Given that weapons have static rolls, there need to be a lot more weapons that before, so it's unsurprising that there would be multiples for each faction.

Factions desperately need a better system around them. In D1 there was basically no reason to go past rank 3 other than packages for the longest time, and then when they added the quest at what was it 20? 25? All it did was grant an exotic class item which was basically useless and a couple weeks later they added legendary class items that look exactly like the exotics so there was no reason to even rank up for that if you just wanted it for the appearance.

Faction issue quests and bounties that drop gear unique to those faction quests would be quite interesting.

Like imagine at ranks 10, 30, and 50 the faction loadout would add an extra set of armor and weapon, as well as give you a quest at each corresponding tier that would teach you more about the faction and ultimately give you a faction exotic, first class item, then armor, then weapon. And each one could also grant you a special shader and emblem that can only come from those rankups.

What I'm looking forward to is a lot of exotic-looking armors.

Like the big thing in Destiny was how unique and distinct exotic shit looked and a lot of people that asked for multiple exotic early on wanted not the perks but the looks, because so much legendary shit just looked weak. Now in D2 a lot armor pieces you look at and you can't tell if its exotic or legendary at first glance and I like that. Everything feels unique, its that proper RPG feel and if they double down on that and give us crapton of armor sets to chase after, I'll be happy.

Also I just thought about this while writing this post but, the slot for shaders on the gear, it doesn't say shader slot, it says mod slot. Now there are actual gear mod, but with the visual slot also being being called mod slots, its possible spektar and ornaments are coming back. We know exotic ornaments are coming back but we could see armor-neutral ornaments come through, like they said there were effects you can put on your character to show off progression and shit. That might be stuff you slot directly into the armor. (Imagine getting a permanent nightfall flame decal for helmets, or holiday head consumables becoming helmet ornaments) Since every piece of gear looks like it can hold ten shaders/ornaments. They could be going this way with visual customization. So you can have your favorite armor piece and just a dozen different looks for it in its sub-menu.

Yeah, the uniqueness of the gear is something I appreciate a lot. Especially after destiny 1 which after dlc 1 was all generally just the same geometry on guns and armor mixed and matched around. The fact that faction armor is more than just repaints of other gear has me psyched.

How the recoil behaves (Optics/muzles in the first column)
How the weapon behaves (Magazine/stock mods in the second column)
How the ammo behaves (Explosive rounds, ricochet rounds, etc...)

Its pretty safe to assume mods modify how the player behaves. As in mods that change stuff about you, like stuff that affects cooldown and mobility, and/or effects and stats new to Destiny 2.

This is not exactly fundamentals, you're talking about mod system.

Destiny 2 is a new game in the series, so it should be looked at as a new game rather than as an expansion. But at the same time It is a second game, not a brand new IP so any mechanics should be looked at as an improvement over existing system rather than a brand new mechanic. With this understanding, there's absolutely nothing "fundamental" about a mod system being introduced on top of the existing perk system.

Gemslots means you will still have the motivation to perform activities over and over for a better or more appropriate gem, while at the same time your base weapon is no longer a lottery between usable and unusable.

If there are weapons which are less useful in the current meta you will be able to know which ones are weak and avoid redoing those activities beyond the first time for completion's sake. If that particular weak weapon doesn't drop during that first run, no sweat. I think its a better system overall as it gives players more agency.

I didn't even look at any piece of gear's perk tree outside of unlocking the nodes until way into the dark below. I purely picked weapons for their appearence and just learned how to git gud with them.

I think the new system is a nice compromise between random rolls and reforge. People wanted reforge back but ultimately they didn't care about re-rolling weapons, they just wanted the ability to get that one specific roll on each weapon, and what happened is a lot of garbage "Your gun a shit because not same roll as mine so we won't play with you" type of crap. Now with every weapon having one set roll, everyone plays on an even footing, and its only going to get better since they can now balance on the fly, and edit each weapon individually rather than having to hit a whole archetype.
