Hummm hadn't thought of INT/FAI. Could be bretty good.

Is it pure piss until you get high stats if you go the Dex root?
>>
>>187655592
The fuck are you smoking? Shields, and especially greatshields, are at their absolute strongest in DaS2 because you have the best version of Magic Shield combined with a ring that you can stack on top of that. DaS1 is a relatively close second because of how good greatshields are (86 stability on the fucking Tower Shield, which is the most easily obtainable greatshield in the game). It's Roll Souls 3 where equipping a shield gimps you hard.
>>
>>187658290
It's kind of low AR early on no matter what you do but it has great speed so that makes up for it.
>>
>>187658170
Why should it? Not like you're exploiting something outside of the game.

I'm not saying shields are bad ,im saying the rolling animation and invincibility frames actually make sense in DS2,which means you dont really need shields as dodging stuff isnt hard
In DS1 and 3 the roll animation is complete bullshit so shields are the only way of proper defense

>>
>>187660198
Keep at least 2 copies of each weapon.

Sell any multiple copies of armor you have, unless you plan on giving them to NPCs.

Sell any lower-rank rings (like +1 vs +2) you have if you already have the higher rank, since they don't stack.

Selling isn't really about the souls in DS2, it's more about clearing out inventory/box space.
>>
>>187660356

>>
>>187660494
>selling isn't really about souls
Honestly, the amount of souls you can get from selling is surprisingly high, it's good pocket money for titanite, gems, or equipment upgrades
Sometimes I'm like "oh fuck I need souls but I don't feel like killing a thousand alonne niggers again" and I remember I have twenty copies of their armor to sell to good old Gavlan
>>
>>187660450
FUCK that doggo. He had humanity on himself, therefore he was a murderer.
>>
>>187660595
sell all the shit that you acquire through random drops, especially if they're really common (Alonne Knight sets and Blacksteel katanas as an example) as you can just burn as ascetic and farm it again real quick if you want to
>>
>>187660740
Nah, it's purely a cosmetic thing and only applies to armor pieces.

If you like the fashion of a certain armor set, keep 2 copies. Otherwise, sell all extra copies you have.
>>
>>187660547
Those I've found along the way.
I did get to see Pate and Creighton have a stand-off, both are idiots so I let them fight it out.

A friend however told me I should have chosen to assist one for an item, ohwell.

It doesn't seem like there's a lot NPC questlines so far. I've met Lucatiel a couple of times, but no clue where she's off to now.
>>
>>187660740
Theres a character you can dress up with armor of your choice
>>187660893
Lucatiel and Benhart of Jugo questlines only get completed if you summon them for boss fights and they survive
>>
>>187660740
You meet one character and have to give them something to wear.
It can be anything from the heaviest armour to the clothes you started with.
It has no bearing on the game/story on what you give them but just that you give them some sort of clothing.
They will wear whatever you give them for the rest of the playthrough. So give them something you don't mind seeing them wearing.

You might have started Benhart's, the guy sitting on the road to the Shaded Woods with the thick accent. Lucatiel has an encounter coming up, but it's tricky to find.
There aren't many more otherwise, and I think helping one of them gets you the Engraved Gauntlets. Who won?
Also, if you find a sign for a guy called Bradley, summon him. He's the most intelligent summon in the entire series.

The R2s are pike/lance attacks. It's also absurdly long and technically in the pike class rather than a true spear, with S scaling in dex.

Great weapon. Basically a lighter, longer, dex-scaling and more nimble lance at the cost of a lower counter modifier.

I'd say get a couple more levels, make sure your weapon is +10 and you've got a decent amount of hp and armor. You're still pretty far from the end of the game, make sure to power up, the DLCs are quite tough, especially the bosses.
>>
>>187663601
The second you beat the 4 lords you're pretty much set
Also you can't accidentally go into NG+ in DaS2 as it lets you play after finishing the main story and you have to select the NG+ option in Majulas bonfire to do it
>>
>>187663601
>SL109 and literally just 1 Lord to go
Do the DLC when you're near the end or ready to fight the final boss, they're considerably harder than the base game and meant as post-game content.

From start to finish:
>40% = Getting 4 Lord Souls
>20% = End Game
>10% = Optional Areas in base game
>30% = 3 DLCs

If you take it slow, DS2 is a 200 hour long game with DLC included.
>>
>>187659520
Rickert always does this.
>>
>>187663601
IMO you should leave the DLCs until right before the final bosses. Stay away from the Throne and go do the DLC before that, so you'll get the extra boss at the end.

Poison Corvian Greatknife

It's nearly impossible to perfectly roll through sequential running R1s because it comes out very quickly and has a wide arc plus a lot of forward momentum. If they try to roll to the side, the regular R1 comes out fast enough to catch them that way, too, which is the katana running R1's main weakness, and the rolling R1 is also a very good option because it's a thrust attack with a fair amount of active damage frames. Poison is just generally good as an invader because it adds pressure, which can do pretty well to throw people off.

I've seen maybe one in a hundred players who can reliably escape damage from it, and the people who are good enough to do that are rarely rollfags.

Poison only gets marginally less effective, actually, since the infusion scales. Normally you'd use a rotten ghru dagger for this, but at low levels I can afford to lose 10 poison buildup.

It's almost always a good tool for an invader if you can reliably inflict it. Co-op phantoms are mostly idiots who don't carry moss, so it means that they need to move, which is what you want.

Can you parry every player weapon in DS2?
>>
>>187678010
You can parry every attack except 2HR1/R2s of Ultra Greatswords, Greataxes, Great Hammers, every Whip attack, and jumping attacks save for scythes for some reason.
>>
>>187678010
According to wikidot

Parriable Attacks

Physical

Most physical attacks can be parried, except jumping attacks.

