>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, OneShot, Rimworld, Age of Decadence, VA-11 HALL-A, Subnautica, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Darkwood, Braid, Monolith, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, West Of Loathing, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago and /jrpg/ is welcome.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

Bounce through an easy machine early in the path. If you can't delete the logs on the target for whatever reason, delete the logs of the bounce.
I never finished the game either. It seems to base heavily on knowing your limits at all times, which I was never good at.
>>
>>187483735
Yeah, nah. I tried that with the Golbal Criminal database. Even if you delete the log of playing with the machine, thy can still trace back to you.
You need to go through InterNIC and always delete the logs with a tip top log deleter or they will find you, there's no way around it. Trust me, I tried.

I find it really fun once you get the bypassers, you can set up passwords all around the world and use them to get more time on a trace.

Nights in the first hideout are pretty chill. As long as you barricade all doors except for one (put a wardrobe in front of it instead) and don't stand in front of a window/cracks in the wall nothing should come inside.

I reccomend you pick the room with the front door and open it if you hear the knocking, it's worth it early on, especially to get the wedding invitation. Not so much later.
>>
>>187484359
I'm sitting on 17 pistol mags, I just sell knives to wolfman now. To buy more pistol mags.

do you play alien isolation by playing it once and being too tense to play it again despite having fun

>>187484446
i'm only 2 nights in so far but it sounds like i gotta do some reorganizing. i've been chilling in the room with the oven with one lamp while standing in the corner but i think the corner had a crack. i didn't think it'd be dangerous.

on my second night, someone knocked and i went to open it but a savage just slapped me in the face then left. i didn't know they could knock too.
>>
>>187484910
>do you play alien isolation by playing it once and being too tense to play it again despite having fun
Last time I played it was two months ago. Everytime I start it, my hands start shaking even when I just stay on the main screen.
>>
>>187484910
> i've been chilling in the room with the oven with one lamp while standing in the corner but i think the corner had a crack. i didn't think it'd be dangerous.
The enemies can see through cracks and barricaded windows just like you can- they are not guaranteed to spot you because the openings are small, but it is possible.

>on my second night, someone knocked and i went to open it but a savage just slapped me in the face then left. i didn't know they could knock too.
Yeah that happens sometimes, but usually it's someone leaving supplies at the door. You should open them in the first hideout to get the invitation.
>>
>throw rock at savage
>he throws it back

Savages are friend
>>
>>187484981
i've never played it but i'd probably react the same. i always thought the only reason horror games make me tense is because i'm afraid of a jumpscare but here comes a game made specifically for NOT having jumpscares and it turns out i'm just pussy.

>>187485126
thanks for the help. knowing how to play the game better might ease my anxiety.
>>
>>187485828
Alien Isolation is honestly the worst (best) horror game I played.
F.E.A.R. was spooky but really fun, Doom 3 was a failure, Amnesia was just boring, but Alien is just horrible.

That sound the xenomorph makes when crawling out of a vent almost caused me PTSD.
>>
>usually one do one day of Darkwood at a time

>>
>>187485923
i played F.E.A.R. a long time ago but never finished it, i think because there was a part where i had to swim and i'm terrified of water. it was fun tho, i should get it and play it again.

i'll be sure to never play Alien Isolation

FEAR is a very good game, and unless I remember it wrong, there aren't a lot of swimming sequences. Unless you mean it, you can't really drown.
Unlike Far Cry 3 where drowning slowly turns your screen black and then a shark arrives. Fuck that game.

>>187486902
There's a few here and here.
>>
Oh yeah. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x5wzmJKgyw.
Jump to 2:00 to have an accurate idea of how I react to that game.

Of course, I do it silently because I play alone, but I'm sure that if I was forced to talk while playing, I would also scream a bit.
Darkwood can be all spooky, it'll never beat Isolation.
>>
>>187483715
I got absolutely gangraped by some shaman thing first night in 2nd hideout, what do I do
>>
>>187486960
even if there's no threats whatsoever, just being in the water just makes me so uneasy. yet somehow i managed to get that shark relic that's just at the bottom of a deep ass hole in the water. no idea how i managed to do it but i was nervous the whole time. luckily no shark attacks.

