The EE Lightning was designed in 1947 and could do Mach 2.
But Western air forces lost the requirement for flat-out high speed interceptors a long time ago, mostly because ICBMs and nuclear subs make it stupid to want to drop a nuke from an aeroplane and better detection abilities. You also have to make a lot of compromises to build an interceptor, they typically aren't good for anything else. Typhoons can hit the same speed as the Lightnings could and are more than quick enough to escort Russian bombers that have unaccountably wandered into our airspace. Funny these Russian planes, they seem to get lost several times a week but only the bombers. The Mail reports this as news but only if its a quiet day and the lads have got particularly good photographs. They see each other so often that in December they like to hold up Christmas messages etc.
Of course the deeper truth of all this is that air combat has been deprecated for a long time already. There haven't been many air to air missiles launched with any intent since the one (x1, they filmed it from different angles) the USAF let them launch for filming Top Gun.
