Alright let settle this, Skirmisher vs Archer, who wins?

Archer is def stronk right now in tome, capable of almost oneshotting every single enemy you see with bullshit aim, poison arrow, called shot and concealment combo. However if you're not Skelebro they seem to be bretty squishy early to mid game.

However. Skirmisher is a bretty cheeky cunt capable of ignoring obstacle and enemies and hit someone at the back no prob. Plus they'll never ever run out of stamina and have higher resist than Archer. They also have more debuff that stack and proc more than Archer iirc.

What old version of stone soup is the best? I'm not really interested in the features of the more modern versions. The first version I've ever played was 0.16 so I'm leaning towards going back to that but I've heard a lot of good things about 0.15 and 0.14. 0.10-12 is a good choice if you want "classic" crawl, before the removals really ramped up and the gameplay was streamlined

Shadow Fairy stats are really something else.

This character is finally coming into its own somewhat.

Shadow fairy ninjas are the only class in the game that can actually stab with two rune swords, because they still somehow qualify for stabs.
The only problem (other than their life rating!) is the fact that heavier weapons (RS are 15 pounds apiece) are more difficult to hit with, but you still get a guaranteed hit on a sleeping monster and SF stop the innate aggravation.

Then again it might be a bug, because I remmeber doing this back in pseudoellipos-R when you could start with a single unremovable rune sword.
I'll wizmode it out right now.

That's what I'm about to find out! I personally did remember stabbing stuff and not getting [heavy wield] on my starting runesword, so again that might be a bug, but imagine if it wasn't. I remember a guy stabbing the serpent of chaos with a 3d3 weapon for half his health on a lucky roll, the amount of carnage a 8d8 (+15,+15) weapon could do is too good to pass up.
TWO 8d8 weapon stabs are just too ridiculous to even think about, which is why I totally wanna wizmode it.

AFAIK the -R behavior is not a bug but an intentional feature. The forced-runesword option sets every character's max runesword proficiency to master instead of what it would normally be, so even ninjas or sorcerers can become proficient in them.

yeah that's what I said last week, but that winning water elemental actually managed to get them to pretty high dice combos last week so maybe It's not *that* bad. Besides, if the stab damage depends on the HP of the enemy instead of the damage of the weapon you're carrying, it'd be better to just not play a 87% liferating race just to exploit a gimmick in a 6 month old fork.

The thing is that Chris is all for grinding, but only *his* favorite spots, I.E. hydras and hounds for earlygame and dragons at XL 30+. When this starts falling down and he saw people were conga-ing wyrms with elemental immunities, he removed the clone monster wand altogether. When he saw people were going into high DL dungeons to read acquirement, he created guardians. Personally I think the removal of 555 wasn't too bad an idea because of the sheer ridiculous drops it gave, but he should have kept the lava-lake in 666 as an easter egg, considering that no items can spawn there, but the addition of guardians is kind of silly. Not to mention the new reforge rules, which are simply retarded.

It's certainly complex.
The depth drops rapidly as you learn what is useful and what is just pure bloat for realismfags to masturbate to, though.
It did improve relatively recently, with bits of proper balancing here and there instead of just features for sake of features.

It has a lot of potential, but due to terrible aversion to good game design (good game design is unrealistic), most of it is wasted.

Play the "cool days ahead" instead of the main branch. It has some fixes to bullshit, most importantly it has ranged combat that isn't pure shit.

I haven't seen either of those items, but a dildo doesn't seem to egregious if its just a dump item you take the batteries out of like the talking doll. I guess you can use the doll as a noise distraction but I've never been in a position where moderate sound would make a useful distraction.
Game could probably use more low powerlevel weapon variety. I'm sorely disappointed you can't make a bolas but you can turn a wheelchair into a rolling explosive lightshow. Almost feels like they built an RPG around a vehicle building game

Qud has relatively tolerable mutation system: when you get new powers, you pick one out of 3. That way it is still random, but doesn't totally lock the player down with shitty RNG that totally wrecks a promising character.