>>187487214
i've never subjected myself to such torture so i'm not quite sure how i'd react but i can definitely see myself freaking out.
>>
>>187487724
I can understand that. When I was a kid, I was always uneasy in water. Mostly because of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yw5jkAHgME and that fucking Tomb Raider 2 level
I got better recently, but Far Cry and its sharks terrified me. Same with the crocodiles. I always found them kinda cute, but they're ambushing little bitch, they come, grab you, and spin around, trying to drown you.

Don't try Isolation, though. Seriously, it's probably the best licensed game, it shits on Prometheus and Covenant, and is genuinely spooky.

From my understanding, you're supposed to bypass all the security system, then use the various LAN Scan thingy to move from one post to another.
My understanding of it is really basic, but I did managed to pirate Andromeda's LAN system in the story, so I think I got it right anyway.

>>187487980
Fuck off.
>>
>>187487862
i don't know why i'm so afraid of water but earliest i can remember is the fucking eel from SM64 and aquatic mine from SA2. aquatic mine isn't so bad now but fuck that eel.
also i loved finding the crocodiles while they were still hiding and just throwing rocks at em.

if i'm ever on a masochistic streak, i'll try Isolation one day.

>>187487980
i have the game in my library but fuuuuuuuuuuuuck that
>>
>>187488270
No, I can understand being afraid of water, since my own terror is even more illogical.

I do suggest having someone near when trying Isolation, if you're alone, you'll panic. I took the habit of Alt+F4 the game whever I hear the xenomorph's footsteps coming toward me.

Missing out on a single oddity is not a big deal. You miss way more if you don't take pickpocketing for example, or have low perception. But sometimes they are just there to reward players for exploring things more thoroughly.
>>
>>187490652
I have 30 pickpocket and 14 dex, it was enough so far, but these coretech guys have way too high perception, I can't steal even with +2 dex from junkyard surprise.

Well I personally wouldn't level it for just oddities. Unless you plan to make stealing shit in general part of your strategy I wouldn't bother.

The three oligarch factions don't really leave corpses behind. I think only Coretech members can die without your interference, and only if you do their questline.

Looks like FTL with shipbuilding/crafting. Mite be cool.

But damn, ever since Minecraft happened we've been getting tons and tons of these block-based building games.
>>
>>187508643
Yes, FTL influences aswell. I just got major rimworld vibes from the pawn models, the way they move and also they eat the exact same way as in rimworld, by puking green liquid.

In rimworld, the main focus is on pawn management which at this point is fairly deep. I don't think characters in this game have as fleshed out personalities and reactions to events, looks like they just have stats and thats it but I dunno. The ship battles look fun though and very ftl-like. I imagine if rimworld had exploration off-planet it would look like this.

Isometric tactical turn-based cyberpunk RPG that's NOT by Harebrained Schemes. With properly destructible environment like in original XCOM/Xenonanuts and stealth play resembling Commandos.

You can't explore at night, at least not outside your hideout. As soon as you leave the protective gas you will be chased by an unkillable enemy.

How do I reliably deal with red chompers? I'm just starting to get into the old woods but they fucking me up the ass. It takes like 3 pistol shots to kill one, and they attack too fast to get good hits in with the shovel.
>>
>>187538337
>How do I reliably deal with red chompers?
5 pistol shots

1 shotgun shot at point blank range

1 hunting rifle shot brings him down to like 10% HP, if you engane from distance you should be able to reload and shoot again quickly enough, or simply take out a pistol and shoot once.

>they attack too fast to get good hits in with the shovel
Shovel has really good range. Prepare the attack , let him charge, swing just before he bites you, make some distance, repeat.

But really, just try to avoid them and shoot if that's not an option.

I haven't gotten far, but you interact with an oven that will eventually pop up in your house to save. Not sure about reloading though.

Also, is this game like Don't Starve where you have a certain amount of time before night falls, or does the night only start once you reach a certain point? Also, how do I know it's night? Even daytime looks dark as fuck.
>>
>>187583969
You have a certain amount of time before nightfall comes. Pay attention to the light from your cone of vision. It starts from a warm, bright day, slowly turning a darker orange, and then night. Eventually you'll be able to either find or buy a watch, which will give you the time in the top right corner of the screen if you have it somewhere in your inventory. There are also some areas where time is frozen, usually story related places. It's easiest to tell what these places are once you have a watch, but they're all areas separate from the main maps.

