You can get a 5+ minute core easy without the level 20 bonus, me and a pub were able to kill nuke Titans faster than they spawned on wave 5 of hard Rise for a solid 5 minutes with this kit.

So I know the best strategy for Frontier Defence is to go out and destroy the enemies at their spawn when they're separated and still assembling, but is it only me or is the mode way more fun if you bunker down around the harvester and fight the horde when everything comes at you at once ?

I decided to ignore them for a moment and focus on the Reapers since it was far away and then BUM! Ion's abilities are pretty average, but it's alt fire is where it shines.


The alt fire (splitter shot, drains energy) gets buffed via aegis upgrades. Combo with 5-way splitter kit and the later upgrades that boost your total energy pool and it just melts everything.

If you're using the Grav Star to affect other people's movements, then there's no way to look at it in any other way than as a crutch. Every positive aspect listed, barring its use on ejecting pilots, can have the grav star element cut out if you can move, aim, and shoot fast. Even if theoretically you weren't able to miss a beat, then it's still a crutch because you're not confident enough in your aiming.

Grav Stars are fun though, especially against titans, but against pilot's they're the tool of the slow

I also might be completely wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure Sword Core gives you a lot of knockback as well. I used it on War Games earlier and bullied a couple of titans into a pit. Dunno if that was from just meleeing at all or the Core. If that's the case, keep that in mind if you want to pin someone down, especially when paired with Arc Wave.

There are times when you're going to be the prey and at those times you have to find cover. The enemy is going to chase you through that cover and you'll have to be ready for him and you both know that. What he doesn't know is that you have a grav star. So you chuck it in timely fashion, fire off a blue ball, and keep moving. This isn't necessarily faster but it also isn't slower.

Here's the thing mate, and you said it yourself, a lot of these can be remedied by snagging a blue plate, or if that projectile's too slow for your tastes, use of a Firestar. Even if we're talking about situations where you won't necessarily be slowed down in theory, that's still using it as a crutch if you're not confident in being able to snag that kill while on the go. Then if we're talking about forgoing pride in favor of securing the objective, then, well, we would all be using hitscan, wouldn't we? The only one that really becomes valid with explanation is the use of it to gain momentum, and I already thought that went without saying.

Point for point, the Grav Star is a crutch. Is it fun? Sure. Is it OP? Not at all. Is it something you can use without through use of more skill and speed? Absolutely. The fact that it doesn't clinch a kill just means that you're using it as another step to get that blue plate when you can just skip to that sweet sweet reward, and if you're using it to get a kill from "where you already are," then you can afford to get moving instead.

Heres some Ronin autism,

Melee-
Ronin's sword has a stupid amount of range, learning its max distance is important as sticking to maximum sword range lets you dash beside/behind your foes with a single dash, and lets you dash up to them after melee knock back without getting stuck on their titan and taking hits you shouldn't. Sword core still has knock back, at further range you will need to follow up with a dash, at close range you should be able to get two hits in unless they are moving back. Sword core while doing large damage will always do about 50% of a doomed titans hp pool, this gives plenty of time for the enemy pilot to eject and knock off a chunk of your life, always be ready to dash back when trying to kill doomed titans, sword block is usually to slow to reduce the damage on this.

Blocking-
Unless there is nothing around and you need the marginal speed boost, you should always be blocking while spamming dashes to move about instead of sprinting. Also sword block gets a big bonus.

Arc wave-
As already stated Arc wave gets amped and larger, this one shots pilots, does about a full bar of titan health, and half a bar of doomed titan health, in normal games use it to open up on enemy titans, to ruin enemies' ability to turn to get behind them, or to finish a doomed titan that didn't eject after a sword hit.

Phase-
Use it drop smokes when getting behind titans, to escape nukes, also you can prep a arc before a phase but not during it to prevent titans from turning if they haven't already, combos well with smoke.

Titan Kits-
Turbo engine, Overcore, and Counter Ready are all good for sword core, nuke if for faggots.

Ronin Kits-
All are good but Ricochet, Highlander can let your core last long enough to get several arc waves and phases, but Thunderstorm is better guaranteed nuke/crowd control if you can't guarantee a kill or two and is good at finishing doomed titans.

Mate, it's not just me calling it a crutch if you're saying it's used as a way to eliminate error. You can use the Grav Star, or you just just take the guy out. You can account for your projectiles and move accordingly, or you can pin a guy so you don't have to. Sure, it's a far cry from using hitscan to remove that accountability, but if you've got to play it safe, then that's something to work on. You don't have to be the god king of speed to want to perform better, and on top of that, there's a lot more uses for other ordnance if you free up that grav star. I almost fucking lost a homestead FD match on regular because of my team

first time I've ever had to use a god damn retry on this difficulty, I'm so fucking pissed right now

I'm stuck having to babysit the harvester because everyone would literally keep running off going for executes and losing their titans

no one dealt with the cloaked mortar titan until the health got to 25% so I said fuck it and ran over and killed it, run back and the harvester has been swarmed by reapers and we lose the round

meanwhile teammates are on foot or dead, died from fucking nuke titans
you literally have no excuse to die from them on homestead where the map is this fucking open
they kept dying to them on foot too trying to steal batteries or MLG them

MW3's survival mode was my jam and I spent so, so many hours on it; but I can hardly see myself doing the same in FD. I wanna see maps where you're forced to choose between staying in your titan or leaving your titan to its own device while you mow down ground units, or just your titan being more valuable. And more varied units like the boss titans you mentioned, that's the right idea.

I was kind of hoping the mortar spectres would focus on mortaring your Titans where Mortar Titans focus on the Harvester. Means that entrenching is a lot more difficult as you'll be getting mortar'd by infantry.

Anyway, I wish they'd have brought back the Sniper Spectres from the first game that snipe with Longbows and Charge Rifles. AT spectre squads with their dumbfire Archers from the first game and Thunderbolts would also be cool. I think it would also be neat if they had those Shield Captain grunts from the campaign in the early waves that formed phalanxes with their shields, and those Specialist simulacrum dudes running around as scouts harassing you with MGLs and deploying drones. I also feel they missed an opportunity with the Tone mortar dudes to have them launching salvo core barrages and tracker rockets at the harvester while Brute Titans from the campaign acted as mortar Titans.

Or a Safari mode where a Leviathan and a shit ton of Flyers and Prowlers swarm you and you have to fend them off.

It's used across the whole Titanfall 1 OST, particularly the Militia-themed songs (the IMC-themed songs like Demeter and Peace and Order by Force use more electronic/ synth-ey elements).

Honestly, I'd recommend giving the Titanfall 1 OST a listen in it's entirety. It's a fantastic soundtrack and IMO much better and more atmospheric than T2.

Fold Weapon Test is a really nice song (the bit where you run up the frozen explosion in E&C) and I like the opening theme, but yeah everything else feels so generic.

I don't anything aside from Fold Weapon Test really compares to stuff like Cosmology, Demeter, Peace and Order By Force or Welcome To the Marauder Corps. a shame because the first game with its music and aesthetic combined did a fantastic job of establishing a unique "Frontier" feel, where the aesthetic and OST for 2 just feel like any other scifi franchise. There's nothing in 2 really like the wooden huts mixed with the gargantuan carrier, desert base amongst the skeletons or frontier small colony.