All attacks can't be parried
Whips
Standing two-handed light attacks can't be parried
Halberds
Standing two-handed light and heavy attacks can't be parried
Greataxes
Great Hammers
Ultra Greatswords
Curved Greatswords
Jumping attacks can be parried
Reapers
Pickaxe
Quirks

Reapers must be parried at the "sweet spot" (tip of the weapon).
Some weapons have the moveset of a different class:
The broken Santier's Spear behaves like a Halberd, but the two-handed light attack is the same as a Twinblade, and thus can be parried.
The Syan's Halberd's two-handed heavy attack can't be parried.
The Crescent Axe is a Greataxe, but all of its attacks except the jumping attack can be parried.
Both the Drakekeeper's Warpick and the Archdrake Mace are Great Hammers but behave like a Halberd, thus their two-handed heavy attack can be parried.

>>187684896
>>187684359
That makes sense, Heavy Soul Arrow is pretty shit, don't bother with it. Anyway on to advice, High Wall is going to be the worst part of your playthrough, I recommend just skipping through it to maybe free Greirat and kill Vordt. After that is when the build takes off. Skip settlement by just running to where Siegward is and go into Crucifixion Woods.

Get Orbeck, buy Great Heavy Soul Arrow and Soul Greatsword off him. Also get the scrolls from Farron Keep so he doesn't go away and so you can get Flashsword, Great Farron Dart and Pestilent Mercury, three other useful spells. Farron Keep also has the Sage's Coal which lets you elemental infuse a weapon with Crystal earlier than any other caster build can infuse a weapon with their primary stats so you can get a Crystal Longsword/Lothric Knight Sword right away. Finally Farron Keep also has the Crown of Dusk which will give you a nice damage boost until you get the Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring and you can take it off at your leisure if you want.

Against most enemies if you want to cast just use Flashsword or Soul Greatsword, but for bosses Great Heavy Soul Arrow will be your bread and butter as it will melt them, don't even bother with Soul Spear and Crystal Soul Spear since those are way less efficient and come way too late. You definitely want to keep up with Greirat's quest up to Irithyll since his hunt there gets you the Scholar's Candlestick which is another nice 12.5% boost to sorceries, but your main goal for the mid game is getting the Bellowing Dragon Ring for your biggest damage boost.

If you want, you can also do Yoel's quest to get the Dark Hand from Yuria to kill Dancer with. This lets you fight Oceiros, and if you have a Bleed weapon and 100% physical shield you can kill him without much issue and get the Moonlight Greatsword from his soul which can serve you the whole run.
>>
>>187684118
Being SL58 already put you out of range of anything in Irithyll, at that level you'll get activity at post-Pontiff's and Irithyll Dungeon, where most people are at +6 anyways.

>>187684680
I wouldn't exactly call him a reskin, his second phase is sort of like a cross between broken Stray Demon and Quelaag.

>>
>>187685515
Crystal Sage Rapier is great but it's dex scaling is shit despite having a higher dex requirement than most rapier. Heysel Pick is also great but same with its STR scaling, they both work best as 60 INT weapons with or without physical stats.

I've beaten them at least three times before now, and I've never seen them perform that move; just now, they spammed it at me non-stop. Do they only do it after they've tossed their shield at you?

They mostly do it if you try to run away and heal, both as a punish and a gap closer

I don't think any bosses except Raime, Alonne and Champ have a heal-punish mechanic where they deliberately stop what they're doing to attack a player who's healing. I had both the Ruin Sentinels just performing sick anime flips whenever I was trying to space them out for safe attacks, so maybe it is a gap closer attack.

I've just never actually seen them perform that attack, ever, so it came as a surprise that it even existed.

Yes, that's the trade-off. Find a safe opportunity where you aren't being bum-rushed by enemies, cast a heal, and suddenly you're back to full health without expending one of your sippies. And you can do this several more times, and for your allies, before having to take one sip of Ashen Estus.

Properly used, a single cast of Great Heal will heal 1.4k HP, a full heal for any phantom and a massive chunk of health for almost any host, and which you can cast roughly 4 times on a single FP bar before having to take a single sip of Ashen Estus. So you're expending 25% of an Ashen Estus, for two orange Estus' worth of sippies, multiplied by the number of teammates affected by the heal.

Honestly wish games in the series other than 2 had a "fuck it your SL500 have a weapon that scales with everything" gear option in them. Going to NG+ always feels kinda lame knowing that you already hit the peak since scaling is usually locked to half of your max on any given stat.
DS1 had extra casts of crystal soul spear that made magic scale slightly into NG+
DS2 has mundane but that got nerfed and the curved nil greatsword bonus damage is nice but no elemental scaling
DS3 sharp infusion that actually makes it worth going above 40

Like what are they afraid of, matchmaking is SL based in most of these and you can completely break the game anyway, just give me my badass anime sword of death that has S scaling on every stat but only if those stats are above 60

>>
>>187696286
>S scaling on every stat but only if those stats are above 60
That's literally not how the game works though. If it has S scaling, it has S scaling regardless of what stats you have.

DeS had the Meat Cleaver, with very low base damage but S+S+A scaling.

DS1 had the greatsword of artorias, but split damage was so bad in that game that it ended up being weaker than the version that only scales with str/dex.

DS2 has the Ruler's Sword, which can only really be used in NG+ due to the insane soul requirement to get max damage out of it. Also, a power stance and 40+ cost hexes give plenty of versatility and purpose to higher leveling. 40/40/40/40 is useful because any melee weapon can be supported with hexes. Crypt Blacksword is basically that, it requires 40/10/25/25 at least to be used decently, and is optimal on 50/10/30/30

I know and it's a shame, the devs are so resistant to the idea of having something that's just good at everything but only at high levels, but always end up having batshit broken things anyway.
What's the point of having a level cap of 800 and a stat cap of 99 on each stat when you already hit your peak power at 40/50 and level 200, I'm fine with softcaps for NG playthroughs but going from level 200 to 800 shouldn't feel like a 20% increase in power at most especially with the way leveling up costs scale in these games.

Fatroll only starts in 70% but your rolling distance gets gradually shorter the more equipment you have on.