There's no real reloading, unless you count quickly pausing the game and going to the main menu so you can reload into your last save.

Too expensive and the dev is more autistic than I am. That's usually not a good sign. I recommend checking out the Stardew Valley Nexus at Nexus Mods, they mostly have got it covered. Just switch the filter to "Most Downloaded" and then mix that with what you want from the first 5-10 pages on "Most Recent". Modding is serious business. Take your time, and don't be afraid of maybe losing your saves if you're in the middle of a playthrough. If you want lewd mods they've got you covered there too, though if you're one of those weirdos who wants the Jas/Vincent marriage mods you'll need to look elsewhere. No sex mods as of yet save one for one of the bachelors, but LoversLab is working on that.

gay people tend to like dudes, and a lot of gay people like stardew valley and mod it. most of the lewd mods are for gay people or pedophiles as a result. this is why you don't market your game to tumblr or reddit.

Oh. Wait a second, what does that say about me if I love the game and play a female character?
>>
>>187591289
nothing wrong with playing a female character when you're a guy. if you're comfortable enough in your masculinity to romance a male while playing a female then that's alright. plus that mod which lets you bang the jock bachelor is open for both male and female characters. i never said that one was a gay mod. more of an alteration to one of the heart events. there are still more gay mods than straight mods for stardew valley though. usually a sign that the community is tumblr/reddit and thus a sign that they should not be interacted with in the slightest, with some exceptions. horses' music-dogs and his girlfriend super spooks both love stardew valley and use reddit, and they're great people.horses being the guy who made classic game and "mr. krasnoludek, teach me your magic spells" and some music for "the cat lady", of course.

>>
>>187591560
I mean, It's not like I'm going to not like the game if the community is a bunch of faggots and a few okay people. It's not like it's multiplayer or anything yet. I wouldn't necessarily call myself being comfortable in my masculinity by playing female characters in just about every game, but I'll digress before the thread gets derailed.
>>
>>187592042
I play males when there are females in a game that I want to romance and/or procreate with, depending on the game's options. If adult modding is an option and there is the option for pregnancy with those mods then I will play a female, unless futanari are an option in which case I will play a futanari. I don't mean newhalf by the way - trannies - I mean futanari - hermaphrodites. Really wish the gays would stop coopting everything and trying to make it about them, I can't even find good futanari porn anymore because the gays think that trannies are futanari and not people with mental health issues that are sometimes cured via surgery and sometimes via therapy and medication. And alright.

Anyone else irritated that such a thing like the "MAKE A GAME BUT LET NO ONE PLAY IT JAM" exists? I wanted to play Schrodinger's Tamagotchi but then I saw that it was part of that jam and now I want to punch some avant garde retard in the mouth.

I'm in Chapter 2 right now, spend about 10+ nights in the Meadows in total.

I was spending the night in the room with front door (the one that you need to open when you hear the koncking) blocked by a wardrobe and the other one barricaded.

Not a single enemy managed to get inside the room in all those nights, literally. Maybe you put the wardrobe on the wrong side, it should be placed on the outside, otherwise the enemies will just push it when walking forwards.

As I was writing my response I thought “hey, maybe those ding dong fans of mine would be interested in this stuff?” So for those aspiring young and old future storytellers/gamemakers out there, or just anyone interested in how I go about writing, here is my 4 key tools for writing!

Also, if you’re reading this, you probably know by now that my grasp of the english language is equally to that of a 5th grader. So, if you’re brave enough and don’t mind all the chicken scratch, keep going!

As far as the writing goes I really believe simplicity is the key. I followed some very basic rules of story telling, and that’s how the idea for Lisa formulated. Boringly enough, it didn’t really come from a personal experience in my life, or some life long idea. It was a product of sticking to some time tested rules. And they are:

- Love: no matter what, all good stories have to have love in some way. Whether it’s good or bad intentions, character motivations must be based in love.

- Primal: Piggy backing off of the first rule, a good way to check your story is to ask “would a caveman understand this?” Meaning, does the core storyline have things that appeal to our most primal instincts? Birth, death, the unknown, fear, survival, sex, love, etc. This doesn’t mean you can’t have complex ideas in your story. It just means that at it’s core, it must have something primal that keeps us caring about the story throughout.
>>
>>187607819

-Irony: This one is often over looked, but still important and sometimes can be cheesy. Disney esc movies are really good at this. Like: A snail that wants to be a race car driver! How ironic! In Lisa’s case it was a farther doing his best to show his daughter love, the irony is that everything he did only pushed her away farther.

