Denuvo causes performance issues because of the way it functions. Early versions could even damage hardware and even now it's using up your read/writes faster than it needs to because it's just shuffling shit all over the place.

Somehow I managed to not notice the DRM until 10 minutes ago. I learned about it because I was looking up a separate issue with it not working with my 360 controller despite working fine with it earlier today I have another controller with a better d-pad but it wasn't supported at all.

Sonic 2, 3&K are great to start with
The first Sonic game is all right but not as good as the other classics
Sonic CD is... different. Some people love it, some hate it. You'll want to play it at least once though.
And of course there's Mania which is basically a successor to the classics.
Adventure 1 is good, especially if you can actually play it on a Dreamcast or play it on PC with mods. Adventure 2 is good too. You will want to play both of these at some point because 90% of the in-jokes in the fanbase are from these games
Heroes is all right but some people like it. It's worth checking out if you can buy it cheap or have a decent computer that can emulate it.
You'll want to play Colors and Generations at some point too. They're both good.

Avoid Sonic Chronicles for the Nintendo DS. Sonic Shuffle for the Dreamcast is just a Mario Party style game so ignore that if you want. Avoid Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for the Wii U.

If you're bad at motion controls then you might have trouble with Secret Rings, and Black Knight for the Wii but give them a chance as they have good character moments. All the other games are mediocre to excellent. You might enjoy some more than others, give them all a try, especially the Genesis games. Have fun!

I tried test running Generations and it gave me an error regarding configuration not matching my hardware or something along those lines. How do I fix that? deleting the config files in the game's install folder didn't help.

You might have to go into your video card options and set the .exes to run with them by default, but I'm not sure if that does it. It's been a while since a fixed that problem, I'm afriad.

The Doom modding community has made source ports that run Doom in ways it normally wouldn't be able to run. At least, that's my limited understanding of what I've seen into Doom modding and such.

I just started playing Mania on PC, got up to the first act of Studiopolis Zone before I had to quit to go do other things. So far I got 3 Chaos Emeralds and several medals, 2 of which are gold. That Mean Bean Machine boss tho, it's too good.

I haven't noticed any slowdowns or input lag even on my 7 year old laptop with an intel HD graphics card which is great. Recording my first playthrough of it so it'll be on youtube eventually.