>>187697195
>What's the point of having a level cap of 800 and a stat cap of 99 on each stat when you already hit your peak power at 40/50 and level 200
It's a carryover from DeS, where most stats would scale linearly from 0 to 50, then softcap again at 99. The idea is that your first playthrough you would bring your stat to 50, then second playthrough you would stick with the same character but go to 99.

But then they realized that most players didn't ever reach 99 so they made the softcaps lower and more aggressive, with DS1. Except then they found out that scaling was -too- strong so they changed the way scaling works in DS2 to have multiple softcaps, including higher ones, plus a whole bunch of other ideas that generally worked best but needed tweaking. Then in DS3 they scrapped that system and just went back to DS1 style except with more softcaps.

From has always allowed wild levels of min maxing in their games though, usually with heavy punishments due to diminishing returns or massive tradeoffs. The whole point of AC is that you can spend tons of money building a mech that literally cannot fucking walk because you've min-maxed so hard, and the game will let you do this.

Souls allows that kind of min-maxing too, but your net result (whole character) is crippled if you try it. I think they were trying to apply the same mentality to balance from AC as Souls, but the fundamental problem that souls has a static level up system where you can just pick one thing to make it stronger, whereas AC is purely customization-based. Increasing one thing ALWAYS decreases something else. That means that souls needs some awkward softcap system on top of the leveling up to provide those limits.

Instead of it being a "Aha! I've discovered how the stats work! I have mastered this game!" sort of moment like it is with AC, it feels like a frustrating, arbitrary limit the developers put on the player. Same idea, but the execution in souls is much sloppier.

I think DS2 devs just wanted to ape the Lautrec questline without any real thought put into her questline. Btw, her invader name is "Nameless usurper" which was a placeholder name given to all invader phantoms in development which should hint at how much the b-team cared about fleshing her out.

Her character is also retardedly written because it is completely at odds with the gameplay mechanics.

>"Haha lmao faith is for dumb sheeple xD" is essentially her entire character
>the miracles she sells are actually legit useful
>when you invade her, her miracles are fucking beastly and I think she even cheats because her WoG does PHYSICAL damage
Basically they had to put in the "evil/ foolish cleric" character to emulate DeS / DaS but didn't understand the nuances what made St. Urbain and Petrus work in those games. And that's how a lot of Dark Souls 2 feels like : a shallow emulation of Dark Souls 1 and DeS without much understanding of what they did to achieve that same atmosphere / consistency in the setting.

>he doesn't know about the nameless usurper

of course they didn't put much thought into it, because recreating lautrecs questline in any way was a bad idea, but one that couldn't be avoided because bandai loves money and faservice
>>
>>187699202
>a shallow emulation of Dark Souls 1 and DeS without much understanding of what they did to achieve that same atmosphere / consistency in the setting.

or maybe DS2 is an attempt by actually experienced, intelligence PS2 era game developers at rewriting and improving DeS's and DS1's awful gameplay mechanics and game progression, which DS1 utterly shit the bed with, and dumb things like "atmosphere" were secondary toward creating a large, satisfying game experience so players didn't feel cheated (again) by playing Demon Souls 3, This Time It's Even More Broken edition.

Fans complaining that DS2 didn't understand DS1 is why DS3 sucks so bad. DS2 understood DS1 by trying to fix all of its glaring underlying problems. Blame Bamco, Sony, Miyazaki, and Shibuya to the fucked development cycle resulting in an unpolished, rush game,

But don't blame the DS2 developers for trying to create something better instead of just catering to fanboys.
>>
>>187699272
Yea, at the defense of Dark Souls 2, DS3 also straight up rehashed the Lautrec questline as well although to the credit of DS2, the questline in DS3 had a bit more story credibility due to Rosaria being the mother of rebirth so reincarnation might play heavily into it. The questline barely had any buildup to it though and considering it doesn't even take away your respec ability, it felt kinda pointless though.

They should've just used the rough same concept but do a different thing like Yurt in DeS / Lautrec in DaS and beastman in BB.
>>
>>187699592
>Dumb things like "atmosphere"
I guess if all you want from an action RPG is number crunching then I guess DS2 is your game.

>don't blame the ds2 developers for trying to create something better instead of just catering to the fanboys
>topic was about a quest that is a shitty and unnecessary emulation of a DaS1 quest
???
>>
>>187699703
the reason why yurt and Lautrec work is that mishandling the questline means you fundamentally lose something very important to the game, with no clear way to get it back. This makes players very emotional and frustrates them because video games tend to avoid that.

Why do video games tend to avoid that? Because it's fucking frustrating as shit, so once DS1 got popular and started selling copies, you can be damn sure that Bandai would not let anything that frustrating ever get approved again. Even Lautrec is crippled by the fact that once you know his questline, you'll deliberately let him betray you (or kill him immediately) because of the loot involved, since either way you still get firelink back.

I have a feeling that Licia was a very early concept for the game before the AC developers took over. Her questline and placement almost assumes that you would not have bonfire warping. With warping, there's almost no reason to run across her in majula unless you deliberately get bored and decide to take the long way to heide's tower, or just happen to remember that contraption from before and want to check it out again. On top of that, even once you figure out her purpose, you have to AGAIN go to her useless location (which only makes sense if you're a faith build going back to buy miracles) for the crushed orb to respond.

Plus, the whole "hurr durr faith is silly" idea really only applies to her. She doesn't fit in DS2's world where faith isn't really about religion, it's just a form of lightning magic.
>>
>>187699881
Atmosphere is a bonus. But bad gameplay will break any sense of immersion and accomplishment no matter how good the atmosphere is.

DS1 already set the trend by having a worse atmosphere than DeS but with basically no gameplay improvements, DS2 wasn't going to be the same thing. The only things that save DS3 from being complete trash are the gameplay improvements it carried on from BB and DS2.
>>
>>187700034
>Faith isn't really about religion
It is in Dark Souls 1 where the Way of White strongly believes in preserving the Fire and sending Undead to link the Fire and to seek Kindling. The Sunlight covenant is there to aid the Way of White pilgrims to go and burn themselves to cinders to extend the Age of Fire.
>>
>>187699202

I don't know what you two faggots are talking about. All Souls games are Roll Souls. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use a shield other than the people with Grass Crest permanently glued to their back.