- Make the problem worse: Just like the title says, you have your conflict and then you just keep making it worse and worse until your conclusion. I feel this one is lacking in most modern story telling. It feels like most are playing it “safe”. Another way to phrase this is “raising the stakes”. Basically meaning, you just really want to push your characters as much as you can before they achieve there goals. It makes that finale so much sweeter, or heart wrenching depending in the direction you want to go in. So if you got a guy who wants a banana from the kitchen, but in the process he dispatched a 100 ninjas, sacrifices his children, has to divorce his wife, loses his life long dog companion, all to get this banana. You created a much more emotionally connect to this man and his banana, rather than if he was able to just get off the couch And walk to the kitchen the eat.

So really those 4 things are the main driving forces behind Lisa. The rest I suppose is just my interpretation of these rules. But, the core principles are what gave everything in LISA it’s direction.

Yours truly,
King Ding

I crashed into a bunch of things but there wasn't any problem since the cyclops has loads of hit points. Then I started losing them left and right and the sirens were blaring about a monster attack, which continued as I tried to escape upwards until I reached the surface, tried to bail and maybe stick the thing with my knife or something (what the hell else can I do) and it blew up before I made it out.

I am wondering if a game with a specific premise exists.

You start off as just a normal human fighting mundane enemies like wild animals and later other humans. As you reach certain points in the game, the scale of what you are capable of doing and what you are capable of going into battle against gradually increases and you very clearly are established to have become something far greater than a mere human (and I don't mean stuff like certain JRPG protagonists and how they start inexplicably killing gods later in the game while not really being acknowledged in-universe as people that have transcended mortal limitations).

Basically, is there a game where you gradually go full Gurren Lagann over the course of the game? It doesn't matter to me if your examples are technically indie games or not.
>>
>>187624837
There aren't many games in general where the scope of the game changes radically like that. Spore is the only one I can think of off the bat, but it's not what you're looking for.

>>
https://www.humblebundle.com/jumbo-bundle-9

Warhammer and Samorost in beat the average are great. Flame in the flood is randomized survival down a river iirc.
>>
>>187627316
Farsightedness is solid. The increase in field of view is not very big, but it's helpful nonetheless and might save your life.

Moth is excellent during night invasions since you will be standing next to a lamp, pretty much instant free healing.

Navigator is handy if you find some loot you can't carry or a locked chest, but can be replaced with your memory or writing things down.

Mushroom healing seems useless to me, not only are healing items common enough, you should be using mushrooms to level up.

Personally I take Moth first, then Farsightedness.
>>
>>187626267
I like Pony Island in spite of how shitty it starts out.
Extremely satisfying to spam the lazer during the end.

Shotguns work wonders on them. However, you ought to try something like the pitchfork (can be obtained from the pig shed ranchers as well as in the village mayor's cellar (if you know what I'm talking about).
>>
>>187594378
A lot of the perks are pretty questionable as to how useful they are. I recommend increasing your eyesight if you feel indifferent about the options. If you're getting hurt a lot at night, get moth first.

How do you put the wardrobe on the outside of a door and then get inside?

Do I just need to rebuild my barricades every night so I can stick the wardrobe on the outside and run around?
>>
>>187633568
Open the door from outside.
Drag the wardrobe up close so your character is inside the house when it's done.

I don't believe you.

But geothermal vents are great way to heat up arctic bases for free. Or burn it in warmer biomes.
>>
>>187635023
I had the luck of spawning on a map with one near the center, and I wasted it all.
And since I don't know how to research, it'll take me a while before I can advance far enough to build geothermal stuff.

What if I build a room around the geyser, with two vents : one leaking inside for warmth, and the other leaking outside? Would that work, or is it still hazardous to use wood?
>>
>>187633568
I stopped bothering with wardrobes a long time ago. They are gone in like 2-3 hits and sometimes enemies might simply push them out of the way if it's not set up perfectly, it's not worth the effort and re-building them.
>>
>>187635237
The specifics depend on your average outdoor temperature, but don't use wood.

