Why is there so much unpredictable shit in this game that will fuck you hard and wreck hours of intense tactical focus?

I finally got on a roll and then made the mistake of trying to hack a console in a van, whilst in the van, whilst in concealment, with a pod outside.
Imagine my surprise when, instead of the specialist's gremlin just activating the console from the adjacent tile on which I was stood (literally right next to the fucking thing) it instead decided to fly out the van, do a 'fuck you' loop-de-loop about 3 inches from the sectoid's face and then hack the console through the side of the van from about 2 meters away.

Obviously this broke concealment, obviously this caused a fucking shitstorm.
Thankfully, only my specialist took a hit because of half cover because for reason the back end of an open van door is only half cover despite being full height and I managed to mitigate the damage by using up all my explosives but still, shit like this happens all the time as I'm learning the game.

Wiped my squad the next map when a sectoid panicked my ranger who managed to nestle a perfect fucking grenade throw right in between two of my guys (sitting high up on the roof with that sweet elevation bonus) who promptly fell to their deaths below. Not really a bug, just a classic 'that's xcom, baby!' moment. The kind that always strike when you're already at your fucking wits end.

I don't mind losing either but having to fucking roll the dice through gatecrasher like 3 times just to get a smooth start all while the camera gets pulled off you every time new enemy shows up... I don't know how I haven't thrown my screen through the window yet.

Correct. Interacting with an objective, whether it's a hack or planting explosives, always breaks concealment. hacking a robot or turret actually doesn't, so long as the hack succeeds. You'll be spotted if it fails.

Also, this is a tip more than a rule but unless it's a very good bonus or a very easy hack and the tower is far from the objective, you shouldn't be spending turns hacking shit if you have LOS on enemies.

The problem is that the Templar joined as a squaddie, so when he opens the soldier-select screen he doesn't see it. That's literally the biggest reason why he doesn't take out the Templar; "I need to bring out my high-ranking soldiers so I don't get spanked, what high-level soldiers are available?" Streamers and letsplayers are social creatures by nature, the reason they are "good" is because they exist within social circles of people that talk about the game and know how to play the game, thus they learn and/or adapt.

When a new game comes out and they are given early access, they don't have that crutch, because they have to learn things by themselves, and since they are "exceptional individual" they show their true nature as under performing players and make constant and retarded mistakes. Once the expansion is out and people that know what they are doing tell them how to play with the new classes and stuff you'll see a change in how they play.

I don't mind the ADVENT troops being the bottom of the food chain, which they are. It drives home what the aliens are in the process of doing with humanity, which is turning it into another one of its slave races (except for the bodies they'll make for themselves).

It might be different if ADVENT troops were the biggest and baddest enemies in the game, but as it stands they're just the bottom part of the pyramid - the largest proportion, but also the least glamorous.

Actually if we are talking about rank hierarchy it probably goes from non psionic units to most psionic units. So a sectoid probably outranks a commander while a gatekeeper outranks everyone short of an avatar.

Of course, I imagine a gatekeeper giving commands to people probably causes them to bleed out of every hole in their face.

The photobooth doesn't load mods by default, but you can force it to load mods, and when people used cosmetics some broke because the shaders in the photobooth were different.

But like i said, it's possible that the photobooth is just missing shaders because it's a stand alone gutted version of WoTC, so maybe cosmetics wont break at all, or they could break even more, who knows.

Not really. Templars are melee range, Skirmishers are close range, Reapers are mid range.

Reapers aren't snipers. Their damage isn't amazing, they should mostly be scouting, looking for flanks and picking off wounded enemies to maintain Shadow as long as possible. Skirmishers need to operate in the same range bracket as a Ranger; their gun has stiff range penalties so if you aren't aggressively moving in, you're going to miss a lot. And the Templars' few ranged abilities are fairly mediocre compared to their basic Rend attack.

I feel like the game felt too bad for raping him too hard and threw him a bone. That 33% success hack on a mec saved him as well as the fact that he had LOS on the objective from his specialist's position. The Assassin is boring. I'm glad that most of the time she'll be the first to die. Fortunately the other two make up for her - the Warlock is a fantastic, scenery-chewing baddie and the Hunter is a lot funnier than I imagined he would be. Honestly I don't feel they talk too much either, they add a lot of personality to the game. It'll probably be a bit of a shame when all three get bumped off.

I kind of feel bad for the Hunter. Like it's pretty obvious he hates the Elders and just wants to be left alone to hunt Chryssalids and Mutons, but they'll boil his brain out if he doesn't do what they tell him. It's sort of a shame you can't recruit him in some way.

Turn based games are always wonky wiht that sort of thing. I always imagine in OG XCOM that turns were 20-30 seconds. Especially since there's just so much wandering about. I know atleast on average i'll spend 5-6 turns just exploring.