Dodging attacks is always superior to blocking them. Speed/Agility/Evasion are the only important things in any video game. It doesn't matter if you do 1 damage per hit. If they can't hit you back, you'll still always win.

I use shields. That's how I know I suck, and why I've never beaten an invader in my life.

Actually, I've beaten one, but got sniped by an enemy with a bow right as I dealt the final blow and we both died at the same time. It probably counted as his win.
>>
I think you guys are missing the driving plot thread of DS2 about exploitation.
You get exploited by Licia who just wants your souls, you get exploited by Pate and Creighton who want you to kill their rival. The queen uses you to open the path to the throne. The Emerald Herald was sent by the ancient dragon to guide you to it while itself being fake. Benhart is clinging to a fake sword. Navlaan tries to make you kill the others while you can turn the tables and deceive him. The old firekeepers who help you in the start have no faith in you. Even the dlc introduces Aldia who is using you to accomplish his dream of overcoming the curse.

The devs deliberately didn't put any nice guy like Solaire or Siegmeyer or anyone devoted solely to faith in a higher power because everyone in the game is looking out for their own interests first and foremost.

As for the Nameless Usurper complaint, would you prefer to be invaded by "Licia" which would be followed by the player running off to slap her shit at the first opportunity? Her attacks are meant to take advantage of players who aren't paying attention which wouldn't work if it was spelled out.

That's a nice essay. No, really. I'll still stick to "DS2 had bad writing and no real sense of direction" but you might be able convince some others.
>>
>>187701505
greatshields are laughably overpowered in DS1 and parrying is the objectively best way to beat most enemies. Plus, with poise, and estus you don't need to roll as long as you

they're balanced in DS2 considering how bad rolls are, and larger shields cost a lot less stamina than rolling.

DS3 is really the only game where using a shield is a complete crutch, but even they have niche uses for parrying and because they have active block frames that come out faster than rolling a second time.

Is it always "more optimomal" to play without a shield? Sure, technically. But not every player is a perfect SL1 speedrunner. There are tons of games where facetanking is not just a viable strategy, but the best strategy if you know what you're doing. Taking 10 damage to dish out 100 is by far the best way to beat other players in pvp also, because that's the only time you're guaranteed to hit them: when they're attacking also.

Best counter-argument to the "no-shield master race": If it takes more time, practice, and skill to not use a shield, are you really playing more efficiently compared to players that use shields but die fewer times and beat the game easier because they have it? If you have to put in 5 hours of roll timing practice compared to the guy who just used a shield and beat it in one try, are you really better?

How do I get the most out of a Bastard Sword in 2? I've used it in both 1 and 3 and it feels kind of like my signature weapon now.

I went uninfused with 40/40 Str/Dex in 1, and Heavy Bastard in 3.

It's looking like uninfused with 40/40 again for 2 but maybe Raw with bare minimum stats would be just/almost as good?

>>
>>187702460
Summoning 3 phantoms for Friede is a good idea because she can be eternally stunlocked in the third phase. Although 2 phantoms is enough usually.
>>
>>187702382
Of all the games, Bastard Sword is the strongest in 2. It's also very easy to get early game, all you have to do is beat the last giant, then run to it behind a (previously) locked door. Or you can wait until the second blacksmith and buy it from him.

To get the most out of it, 2h it. The 2HR2->2HR2 is a true combo, and for most enemies, 2HR1->2HR2->2HR2 is too. It's one of the few weapons that can do that. Basically in DS2, "thrusting" greatswords like the Claymore are for reach and single hits when 1H'd. "Combo" greatswords like the bastard sword are better doing multiple hits in a row 2H'd.

The 2H rolling attack also auto-tracks behind you, so it's great for rolling past enemies then hitting them from behind. The running attack also has a fair amount of range.

Scaling is in favor of strength, and since dex scaling is so low, it's usually best to just treat it like a strength weapon and only start leveling dex once you hit 40 strength first.

Another weapon, Mastodon greatsword, has the same moveset but is longer and heavier and pure strength scaling.

And I'm saying your retarded
Faith in DS1 is about reading a text and believing that what in it is true hard enough to get a miracle out of it
Faith in DS2 is about reading a text and believing that what in it is true hard enough to get a miracle out of it
Faith in DS3 is about reading a text and believing that what in it is true hard enough to get a miracle out of it

The only real difference between the games is that 1 establishes Way of the White more as an overall religion that people worship, but it's not actually tied to any of the miracles in the game, 2 and 3 don't have way of the white and the things they replaced it with are not as deeply written into the story, but going "faith is just about lighting magic in 2" is fucking dumb.

Your kind of missing the point of a what a crutch is.
Greatshields in 1 are a crutch because you can use them to easily beat 99% of the content.
Agility in 2 is a crutch because you can beat the game with base iframes, it's just really really annoying

A crutch is something that helps someone who is bad at something achieve the the thing they are bad at

Name me an NPC in DS2 that actually treats faith as a religion other than licia and I'll shut up.

Even Targrey doesn't mention the gods once, he's all about Knight's Honor and shit. All those NPCs and not a single religion.

The literal only other example I can think of is the fact that Prowling Magus and Congregation has 2 enemies in it that cast lightning bolts, and is inside a church. They also use dark damage too though, and there's literally no in universe explanation for what that church is or how it relates to anything else.

Meanwhile DS1 and DS3 both have entire GROUPS of NPCs and whole areas dedicated purely to showing how much faith is related to religion.

How do you not see the difference?

This is Targrey's only dialogue even vaguely related to religion or the gods, and both are just colloquial sayings, not exposition or anything related to the rest of the world.

when I said:
>Even Targrey doesn't mention the gods once, he's all about Knight's Honor and shit. All those NPCs and not a single religion.