The uncovered vent generates a lot more excess heat than a reactor which converts heat to electricity. Even reactors are best left in open air. You can build some defensive walls + roof, just don't make it a sealed indoor room if in warm area.

Furniture is only good for blocking the line of sight in barricated windows/cracks in the walls. Even if you place it properly, it can't take a lot of hits. Pick a room with only doors/windows rather than broken sections of the wall.

You are in Hideout 2, I usually pick the room with the oven and worshop, visible in your pic. Even if the enemies break the door to the smaller room, there is a big chance they won't actually enter the oven/workbench room.

Is Dashbored worth finishing?

My game crashed during the game inside a game bit and I'm wondering whether it's worth fighting the final boss again (took ages and posed no threat). I assume after that point, some kind of bad ending happens because I didn't collect all four of the memories.

I'm torn as I liked some of the game, but it's got too many negatives for me to want to finish it.

Also any links to the good ending or something of the sort on youtube would be appreciated.

Given how the game proper was... I'd say "don't bother". I mean I kinda enjoyed it and it was made by a dude from /indie/ but it was also really yanking the player around with the level of writing and whatnot.

Though for me a game has to be real good for me to bother trying to get a good end.

I like Titan's Quest and Grim Dawn, but I mean actually increasing in scale. Just a hypothetical example of the kind of thing I mean; you start fighting very mortal enemies and you basically stand no chance against supernatural shit on the rare occasion it shows up. At a certain point you become a sort of demigod and the mundane enemies that you have been fighting up until that point get brushed away with relative ease from that point forward and supernatural beings become regular enemies. While originally you had very realistic physical limitations, suddenly you can pretty much leap mountains in a single bound.

It just keeps escalating from there until eventually you are flying through space at trillions of trillions of times the speed of light and fighting galaxy-sized beings.
>>
>>187678450
It's not exactly the premise or even what you're intended to do, but you can pretty much snap the world in half in Morrowind if you know what to do.
>>
>>187679252
I actually was thinking of bringing up Morrowind. Hell, that game is actually why I want a game to go even further with that kind of thing. You start as borderline cripple who dies to rats and end as a god (who literally can leap over a mountain in a single bound now that I think about it).

How do you deal with Banshees when you're barricaded all but 1 entrance? 2nd hideout, workshop & oven room. She just came through the bathroom, no ways to run, so I just got raped. Do you just unbarricade a way when you see the crows?

The best solution is to avoid coming into contact with them at all. But when you can't do that you just have to kill the babies as quick as possible. They don't do as much damage as it seems, and they go down very easily. They're there to make you panic.
>>
So what's the deal with darkwood? You run out during the day scavenging supplies before hunkering down somewhere to fight off night time sieges? If I like exploration will I probably like darkwood's gameplay?
>>
>>187687720
Make a square of gasoline around the place you are standing in

Equip a lamp and molotovs as soon as you see the crows flying over the hideout

Throw a molotov at the banshe as soon as it walks in, tgen immedietaly throw another one to set the gasoline square on fire. You could also throw a match if you don't want to waste a molotov, but switching weapons cost time and time is crucial.

The fire from moltov you threw at the banshee plus the square should be enough to kill the babies, but I would equio a pistol and start shooting anyways.

>inb4 what if another banshee walks in
You are fucked. Throw a moltov at it, tgen another one between you and it, take a pistol out, shoot at the babies and prey they are dead before they close the distance.

Don't do this unless it its the first hideout.
You want to barricade every way in since you are guaranteed to have at least one entrance breached every night.
>>
>>187699843
If you know how to manage yourself through external changes and whatnot (and don't actually have depression), you're not constantly trying to force yourself to do anything, you just do it.

But if you try to "just" do it without any of that, you invariably end up getting distracted, find yourself not in the mood, can't follow through, etc.

I prefer my loadout desu. The shovel is far, far better for melee combat when you're forced into it in my experience, its hitbox extends past the visual range of the actual shovel when you swing and it ends up being almost 2 and a half times longer than the axe reach.

Ironic considering even with the "tree is real" belief 90% of the game was some fucked up tree-induced dream.

I prefer the idea that the guy was part of some soviet battalion that had been burning down civilian villages during the war. (Which was a very real thing that was done, scorched earth. burn the crops, slaughter the livestock.)

