>What the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Underrail, OneShot, Rimworld, Age of Decadence, VA-11 HALL-A, Subnautica, Machinarium, DashBored, Vampire of the Sands, Braid, ((Grimoire)), Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Burrito Galaxy, Gone Home, Stardew Valley, etc. as well as other games that just don't fit in any other general such as Atelier, Rayman, Pillars Of Eternity, Rise Of Nations, and Valkyria Chronicles. Absorbed the /lite/ general some time ago.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie and obscure games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indie and miscellaneous games, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone, except namefags. And be sure to make a new thread if nobody else does.

Long range assault rifle build is actually pretty good once you get Critical Power. Not OP or anything, but decent. Emporion fight was much easier than I expected.

Once you have Critical Power a single crit can deal like 300-500 damage, usually enough to drop most regular enemies in 1 shot, 2 tops. I still can't engage at ranges a sniper could because ARs have terrible precision drop, but with a bit of luck I can kill more enemies each turn than a sniper could. Only 5% move penalty and no close range penalty makes things a lot easier, I can break the line of sight, hide behind corners, etc. freely.

I started my day playing Tokyo-42, it's some isometric world where you become an assassin to prove the world you're not an assassin.
You need to rotate the world all the time, kinda annoying in the middle of a fight since you can leap to your death because of the perspective.
I got a katana but I can't get close to people even if their bullets are slow as hell. Fug.

I remember taking more screenshots, don't know why they didn't get saved.

Throughout my almost two-decade gaming history, there were 2 games that I envied from console gamers: Dragon's Dogma and Red Dead Redemption.

It's arrival to PC made me experience the most honest hype I've felt in the past 5 years. And I don't play J-/ARPGs (at all) but only traditional Western ones.

Yet I enjoyed DD from the first minute and it took more than 100 hours until I craved for variety. So first and foremost, did you reach Gran Soren already?

Numerically it's bigger than ever in terms of number of devs, number of games, budgets of "indie" games. Maybe the buzz has died down. But be careful that you're not extrapolating a personal shift of viewpoint into an industrywide trend. If you got your start any time since the indie boom, you're gonna be biased towards the year you started. Same goes if you were in high school or college during the indie boom, your perception will be skewed.

There are real trends at play here, of course.http://www.lostgarden.com/2016/11/autumn-of-indie-game-markets.html

Speaking of the void, I did a little more work on that base I built in the void in Subnautica
I've found that ascending from said base is a lot quicker if you just go at emergency speed and ignore the engine catching on fire and hull being breached until the Cyclops' health is around 1/3, at which point you'll be a few hundred meters from crush depth anyway, then you just throw up a shield, get outside to repair hull breaches, then pop back in and throw up the fire suppression, then keep going the rest of the way

ARPG means shit like destiny, diablo, path of exile

what the fuck are you talking about with this arpg nonsense

you're playing a role in a game
it's a role playing game
what the fuck is an rpg if the witcher isnt an rpg

do you still need 8bit graphics and samey chiptune music, bad righting, and 4 character limits to names to be an rpg?

rpg=story driven experience
just because you have gameplay doesnt mean it's the focus
you dont call Portal an FPS just because it's first person and you shoot portals, it's a puzzle game because the mechanics serve the design.

Emphasis on plethora of meaningful and impactful choices&consequences in every aspect of the game, from combat mechanics through interaction with the world to endings.

Immersive, well developed world, writing and lore are pretty important as well.

Good effort, but in the end that 67m$ budget went into making a cinematic question mark hunt. I guess it's fair to call it an RPG because it actually tries, but still.

Mechanics serve the design

In COD/Doom, the story serves the shooting, it's a reason to keep fighting. In Witcher, ME, the action serves the narrative.

As you say it, any narrative with any conflict is automatically disregarded.
>>184100680
According to these people's logic, there's no such thing as an RPG, because no game can provide truly meaningful choices, since they're just games. According to them, there's no such thing as narrative for its own sake.

JRPGs are hardly actual RPGs. The very first japanese RPGs were called that because they heavily borrowed from western tabletop RPG combat mechanics.

In other words, nips took RPG combat and make their own games with it, but ignored everything that made RPGs actual RPGs.

You need to play more actual RPGs, pic related.

What was the budget for that? It wasn't indie, but I wouldn't call it AAA. Besides it ended up being a commercial failure, only reinforcing the point.