I was being hyperbolic, but it's pretty damn close to being true. There's no faith religion or Gods in DS2 outside of licia's character's beliefs.

Pleasantly surprised oldman, although I wouldn't put any buff that high up since you can just duel charm it, specially the magic shields, but your call.
add no stamina consumption to fire surge side notes.
GHSA is way too slow for duels (even to punish buffing or chugging outside of 1v1)
Farron Hail is roll bs bait, kinda like Dark Edge but worse.
Affinity and CH are both spacing or stagger to the next attack options.
L.storm is the faith spacing option with the range that you might as well heal aid
Force is just taking a running r1 in order to knock your opponent down (good for invasions but not duels)
even Emit Force is better since you can fool around with projected heal
might be the only one I nitpick, but why did you put SS and L.Stake so far apart?

Duel charms can be rolled and barely anyone uses them to begin with or has them equipped, and with how slow the Lloyd's/Duel Charm throwing animation is they aren't much of a threat.

GHSA is very cheap for its potential damage cost and is the best ranged nuke the spell class has that isn't GSA, it won't hit every time sure but it has less risk and cost than Crystal Soul Spear by far.

Farron Hail is terrific, every good sorcerer uses this for a reason. It's cheap and covers a wide arc that can almost guarantee chip damage anyone since you can manually aim and predict where opponents roll. You shouldn't use it up close of course as much as you should most sorceries, but ideally while Soulmass is up to force chip hits.

Affinity is too slow to cast and in projectile speed in a game as fast as 3 and Crystal Hail hits fuck all even if you can get it off. The spacing options are true but at that point you might as well just use Soulmass. With how fucking awful 'hexes' are on average in 3 the state of Affinity compared to previous games is telling.

Lightning Storm has a very long cast animation which makes it susceptible to knife/crossbow shots or ranged nukes, you stay still for about 6-7 whole seconds even with Sage+2, I feel I'm being too kind having it that high as is especially since it costs 2 whole attunement slots.

Force is fast, cheap, and good to actually create spacing compared to Emit Force. It's not great but it has a niche even in duels for me. Emit Force is noticeably worse since you have a slightly slower cast time and worse chance of hitting it for mediocre damage.

SS as Sunlight Spear? Sunlight Spear has too narrow a hitbox and relies on your opponent being in right in front of you and not rolling. Lightning Stake is faster since the buff, cheaper on FP and can chip damage people who roll poorly away from it due to the large hitbox it has.

I've recently been shitting on people with this thing and a heavy crossbow (I know Arbalest is better, but I like what Heavy looks like compared to Arbalest).

But I kinda feel like I'd have even more success with some kind of heavier or poise type weapon just to nuke heavier players, since ultra weapons are while not that great and easy to punish, god tier when they're lagging, making it almost impossible to both punish or get near. Forcing me to just bait them into attacks and slowly chip away at them with my crossbow.

Thats the first DLC, the key for it is in the hole from majula, but the key for that door is in the black gulch, go look around.
DLC is designed around endgame characters, it's a good idea to do them after getting the Ashen Mist Heart it's a key item thats mandatory for the main story progress that you get towards the end, there is nothing stopping you from doing them early, but again they are balanced around high SL characters, expect to do little damage and get bursted down easily if you try

you just need 1 guy to free aim a charm to erase those 60 points in faith and it's not like you're going to buff again. pretty much agree to disagree.

I'm not discussing its dmg or comparing it with CSS because it's crystal clear. GHSA casting speed leaves you too open for even a firebomb, while GSA can just cast and roll out. you can't even punish the crossbow reload with GHSA.

locks you in position during the actual spell casting is just asking for a firebomb or a bolt. Since you're using at range, the opponent will just roll out of the arc.

with Soulmass you can just run sideways, while affinity forces you to roll due to its tracking even if the projectiles are slow.
well, that's the beauty of the spacing options, dmg doesn't matter. Might be nitpicking at this point, but if the opponent gets his HA before SM activates, you're gonna get a running r1 or 2 2hr1. CH on the other hand, is gonna stagger the opponent while he's still running into to you if he even dares.

it's 3-4 s and has the best recovery frames of any AoE. heck, you can cast lighting arrow afterwards and L.storm is still active

oh and you can't knock down people who are in HA frames because of the shit poise dmg of those 2 spells. niche shouldn't get you mid tier tho

SS can 1 hit kill cocky ToD users because of its 2 hitboxes and it's still faster than Stake. you also can't just roll out and throw a bolt because you're still excepting the SS projectile to come out.
Stake hitbox is about an axe r1 (it's not that large) and sadly you can also get roll bs

>>
>>187708014
With how bad the aoe of the charm is and the slow throw speed again, it's not an issue for me, bvut yeah agree to disagree.

You aren't gonna get hit by a firebomb with GHSA unless they already prep it when you cast at which point why are you even fucking casting a spell. Not being able to punish a crossbow reload is also not a negative because barely anything can punish that even up close it's so fast.

The tracking on Affinity is awful though, unlike 2 it can't even turn around in mid air and even triggering it up close you can reaction roll through it in time if you aren't in an action. What do you mean "if the opponent gets his HA before SM activates" by the way? If you have SM up and look at your opponent it will fire, it has instant firing speed when an enemy is in front of your character and will hit and break their poise unless they're using an ultra running attack. Crystal Hail's poise damage isn't any better than Soulmass' per hit and has a far less likely chance of hitting per projectile too.

That still is more than enough time to eat a Vestiges or any other nuke which is a little much combined with its cost.

Why the fuck would you cast against anyone in HA frames with those though, potential bad plays against opponents isn't really a knock against the spells more than their already limited use, it's just Force is cheap enough with so little risk that it's few benefits leave it more desirable over Emit Force.