In sucb a way he would either be dead or suffering a very severe psychotic episode, the wpods being the traumatic memories of the war overtaking his psyche to such an eztreme he can't escape from it.

You are wrong. Almost all the events that take place in the game are real, there is only a handful of dreams/hallucinations.

>I prefer the idea that the guy was part of some soviet battalion that had been burning down civilian villages during the war. (Which was a very real thing that was done, scorched earth. burn the crops, slaughter the livestock.)

That's just your fanfiction that is not supported by anything found within the game whatsoever.

>>187741336

Im the complete opposite, i find literal storytelling incredibly basic, especially in a game like darkwood that really seems to be delving into psychological and metaphysical concepts. Characters within fake realities can represent a vast array of things from emotions and aspects of the character to interpretations of real people. A "real" setting to me is just denying layers of complexity and is almost always shit for "deep" stories
>>
>>187742624
That shit is why I prefer concrete games. Now we're going to get a shitload of retarded theory about how the wolfman doesn't exist and you're the one eating the girl, or how the musician is an alternative self, while the Doctor is your Id or some crap.

Feels like your taking a game designed to leave room for interpretation open, and getting upset that somebody has a different interpretation.

For me there is way too much in the visual design for me to even remotely consider the game to be rooted in reality, even ignoring the fact that the player spends the entire game eating hallucinogenic drugs. Just look at the way they played around with field of view, many things are different when you look at them when you don't. The tree rpots during the time freeze, the large sow doesnt exist when facing away from it(its corpse replaced with a sheet strewn across some logs) there's the carbpn copy of hideout1 in the old forest that is completely destroyed and consumed by webs. The floor gore shit that obliterates you. At most the player is in the real world but so hopped on magic mushrooms he is hallucinated half the setpieces.

The world reminds me a lot of silent hill, esp. Silent hill 2.
>>
>>187742797

What? Are you too unintelligent for deeper storytelling?
>>
>>187743494
>Feels like your taking a game designed to leave room for interpretation open, and getting upset that somebody has a different interpretation.
It's one thing to interpret things differently, it's another to pull things out of your ass when it's completly unsupported by anything found in the game.

>For me there is way too much in the visual design for me to even remotely consider the game to be rooted in reality, even ignoring the fact that the player spends the entire game eating hallucinogenic drugs.
You get dreams after reaching new dose tiers. The protagonist's perception is clearly flawed, that does not make the entire thing a dream.

> Just look at the way they played around with field of view, many things are different when you look at them when you don't. The tree rpots during the time freeze, the large sow doesnt exist when facing away from it(its corpse replaced with a sheet strewn across some logs)
You see how those places looked like in the past when they are not in your field of view. Those are protagonist's memories.

> the carbpn copy of hideout1 in the old forest that is completely destroyed and consumed by webs
Not the only destroyed hideout you encounter in the game.

>The floor gore shit that obliterates you.
You would know why it haunts the player if you paid attention to the protagonist's backstory. It's explained why he needs the protective gas while the native inhabitants don't.

> At most the player is in the real world but so hopped on magic mushrooms he is hallucinated half the setpieces.
As I said, his perception is clearly flawed, but it's not a dream.

>The world reminds me a lot of silent hill, esp. Silent hill 2.
Silent Hill clearly establishes that the Otherworld exists and you are not in the real world.

Darkwood does not, in fact it clearly establishes that the woods and all the horrors it produces are real.

>Honestly "It-was-all-in-your-head" twists just seem like lazy writing to me since the author can just handwave plotholes and general inconsistencies as "its just a dream bro don't think too hard about it" since nothing that happened really mattered.

I think that a well done "all-in-your-head" story is one of the best stories that can be done, but really in a lot of situations this guys statement ends up being true, but a problem is when somebody who just flat out dislikes this kind of story telling method blankets them all as shit. sometimes the ambiguous confusion is half the point of the story. not everything is meant to be wrapped up in a neat little package.