JRPGs have different idiosyncracies than (W)RPGs. The entire computer RPG genre is hard to define in a succinct manner, but anyone who isn't a total dumbfuck can tell an actual RPG apart from ME's consolitis-ridden popamole shooting.

>The giant headed golden baby is, without question, the greatest and most magnificent idea I have had in my friggin' entire life. Completely spontaneously, without any central decision making, he has become the mascot for the entire game.

>1996 Australian Multimedia Enterprise, Sydney, Australia : "Cleve, we're very interested in this little game project of yours and we'd like to help you complete it in any way we can. Reading over your outline and synopsis, we can't help but notice you've left quite a few details of the game's design and story kind of ambiguous. For example, you've got this NPC character who only has a one-line description ... 'A mysterious interdimensional traveler who pops in and out of the game at odd intervals to engage us in largely pointless and irrelevant discussions of ephemera.' That reads kind of funny on paper, Cleve, but that's the kind of thing we'd need you to flesh out more before we could get involved. For example, what does this character look like? Is he an alien, a ball of energy, what is his story and purpose in the game?" "Well, I was sort of thinking it would be excellent if he was say, a golden baby with a colossal head who floats in midair with all these sparkles around him and constantly looks around with this marvelously exhilarated expression on his face like he is crazy." "I see. That sounds a bit odd and it's also sort of incongruous with the rest of the game. Perhaps you should go off and think some more about this in your synopsis. Maybe a more traditional route for such characters would have wider appeal." "No, I really think he should be a giant floating massive-headed baby. I'm stuck on that idea."

In 2004 I downloaded an free platformer demo called Not Another Mario Clone. It was tough, low-res and had big sprites drawn in an unusual style. Recently I found it in an old backup. I googled around and it seems like it is no longer available from anywhere. The dev doesn't have it on his website. The game's README says,
>For so, so very long, people have been making horrible Mario-wanna-be games called Mario Clones. This is not one of those games. Their Mario Clones (many can be found on TDC) usually consist of NO original graphics (which is highly insulting to me), and ripped music. Plus, they almost always lack ANY interesting gameplay. I HATE THOSE GAMES, WITH A PASSION.
>So here is my game (though it is uncomplete, only 2 levels). It's sole purpose is to show you all that you CAN in fact make an original, and possibly fun, Mario game. And to help those poor Mario-clone-making fools more, this game is open source.
So here I present to you, an ambitious morsel of indie gaming from almost 15 years. You won't find it anywhere else.

That said Underrail engine does have a few issues, especially because it was made with rtwp in mind.

I'm sure everyone had a moment where they couldn't attack without moving half a tile first even though the enemy is clearly in the line of sight. Or even worse, you can't attack the enemy at range without moving even though the enemy can attack you.

>Getting kicked in the balls obviously hurts more if you have balls.
As a matter of fact getting hit in the vagoo is about as painful as getting hit in the balls.

Males actually have it better because there is a good chance you will get hit in the dick instead which is not nearly as bad, while females have no dick to protect them.

Underrail is clearly a feminist power fantasy.

That has jack shit to do with multiplatform ports.
Wasting years to rewrite everything for a completely unsuitable engine (unity or otherwise) would be beyond idiotic, doubly so because multiplatform implementations of XNA 4 exist. And even if it happened, styg's precise permissive field of view implementation would retain the same kinks. Moot point.

What are some games that have secret endings? Secret as in something you are not likely to find without help, or at least playing the shit out of the game.

Legitimate and joke/easter egg endings are both fine. For an example, in Invisible War you can trigger the secret dance party ending if during the last level you pick up the UNATCO flag, carry it to the old office of your boss from the first game, drop it in the toilet, then flush it down.
>>
>>184175581
VtMB has the dancing werewolf ending if you saw the easter egg, and also the Sabbat ending if you have WESP and were inhuman enough by the time you met Andrei.

To the guy who was interested in Expeditions Viking, maybe you should wait a little longer for them to put out another patch.

I'm on a second playthrough, and it turns out that the game has "ongoing issues with savegame persistence" which means if you replay the game, when you get to a questline that requires you to get or do something (in my case, there is a guy in the forest near your hometown looking for his brother and you can find a sword with the brother's name on it to give to the guy) the game might "think" you're on your old save and think you already got the sword, so there is no sword for you to grab, so you can't complete the quest.

It's a shame, I really do enjoy this game, which makes the bugs even more frustrating.

Getting the first turn makes all the difference. You can eat an eel sandwich/hopper steak to get +1 initiative. Paranoia feat gives a +5.