If they have 27 Vigor and no Endurance sure, but Sunlight Spear doesn't do that much damage even up close otherwise. The Stake hitbox is definitely wider than that though as it will frequently chip players when manually aimed who try to roll to the side or behind you, it can be aimed almost the whole animation which is the real beauty of it. For direct damage trades sure Sunlight can do more damage but Stake has better versatility overall from my experience which puts it higher.

What do blues do? I was only aware of reds.
>>
>>187712591
Blues are like Reds, except they can only invade people who have "Sinned".
Basically invading people who have Dark Anor Londo with Ring, or Invading "Invaders" who have been indicted with item "Indictment".
>>
>>187712591
There's a thing you can buy from Oswald the parlor, that lets you indict reds who invaded and killed you. Someone who's been indicted can then be invaded by blues, an idea that has been kept in ds2, but no longer exists in 3. They can also be summoned to another player's world in Anor Londo if they turned it into spooky Anor Londo.
In 2, blues also invade sinners, and in 2 and 3, they also protect hosts from invaders.
>>
>>187712305
I have around 200 hours in central irithyl invasions alone and I think I could count the number of good blues on one hand.

On a side note, I've been noticing more blues lately on PC, have all the scrubs give up on invading and chose the easier side?

Just saying GSA could get a better tier. not reliably, but I've punish crossbow reloads and L.arrows recovery frames with that thing

I meant getting the HA frames before the SM hit you, which you also can poise through with some WA. Instant firing speed or travel speed was in 1/2. in 3 you can risk rolling through SM unless the caster spins around and triggers the SM separately. CH gives you a bigger safe zone and spell interval for you to dodge any projectile the opponent throws at you.

you wouldn't use a AoE on someone who isn't at melee range or at least running into you.

I'm just showing the spell's limitation. I'd lower them both.

850 on full havels and 950 on mid armour is about 70-80% peoples hp (60fth). manual aiming a spell means nothing to a BS, you could even roll into the opponent and still get bs. just give Sunlight another try.

>Just saying GSA could get a better tier. not reliably, but I've punish crossbow reloads and L.arrows recovery frames with that thing

I mean it's pretty high as is, I'd say it's only barely worse than my personal best sorceries that aren't just Darts and Soulmass. I see your point there though.

>in 3 you can risk rolling through SM unless the caster spins around and triggers the SM separately.

Yes, that's one of the optimal ways of using Soulmass in fact and with Soulmass' fast cast time that makes it risk free. Compared to Crystal Hail where even landing any of the projectiles can be a hassle even after the buff. You also have to consider having to cast on opponents who will pressure you with something like a katana or curved sword up close in which case Hail is even worse due to its slightly slower cast time and not being able to follow you out of its AoE unlike Soulmass which follows you as long as it's up.

And Storm's cast speed is long enough that anyone in melee range can back off safely even if they have an Ultra, in fact if they have a Stomp UGS they tank right through it and punish you. I get your point on its spacing potential but I just don't see its relative worth enough to move it any higher.

I might consider lowering Force in the future but Emit Force is low enough, it's not Corona tier bad but it's still not even decent.

>manual aiming a spell means nothing to a BS

But it does when your opponent can't roll behind you to backstab? Backstabs even with Stake are very rare, I don't know what players you're fighting who use it but they must not even have Sage+2 on if they're getting backstabbed. I will give Sunlight Spear more tries though in the future though but the basic principle of ranged nukes in DS3 are all the same and without Vestiges speed it's just Crystal Soul Spear with hyperarmor and needing to be in melee range to do full damage with it.

>Look at DSCM.
>Invader still going at it.
>Everyone is a hollow.
>That 1 human guy turns hollow 30 seconds later.
>>
>>187715429
I mean the game doesn't care much about your character orientation for the BS to occur, hence why you can even do it from the side or pivot backstab so quickly
more like I was the victim of the at least 2 bs, he even escaped the lingering dmg like you would on someone casting firestorm.
>>
>>187716535
That's interesting because that scenario hasn't occurred whenever I tried Stake or faced someone using it. I'll play around with more though and see, could be latency affecting things.

Bastard Sword.

Royal Greatsword is a str-scaling flamberge, which makes it universally worse since all bleed damage scales with dex.

Old Knight Greatsword is an purposefully worse version of the Drangleic Sword, with its only advantage being able to obtain it earlier.

Of those, Bastard Sword is the only one that will remain useful for the whole game.

a huge amount of BB was outsourced (including most of the concept and 2D art) via Sony's producers

> DS2 does has highest amount of Lag

It's the lowest, and it handles the lag the best. DS2 however runs really good on low end hardware and goes on sale a lot, so it's extremely popular for pvp among people who live in foreign countries/markets.

DS1's lack is far worse in every way, DS3's lag is about equivalent but with more instability issues and glitches. You don't see as much bad lag with DS3 purely because there are more players close to your location playing.

every item in DS2 can be farmed infinitely through ascetics or drops, it just comes at the cost of making the game's difficulty harder if you want a free infinite amount of them.

DS2 had the mentality of allowing people to become stupidly OP and still twink, but it would be a huge amount of effort to make it happen. DS3 just simply doesn't allow it at all and removed most items/upgrades/gimmicks from the game entirely.

If they really cared about having a fair invasion, they'd wouldn't complain about Soul memory and just invade in the proper areas

Dude, these screens are from 2015.
I learned since. Haven't killed a single Mimic in DaS3, still managed to get a Symbol of Avarice somehow.

People say that DaS1 had the best atmosphere, but I liked DaS2 more, mostly because your character is a foreigner. It feels more melancholic than Dark Souls.

I like how DS2 actually did something to make it different 1 and 3, which easy as shit to tell apart.. While destroying was ultimately a bad mechanic, I'm glad they tried to punish shitters who would just hit chests

People care about SM too much, even IF you spend shitloads of lifegems, lets say you buy 99 lifegems 10 times, thats 1000 lifegems even then at the end of the day its 300k SM.
That is to say barely enough for a single levelup at the SL150-200 meta range

It's one of those memes that got carried away, the only people who were really negatively effected by SM were ones who kept spamming Climax on bridge duels and running a passive aggressive who can have the most souls on them at any time competition in their PvP videos.