I really do think binding of isaac's ending was shit though. all of it being in his head was so painfully obvious to the story that anybody who didn't realize it from minute 1 is retarded, but the overarching idea of the suicidal kid battling his demons really should have ended on a more positive note. him dying in the end was lazy. "nigga u ded" was banal as fuck considering they'd been hammering it into your skull since 15 endings ago. isaac not actually being dead, and the representations of him as dead being another aspect of his imagination, a representation of his suicidal desire to die, would have made a better story.

something I secretly wanted was that isaac was sexually abused by his father, who is chased out of Isaac's life by his mother when she found out. This causes them to move into a shitty shack house where his mother can't afford to give isaac toys, a nice bedroom, or even clothes. Isaac blames his mother and her religious beliefs for his shitty life, but eventually turns to blame himself for causing the divorce. Eventually Isaac in a final final final etc. confrontation would return to face mega-satan, who in a new final form is revealed to be his dad (dad's key opening the door). This allows him to finally come to terms and leave the chest.
>>
>>187745365

if you couldn't tell binding of isaac wasn't the kid's imagination you must have a learning disorder. it wasn't even a twist, it was the entire game.

From what I've seen of the early access, the writing is taking a turn towards the pedantic. More than Sunless Sea, it feels as if they just have thesaurus opened up and pick at random. The language in Sunless Sea and SOME of Fallen London is usually utilized to help along with the sense of mystery and intrigue. Sunless Skies' appears like padding.

Fuck, the dev hasn't updated in several years and I have a boat load of gripes right out the door.

* Super slow menus (somehow he thought a 1 second pause between each button was a good idea...)
* "Search" mechanic has really goddamn small triggers, meaning you'll be flailing around like a retard just to find the spot where you're allowed to search even though you JUST saw it (and this is with things as big as a normal door, not something hidden...)
* Every so often input gets killed, and I have to lift my finger off and back onto the move button to keep moving.
* Combat pacing is awkward, in part due to the slow menus thing

I guess I should have done more research before buying it reeeee. Several people were suggesting it so I thought it had to be good...

I'm new so I don't know how dangerous it would be to run around with a lantern equipped outside the protective bubble your hideout provides.

I initially thought there were just the two chompers and I figured I could outmaneuver them well enough indoors while staying hidden. Once I saw there were more I tried to make my way outside but I got cornered and got ripped a new asshole.

For the handful of people who bought that indie Japanese game Sorcerland 3~ years ago, a dude on twitter fully translated the dialogue and cutscenes in the game. The developer's been silent since January 2015, so it's unlikely he'll come back. Not sure if anyone here actually did play it, but in the off chance;

Running around is an unecessary risk, you attract more enemies, become vulnerable to enemies waiting around a corner or banshees or being surrounded, etc.

It's much more reliable to keep one large room with no window/door-less entrances, barricade all of them (you should be swimming in nails and planks when you reach hideout 2 anyways), quickly kill whatever comes inside and repair the barricade. Even better if you set up bear traps outside all but one exit , broken glass in the inside and surround yourself with gasoline in case of banshees.

Hideout 1 has only dogs and rarely savages, but they seem to are completly unaware of where you are if they don't see you. So far I never had any enemies come into my saferoom (the room with the front door that you need to open when you hear the kocking) with one barricaded door and the other one blocked with a wardrobe, I could spend the nights being afk there.

Hideout 2 has huge dogs and savages, enemies seem to have a vague idea of where you are even without a line of sight. Usually 2 savages will try to break the barricades and reach you every night, but they are easy enough to handle even with a planks with nails, banal with a shovel or a pistol if you have an abundance of ammo. I usually pick the room with the oven and workbench.

I rarely spend nights in Hideout 3, chompers are a pain to fight in melee (especially in small rooms) and you can easily spend nights in Dry Meadow/Silent Forest and still explore the Old Woods. Not only that, it sucks because the rooms are all cramped and there's a lot of window/door-less entrances. When I do spend the nights there, single shot shotgun is the best option by far, kills chompers in 1 shot and you should have tons of shells at this point on the game.

Hideout 4 is not bad, there's that one big room with 2 windows and 2 doors, very easy to defend as you can cover all of them by standing in one corner.

>>187839001

What? The best way to combat banshees is to run away from them, what do you just trigger them and intentionally get yourself surrounded? Staying in one position with barricades is basically just waiting to get attacked, because once they get in (and they always do eventually) there's nothing left to do but fight them. While in hideout 3, I go the top room, barricade the window, and close but don't barricade the doors. When someone starts coming through one door, I go out the other, and whoever was trying to get in will have considerable trouble finding you again.

