Reposting from last thread, since it was near the end, and I think it could lead to some interesting discussion.

Many threads back, we had a discussion of the JP manual to Sonic 3 and whether it meant there were originally meant to by more than just seven emeralds. The manual states there were several emerald shrines on the island, each with a chaos emerald, but they all blew up and the emeralds disappeared, knocking out Knuckles until he wakes up to find the Death Egg crashed onto his island. I got to thinking, what if there originally was a set of super emeralds separate from the chaos emeralds, which were all destroyed by the explosion in the shrines? Then, (noncanonically) they're replaced by the chaos emeralds once exposed to the Master Emerald in S&K. Then, you could see the inert super emeralds in Mania as the ones that blew up.

My personal interpretation is that the thing with the shrine happened like... before Sonic 1, and Knuckles didn't wake up till after Sonic 2. The Chaos and Super Emeralds are the same thing. What Mania did is just... dumb. The idea that there were 2 sets of emeralds is just a misconception that even Iizuka had because you "collect" 14 emeralds, even though it's just the same set twice.

There was no need to "clean it up" with Adventure because there was nothing to clean up.

Sonic and Shadow are the same speed, same strength, same power, same EVERYTHING. EXCEPT for one very important detail... Shadow the Hedgehog was artificially created to be what Sonic naturally became.

Sonic was born naturally on Christmas Island, with no knowledge of Shadow. He just lived his life, and through many adventures and involvement with the Chaos Emeralds, he became the Ultimate Lifeform.

Shadow was created by Gerald, who through researching the lost Echidna culture, most likely knew of the legend/mural/prophecy of Sonic the Hedgehog, and designed Shadow to match and 'be' it. Hence why Shadow was specifically engineered to look just like 15 year old Sonic the Hedgehog down to the last detail.

But an artificial copy can never perfectly replicate or surpass the original. Shadow may share Sonic's speed and abilities, but they aren't exactly stable. He needs to wear the Inhibitor Rings in order to use his powers without passing out, or worse, "disappear". He needs to wear his Hover Shoes in order to properly access the full extent of his innate Speed in a controlled but unlimited state. It's only fitting that his signature skill is "Chaos Control", manipulating the power of the emeralds, while Sonic himself always unifies himself with the power perfectly and just goes with the flow.

The Inhibitor Rings hold back his power. Otherwise, if he were to use the full extent of his power without the Inhibitors, there would be no more Shadow.

Based on the implications during the final boss in SA2, about overexerting a super form causing one to disappear, I think the same thing applies to base Shadow as well. His powers being unstable would be the reason why he has the limiters in the first place, and overexertion without the limiters could cause the same "disappearing" side-effect.

I played it today
I've been dying a lot but I've always had to get used to sonic games to enjoy them. I died a few times in flying battery until i remembered that holding down can help you stay on a ceiling.

I don't get much use out of the drop dash. I see it as a move for more pro players. The insta-shield would've been more useful on the bosses as well.

Knuckles and Shadow can battle it out to a close victory to Knuckles, but without the rings he levels Knuckles, albeit knackering Shadow out.

What does this tell us? Stability aside, Shadow can beat out someone Sonic can't.

CONTROL.

What is chaos?

Shadow manipulates Chaos to use Chaos Control, Chaos Spear, Chaos Blast, and so on. Using the Chaos powers, ironically, go against the very nature of Chaos because you are forcing the power to go according to your will. Sonic doesn't do that. He's a free spirit who runs on impulse and goes with the flow, and when he empowers himself with Chaos Energy, he doesn't "control" it. He continues to just go with the flow. Regardless of whether or not he's an embodiment of chaos, Sonic unifies himself with the power in a psychological and literal manner, which is actually a reason WHY I believe he's an embodiment of chaos.

Honestly, Fleetway Super Sonic is probably the best way of describing to you what actual Chaotic personality is.

Shadow is just a bit of a dick who can control powers, but as a being, he's pretty determined, often aloof, cares quite a bit, sometimes unpredictable but you can count on him to do the right thing. His order is being tied to Maria.

Sonic is just a guy who loves Adventure. Whatcha see is whatcha get. But serious, just a dude who loves going fast, is a major hippie, loves the wild, loves not being tied down. However, he's tied to his friends, is always there for them. Friends are Sonic's order.

FF SS on the other hand, isn't tied down to anything. Apart from a dead comic that is. He's unpredictable, will fight good guys, bad guys, guys who climb on rocks, will help people just to show he can, or will fuck up people just to show he can, there's no guessing what he'll do.
That is chaotic, that is an embodiment of, that is your answer there.

I always considered rings to be absorbed into the body. Headcanon stuff, but I see Rings as naturally-occurring renewable energy sources. If you come across a ring, you can absorb it by squeezing it until it snaps. Humans can't hold ring energy in their bodies for very long without getting queasy and eventually passing out. Ring Monitors and capsules are devices designed to gather and store ring energy from the surrounding area, and some people set them up in various out of the way places to accumulate Rings to then sell as a commodity.

Inhibitor Rings are an invention of Sonic X, though they show up as part of his design from the beginning. Sonic Adventure 2 makes no mention of them, though they're apparently all that was left of Shadow after he sacrificed the last of his super energy, and likely taking additional energy as needed directly from his own life force, to help Sonic perform a Chaos Control to displace the entire Space Colony. One could maybe infer the deus ex machina rings were meant to be involved here.

The first explicit onscreen use of them is in Sonic 06 and it was an extremely lame sequence where Shadow just "skates" through a crowd of Mephiles doppels and despite being intended to look "cool", it's an extremely stiff and lifeless scene despite being pre-rendered iirc.