The only issue with the breakable wooden chests was the enemies could break them as well it was kind of rare but still having ruin sentinels spin to win one of the hidden chests in their boss room/having a invader burn the oil to break that one chest in the black gluch sucked dick, especially the invader since if he knows what his doing there is nothing short of an instant suicide you can do to stop him

people complain about SM and the lack of full red eye orb in DS2 the same way they complain about phantom-prioritizing and half estus in DS3

They feel like they're unfair, arbitrary limits put on invaders to ruin the fun they had in DS1. Which is EXACTLY what they are because the fun they had in DS1 came at the cost of other people's expense.

wooden chests breaking is perfectly fine, because all wooden chests can be respawned with a bonfire ascetic. You essentially could pay for your mistake by just making the game a little harder. Most of them would upgrade to better versions or give you 2 or 3 of the same item too.
>>
>>187733160
I complain about SM because I hate the idea of being tracked down. I hate K/D ratios in games for the same reason, it forces you to go full tryhard and always play seriously instead of just fucking around.
I never experimented in Dark Souls 2 because I was always scared of losing my souls and not being able to summon/get summoned, while in Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3, I would often screw around with unusual weapons that's how I discovered that the sellsword blades are really fun.

Winged Spear to Silver Knight Spear : Best normal spear
Pike to Demon Spear: Best pike-like spear
Dragonslayer spear: Best spear for fth
Moonlight butterfly Horn: best spear for int

These are the only good spears in the game. Winged spear and Pike are basically just earlier but inferior versions of SKS/DS.

>>
>>187734169
Think of it this way, anyone who summons/gets summoned on a regular basis would probably have 2-3 times your SM seeing as every time a phantom is summoned to an area he is beating it and thus earning souls all over again.
SM isn't a KD ratio, it's your Call of Duty XP bar, it goes up no matter how badly or well you do, but outside of specific matchmaking parameters worrying about it is shooting yourself in the foot as it's there to help you rather than to hurt you.

SL is more restrictive and punishes experimentation far more since you are locked into a single build from the word go no slapping on some int for a casual magic weapon since that's going to come bite your ass later
>>
>>187734794
That's why Soul Vessels exist
>>
>>187734794
Yeah, but SM also affects consumables, not just stuff or level.
>>
>>187734169
SM makes a pretty big difference in matchmaking between 30k and 500k, but that's also when you have the most number of active areas available, so there's always somewhere to find even if you are over/under SM.

Above 500k, it's basically purely based on SL from then on, since the tiers get wide enough that you would have to lose a huge amount of souls to actually be at a disadvantage in the area of the game you are currently in, since there's nothing that expensive to buy except leveling up.
>>
>>187734786
>>187734643
The reason I specifically did not list partizan is that halberds exist and in DS1 do essentially the same thing but better.

>>187734964
all consumables can be farmed without spending souls. SM just limits your ability to spam consumables without paying a tax in matchmaking or a tax in tedious play time.
>>
>>187734643
Yes, but unlike latter two couldn't I use resin buffs on Winged? It seems to me that Winged Spear in general is best . Though Silver Knight does has reach, wide Horizontal moveset and holy modifier for skeletons going for it.

Also Moonlight spear is shit. Used it on my Int Play, Channeler Trident better.

Lucerne
Literally anything Sharp Infused with 26 or whatever Strength.
Massive fucking damage.
>>
>>187734964
So? That only matters if your twinking, in which case just farm the items from drops, or if your actually using like 300 arrows, 20 poison mosses and 5 resins per fight, in which case chill the fuck out with consumables.
A philosophical point you might not understand, but why shouldn't someone who spends the stats needed to cast great magic weapon, be at an advantage over a guy who just uses aromatic ooze and saved his levels for something else.

At the commonly accepted SL and SM tiers for brideduels you can be be matched with a guy who has more than twice your SM TWICE. This isn't even an exaggeration a 2 mil SM host can summon up to up to 8.9 SM red phantoms, that is to say someone that has potentially more than quadruple their souls spent on gear.
>>
>>187735240
By the time you can reach Demons, and Dragonslayer's spear, they will out-damage anything with resin, because resins are extremely weak in DS1. Silver Knight serves the niche of being the best moveset at a slight penalty of damage.
>>
>>187735240
Velkas RAPIER outdamages the shitty horn thing on INT playthroughs, that thing is well and truly garbage
>>
>>187735563

not him but aromatic ooze can't be used on infused weapons, so magic weapon is considerably stronger even at very low int

Winged Spear/Partizan for early game depending on the R2 you want. Spear nets you some cool fashion points if you wanna feel speshul, and it's not particularly bad either. When you get to Anor Londo, Silver K***ht spear is a must, though. Pike is fine before it if you want range. The only reason SKS has more range than Pike is because your character suddenly realizes he can hold it a bit lower on the pole.

I usually complete NG1 at SL70/80 mark, anyways even if they are weak they would probably still add in bit of damage and lets not forgent GMW adding almost magic damage at 15 Int.

Velkas has 5% STR, 53% DEX and 97% INT scaling, while having 93 physical and 156 magical damage, it can counterhit, has the 2 hit running attack and is a rapier so good backstabs
Moonlight butterfingers horn on the other hand only 180 magical damage with 3% better INT scaling, can't be used to counterhit and has slower and generally worse overall moveset.

I was REALLY disappointed when trying out the horn on my INT character, shits just so fucking bad, the only redeeming factor being the fact that you get it early, which doesn't even fucking matter since it takes demon titanite to upgrade

It's totally different going through pve with that intent vs making a pvp build, because poison is something you have to really build up to, poison stones are rare and manslayer / mytha's blade doesn't show up until later. It's still very good though, just not broken. Poison arrows and poison knives help a lot too.

Switch it up with normal hexes and pyromancy along the way and that will give you enough variety to not get bored.