Stats are low-impact in a lot of games (not T4 or Incursion) but even in DCSS there's a significant difference endgame in all INT vs low INT, and DCSS is a game already guilty of low character building differentiation besides god choice.

Weapon switching is a thing in most roguelikes because frankly if ranged is an option you have no reason not to take advantage of it, but usually to not such a blatantly exploitative degree as this. PCB and Elona do it the best by just having dedicated ranged slots. Adding a dedicated ranged slot would also incidentally make ranged skills make more sense.

The watered-down skill system is virtually exclusive to Tangledeep. The draw of combining jobs in an RPG is to build synergies, whereas Tangledeep has very few synergies to begin with. 90% of the game's skills are just costly, high-cooldown damaging abilities that interact with pretty much nothing whatsoever, while the other 10% are low--impact passives and toggles. Most roguelikes don't have a skill system to begin with, so the comparison ends up being something like DCSS which dedicates a tremendous amount of detail to its skills while still often coming up lacking, or even DCSS which actually does heavily emphasize comboing different skill categories together.

The lack of rare drops without resorting to outright item world farming is inexcusable, and obviously due to the shallow item pool. That can be reasonably expected to be filled in over time though, unlike the skill system that needs to be heavily adjusted.

I think wells are safe to drink, but I don't remember for sure.

For rainwater the system is extremely dumb and rolls for contamination when the first unit of water is collected. So if you get sick drinking your funnelled water, you will always get sick until you dump it out and start collecting again. If you don't get sick the first time you will never get sick if you never empty the container.

If you bottled it yourself from a river or something, it needs to be boiled.

I saw the percentages, it told me I have 3.8% chance to successfully repair and 1.6% chance for failure.
Except as soon as the item is fully repaired, that percentage goes to 0% successfully refit, 5% failure, so basically impossible.

The problem is that when you examine a damaged item and tell it to repair+reinforce, it never tells you that it's impossible to refit, only shows that it's an easy repair. You can only see the refit success chance if you repair first, stop, and look at it again.

So a lot of it depends on which god you take, pretty good ones, in no actual order, are gozag, ash, kiku, dith, oka and i might be missing one, and depending on the god youre either in mercy of a bit of luck or guaranteed stuff, obviously..
As for what you should do, skillwise and playwise, train spellcasting, hexes and all the stuff you need from the book to cast it without high rate of failure and without that much hunger, if you see a book with invis, darkness or anything similar, try getting that book, invis will carry you to atleast 2 runes no matter what..
So for example what i do is get spellcasting early on to 4 to have hibernation on cast without any hunger, bit of ice magic and hexes to get it down low enough, continue training hexes and spellcasting to get confuse on 0 hunger and low fail rate, if i get lucky with an ice book to get ice armour from it, even better, if not, no big deal, if i see monsters arent dying in 1 hit from a sleep stab, i get short blades and stealth up, more specifically i usually get lvl 3 - 5 daggers before d:7 and use one red monster onto stealth only to get it to 9 - 12 which is usually more than enough for lair and everything, combined with the short swords level obviously so that pretty much anything at this point dies to a sleep stab except maybe a death yak or some unique or some other retarded bullshit
I mean, im no expert, i won a few games as SpEn under 3 different gods so i just adjust accordingly what i need and sometimes just pray to rng to confuse that unique which i have 5% succcess rate of confusing to kill it and similar stuff..

Stop training short sword at 8, 10 max, because youll be using daggers all the time pretty much, once you get spellcasting and hexes and other magic schools at high level, train stealth only pretty much, switch to according school when needed, bucklers are your friends as well at some point into the game and dont be afraid to use some offensive spells
And kiku because pain short blade + great spells like bolt of draining, animate skeleton, simulacrum and similar stuff which let you go through depths and beyond with ease, especially simulacrum, that spell is retarded as fuck, kiku is a god of necromancy in case you didnt notice that so all his stuff revolve around undead and evil stuff, only regeneration is affected by charms, hexes and necromancy i believe.. But yeah, in general, you go kiku for the pain dagger, remember that pain damage is base damage + 1d[necromancy level], so higher the level, more damage you do