Hideout 3 is only hideout you can consistently avoid, not only banshees, but fights of most kinds. I have had by far the most completely combat-free nights in Hideout 3. If the enemies don't actually see you, they have a pretty hard time of getting to you. The real 'unnecessary risk' is getting into a fight at all when you could simply avoid it. You spend ammo, melee durability, and even health. At worst, you get a fight that you were going to get otherwise.
>>
>>187775914
nah
>>
>>187840358
>What? The best way to combat banshees is to run away from them
No, the best way to combat banshees is to barricade all entrances since they are incapable of breaking them down.

> what do you just trigger them and intentionally get yourself surrounded?
Ring of gasoline kills babies just fine ig it manages to get through.

>Staying in one position with barricades is basically just waiting to get attacked, because once they get in (and they always do eventually) there's nothing left to do but fight them.
Yeah, the point is you will fight them under perfect conditions and have an overwhelming advantage, something you won't have if you get into a fight while running around.

>While in hideout 3, I go the top room, barricade the window, and close but don't barricade the doors. When someone starts coming through one door, I go out the other, and whoever was trying to get in will have considerable trouble finding you again.
There is always a risk of bumping into an enemy who is around the corner or even a bashee if you don't know where it is yet.

>If the enemies don't actually see you, they have a pretty hard time of getting to you.
You will have a harder time avoiding them if you don't know where they are either.

>The real 'unnecessary risk' is getting into a fight at all when you could simply avoid it.
No, there is nothing risky about getting into fights with an overwhelming advantage . Putting yourself at risk of getting into a fight where you don't have that advantage however is risky.

>>187840358

>You spend ammo, melee durability, and even health.
Melee weapons are dirt cheap to repair and you will have an abundance of ammo and healing items, nails, planks, scrap, rags and all other base resources by the time you reach hideout 3.

Night invasions are the best moments to use your resources anyways since exploring during the day is far less dangerous. You won't be able to bring all that stuff to the Swamp, you should be using it to have better odds of surviving.

>At worst, you get a fight that you were going to get otherwise.
No, at worst you have to fight 2 chompers who were around a corner while being pursued by a banshee from the other side. Good luck with that.

Doesn't make much of a difference on normal on hard, but on nightmare you are mostly concerned with avoding the worst case scenarios. The worst that can happen while barricading is much more manageable than the worst of running around.

>Melee weapons are dirt cheap to repair and you will have an abundance of ammo and healing items, nails, planks, scrap, rags and all other base resources by the time you reach hideout 3.
Again, if you can avoid a fight, it doesn't matter if you have a lot of supplies to fight them off or a little, you're good either way. While, for your part you just keep going "W-well you should have a lot anyway!"

You keep insisting that just standing your ground in a room is an "overwhelming advantage", when it isn't really. The only real advantage you have is traps. They're great but they're certainly not "overwhelming". I have never once bumped into an enemy while running from another, but you're just going to insist it's pure luck and continue hammering "you'll run into another enemy!", so I'm not sure if I should bother. If you feel the obligation to kill everything that comes to your hideout be my guest, but I prefer to save my supplies when I can.

>Again, if you can avoid a fight, it doesn't matter if you have a lot of supplies to fight them off or a little, you're good either way. While, for your part you just keep going "W-well you should have a lot anyway!"
It's not that you should have a lot of supplies. You will have a lot of them by that point.

>You keep insisting that just standing your ground in a room is an "overwhelming advantage", when it isn't really.
It absolutely is. You know the exact direction and moment where the enemy will come in, you iknow what enemy it is, you can position yourself correctly, you can use whatever consumable and pick whatever weapon you want, the barricades keep you from getting swarmed by multiple enemies, the list goes on.

> I have never once bumped into an enemy while running from another
So in other words you were never unlucky enough to experience how badly can it end up.

> but you're just going to insist it's pure luck and continue hammering "you'll run into another enemy!", so I'm not sure if I should bother.
You are not guranteed to run into another enemy, but it's a risk. That's why it's more risky, plain and simple.

>If you feel the obligation to kill everything that comes to your hideout be my guest, but I prefer to save my supplies when I can.
If you prefer to keep those supplies (that you soon won't have enough space for and won't be able to take all of them to Chapter 2) and have a greater chance of dying then good luck, you will most certainly need it.