>can max a regular weapon in das 2 after defeating 2 of the 4 routes
you can max a regular weapon by just having harvest valley unlocked. 3 from a bonfire ascetic at FFoG, 1 from a crystal lizard, 2 from a drop. Slab is in FFoG too.

>cant max a TT or boss weapon until dragon aerie
the pursuer drops for twinkling and the various crystal lizards mean you can max a TT weapon probably sometime before drangleic castle.

also don't forget that you can farm any/all of these through smooth and silky stones

>>187739256
I know that two handing a weapon double your strength for the requirement, but damn, I hate how every game has its own mechanisms, it makes switching from one to another a pain in the ass.

Yeah, but it's a damage modifier on swings, not an str modifier for AR

>Why 2 doesn't ever actually tell you how much damage a weapon gains from being 2 handed though is a mystery for the ages, because weapons DO gain damage from being 2 handed

Because multipliers for weapons are standard across classes and movesets. For most it's:
>1HR1: 1.0
>1HR2: 1.2
>2HR1: 1.15
>2HR2: 1.4
>Jump: 1.52

there are variants for weapons with special movesets and powerstancing but 90% of weapons follow that formula, because DS2 is actually a cleverly designed game with a solid framework for balance that makes it easy to understand and work with the stats if you just do a little experimentation for yourself.

DS3 has the 2H bonus AND multipliers which makes it much more vague and confusing about which weapons are actually strongest.
>>
>>187739407
Phrased that poorly but yeah it's odd
1 and 3 give you a flat 1.5 multiplier to your STR, meaning it takes less to use a weapon, but it also counts that modified STR for scaling, so a weapon with STR scaling does more damage when 2 handed because the game engine calculates you as having 1.5 times your actual STR for determining the AR
2 on the other hand just halves the equipping requirements for STR of 2 handing, removed the bonus to STR scaling, BUT added a special modifier that seems to work on a weapon to weapon and attack to attack basis and adds extra damage to your swings.

Let's not get into flat out reversing how infusions and damage scaling work over every title

I also like how Dark Souls 3 make it clear how many damage percentage you block. With Dark Souls 2, it's some random arbitrary number, and it's just your armor, not consumable.

Dark Souls 2 does have some nice singleplayer covenants and a lot of different weapons, so I can't decide which one I prefer.

>it's some random arbitrary number
Elemental works fine, its just a percentage, 1000 being 100% 0 being 0%, you can make yourself immune to curse/fire damage entirely.
DS3's absorption percentage was a really nice quality of life change though, damn shame they added it in the game where armor minmaxing matters the least since only have the 75% roll breakpoint to worry about, unlike the 25/50 of DS1 or the linear stamina regen and roll distance modifier of 2

So if you end NG at 4 mil SM and start NG+ at 4 mil SM you would need 6 mil SM to unlock it in NG+

I actually prefer the DaS2 system for two-handing.

In DaS1 and DaS3, there was never any reason to go above 27 Str if you just wanted to two-hand weapons (short of weapons that require 50 Str, then you go 34). And with ultras, there never was any reason not to two-hand the weapon (doubly so in DaS3 where that's where you get hyperarmor and unparriable status). So if you wanted to minmax and put the points elsewhere, 27 was the most efficient way and there were no real downsides. Even for Str builds in DaS3, there's never any reason to go above 66 for Heavy infusions because two-handing will put you up to 99 effective Str, as opposed to actually needing to invest up to 80 Dex for Sharp infusions.

But in DaS2, you have to accept that you'll do shit damage if you want to two-hand a weapon, without investing in Str for more damage. If you just want to two-hand an elementally infused weapon and rely on Magic/Fire/Lightning/Dark to do the work, you could just go 20 Str and leave it at that. Or you could invest up to 40 or 50 Str and get the most physical damage out of the weapon, even while two-handing, and also gain the ability to power-stance certain weapons. And if you wanted to go full retard you could get up to 99 Str and power-stance the hot wings.

It's fun. You can switch classes anytime.
Has fun melee combat and amazing magic. Though small static world. So not much to do after you've completed it once or twice other than just play around different classes. Still worth doing them and DLC zone is hard.
Already has a PC Release and PS4/XB1 getting remaster but they're both locked to 30fps. WebM

Since we are talking about balancing I feel obligated to point out that Dragons Dogma's armor/damage balancing is fucking stupid.
It's literally a flat reduction, someone with 1000 armor being hit by a weapon that does 1001 damage will take 1 damage, same guy being hit by a 1200 damage weapon will take 200 damage, this can sometimes result in the combat being a complete and utter spongefest OR you just instakilling even the largest of monsters with a single quick burst.
You heal by pausing the game and chomping down on healing items in your inventory, which you can buy an infinite amount of at a town for next to no cost.

It's a fun game, but you kind of need to limit yourself to not feeling the need to constantly minmax or else you will break the game, also knowing when to back off from a high level area lest you want to grind away at a bosses HP bar for hours
>>
>>187740723
>>187739256
DS2's system also makes more sense given it's damage formula, since AR is an indicator of your overall offensive ability before any multipliers, whereas in DS1/DS3 it's a vague indicator of damage with only some multipliers included.

that's because DS2 uses a simple AR - Defense = Base damage formula, whereas DS1/DS3 uses some weird exponential reduction formula with multiple breakpoints, making it much harder to estimate at a glance. It separates what you're using from how you are using it.

You know that enemy defenses range from 30 to 130 in DS2, so you know at a glance exactly how much any ring or scaling or infusion actually adds to your damage.

Physical is always -30 to -130 and elemental is always 70% to 30% damage. It doesn't matter what hand you use your weapon in, those baselines remain the same.

Atleast until you start BBI, if you didn't min-max or are beyond level 80 with Dragon Gear, Good luck.
Also It's kinda shitty that alot of quests are to be done in "Stages" and few of them require you to venture out into really threatening zones. Reaching Witchwoods for that dumb thot early is hard as fuck with those one shotting bandits and all.
