops. But instead we got a defective Stun Lancer that could carry the bastard instead of the Reaper so we just captured him.

So, I figure about now many of you have finished the campaign at least once, so it's time for some challenge run suggestions based on the three new factions. All of these will require Commander's Choice so you can pick your classes.

Skirmisher Campaign:
Start at the Skirmisher base
Allowed classes: Skirmishers, Rangers, Specialists, Psi Ops, Sparks
Stipulations: Rangers are your Stun Lancers, and thus must use rifles instead of shotguns (you can use the assassin's shotgun, though- if it's good enough for the chosen, it's good enough for the Skirmishers). No stipulations on the other classes aside from decorative ones. Specialists may be dressed as officers, generals, or troops, sparks should be painted like Mecs, and your Psi troopers should look like Priests. Mind control and hack liberally to turn more Advent to your side. You MUST use the order that has a chance of giving you an advent troop if you can manage to get it.

Reaper Campaign:
Start at the Reaper Base
Allowed Classes: Reapers, Rangers, Marksmen
Stipulations: Rangers have to be decked out with stealth skills before sword skills. Marksmen have to be given rifle skills before pistol skills. Use hoods liberally. Kill VIPs, they're collaborator scum.

Templar Campaign:
Start at the Templar Base

Reaper has less damage but can move And fire in the same turn, can throw claymores, remote detonate environmental explosives, and their detection radius from enemies is almost nothing compared to normal troops.

I tried SPARKs on my WOTC run too. I don't know how bad they were before, but they're pretty nice these days. Just having something that can draw fire without being crit is great. Moddable weapons make them pretty sweet depending on what you want them to do. Extended Mags and Scopes are great for them (Extended Mag especially for Hunting Protocol), Hair Triggers can give you reliable free actions with Overdrive. Having access to heavy weapons early on on stuff that can be upgraded is also cool. The bit being able to hack is a bonus. No fatigue helps fill out the roster. Being big machines also makes them complete invulnerable to a lot of the game's bullshit (Psionics, environmental hazards besides acid, viper grabs, Ruler status effects, Chosen status effects, panic). Armor shredding is always good. Overall pretty useful.

They are solid and the lack of fatigue and immunity to most annoying status effects makes them useful as backups.

Their lack of versatility and inability to train new abilities makes them weaker than human soldiers though, especially the longer the campaign goes on. They also tend to take longer to heal for the same amount of damage than human soldiers due to no healing bonuses.

Templars are 2-trick ponies really, good AoE if you can get others to weaken shit down, and great survivability. Oh and sure, bladestorm if fucking godly with 3 focus. Put one front while waiting for the melee to run in or sit one below reinforcement flares and you're pretty much done then and there. But PsiOp are still better. Rangers can do most of what a Templar can, especially once you get the imba chosen sword, but Templars can't save your party from a fubar miss or adds.

In short, PsiOp is still the same it's always been, mostly useless when everything goes as planned, and fucking godly when it doesn't.

Well yeah, the hunter pistol does a shitload of damage AND has basically full armor piercing. That alone hits the last nail on head, on the coffin that used to be viable squadsight snipers. Pistoleers become ridiculously imba.

The assassin shotgun on the other hand has like every single fucking tier 3 upgrade or somesuch, oh and her sword also penetrates all armor and has autohit.

Basically the weapons break the game reality on the same level that the Alien Hunters DLC did with their original "imma get 50 moves for every 1 turn of yours" BS.

That would explain how my squad's will always seems trashed very quickly when I scout the map with a Reaper. I like the idea of encountering intimidating aliens actually exhausting troops and panicking rookies but with how mentally fragile even colonels feel in WoTC it seems like they could have done better with the implementation. Hunter is a chump in the stronghold, you can kill immediately with whatever.

Assasin depends on your crew. If you have a reaper in your pocket you can just have them tail her all over the room and reveal her silly ass, or alternatively sensor spam. Also bring a grenadier if they didn't get explosion immunity for extra keks.

Warlock is a pain in the dick all of the time. unless you have psy shield early and he rolls absolute garbage for traits like robotic reinforcements or something do not engage until your boys are packing like space marines.

I selected double timer on missions advanced option in my Legend playthrough and tomorrow, I am off to do the final mission.... Its much more fun and reasonable.

I dont think the timers are properly balanced for Legend in any way.

Question is how much can you recover from the game just deciding to randomly kill you soldiers and lose you missions during the first months. Do you need to snowball to win? Has anyone proceeded to play a campaign that started bad and won?

Its well known that a bad start will ruin your legendary run, thats the main complaint about gate crasher. Not to mention that xcom gets easier as you play longer, so i dont think its about snowballing its about not getting neutered honestly.

I think you could possibly be fine losing a soldier after the 2nd or 3rd mission, but i truly dont know because ive never been in that situation. On my current playthrough im barely past the first month and most of my A squad is wounded/gravely wounded and have been out for a bit. Just finished a mission with my B squad and it went fine, only had 1 wounded. We'll see how it goes.

I don't know if they have to see both the attacker and the target for offensive actions on enemies that aren't the ruler or how they react to targeting environmental explosives that don't involve exploding them though.

Devastate, super blazing pinions ability, because of ruler reactions you can only save 1 soldier from it.

And another ability where he grabs a guy by the neck and drags him up to the sky, if you don't shoot him he will slam him down and fuck his shit down.

Other than that he does the generic ruler thing of raping you to death, but with the perks of being an archon with a million defense and dodge, good melee and good ranged damage.