Otherwise you have to build around surviving his first turn. Burrower burger gives +1 CON, more HP is always good.

Carnifex has Opportunist so you getting entangled means he gets 25% damage bonus. Infused siphoner tabi boots give complete immunity to immobilization and are the only sure way to stop him from entangling you. Escape Artist allows you to escape immobilization, but he still will enjoy a 25% DMG bonus on first turn. Yoy can also evade/resist the net but that's a gamble.

Any armor with bonuses vs. melee and bonus HP is good here. This is probably the main reason why I simply love infused pig leather armor with high density padding- pig leather has naturally high DR at the cost of DT so it's effective against high damage attacks and gives +1 CON so more HP. Infused pig leather will have really high DR and adds a huge (60-100) HP bonus on top of the default +1 CON. High density padding adds a small DR bonus and adds a % increase of DR and DT vs. melee attacks. All of this at only 5% more penalty, 20% total. It's the ideal anti-melee armor and good all-around armor since bonus HP is effective defense against everything.

He also has Combo and Cheap Shots so you can end up skipping a turn. There is really no way to prevent that on 1st turn unless you have psi (Locus of Control) or 10 CON (Thick Skull). You won't have a chance to take a Bullhead pill if he acts first.

con.

>>184179752
>>184180658
>How the fuck am I supposed to deal 700 damage in few turns while entangled and intimidated?
Should be easy enough for an SMG build even in one turn. If you get the first turn, I would suggest a flashbang and going into stealth. If it works get close to Carnifex and just keep bursting until he dies. Special Ops, smart goggles/module, muzzle brake/Full Auto and W2C ammo will greatly increase your damage output. Stunning him will drop his evasion to 0 so you should have 95% chance to hit and having Opportunist will further increase your damage by 25%. Stack enough of these things and he will be dead in only a few bursts.

If he gets the first turn, survive and do the same.
>>
>>184175581
Age of Decadnce does have a few fairly obscure endings with very specific requirements. It's a given considering it has dozens of endings.
>>
>>184201393
Huh are there endings that have nothing to do with """""god""""" or blowing everything up?
>>
>>184201802
Depending on your choices and the guild you joined you may not even be aware that either of those things even exist.
>>
>>184201985
Woah.
>>
>>184201802
Basically every faction has an ending, some multiple. The mechant's guild has two possible endings, depending on your actions in the third city(separate from the endings where you wake god up and point him at a leader). The contents are basically politicking and nothing particularly supernatural.

>but not the combat very much
It has probably one of the greatest if not the greatest turn-based combat.

Anyways dealing with dogs (or anything as a matter of fact) is pretty easy once you realize what their weakness is and how to take advantage of it. First of all they have no damage reduction/threshold whatsoever so JHP ammo and frag grenades/mines will kill them very quickly. Second, they don't have opposable thumbs do doors are the ultimate defense against them as long as you odn't attract mutants/muties who can open doors for them.

You can also craft an armor out of sipgoner leather to protect you from acid. Once you kill a few mutated dogs you can make an armor out of their skin which is even better vs. acid. Acid entaglement is easy to avoid with some evasion, Escape Artist feat allows you to escape it.

>they're all gonna blow in that mine
Unles your traps skill is really high and your enemies are really blind, your traps will be quickly spotted and enemies will go around them.

It's best to set up traps in front of closed doors or right behind corner, that way enemies don't have a chance to spot them before walking into them. As for mines, you can just remotely detonate them with a grenade when the enemy gets near. Very few enemies can survive getting hit by a grenade than also sets off multiple mines around them.

Have you guys noticed how few games have a low-fantasy setting...? At least on the mainstream market. Any recommendations from the /indie/ scene...?

(Yes, I already spent few hundred hours with Mount & Blade and it's major mods.)

>>184179212
Now, that's what I meant under "proper playthrough". No game breaking bugs, decent optimization and at least semi-balanced gameplay elements (abilities etc.) and in-game mechanisms (crafting, progression etc.).

The issue is that 1.0.6 is not coming until mid August _at_best_, and since they have to rewrite a lot of code I wouldn't expect it to be flawless on launch. I'd say it'll take until mid-Sept to really put 1.0.6 together.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up. I know I'm going to enjoy this game a lot and I don't want technical issues to spoil the experience. As for your issue, have you tried (re)moving your (previous) saves games?

Die.

Of course, there is another way. After a fairly long time passes you are assumed dead and the door opens up. You are not very likely to live this long however. Not unless you - *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge* - have an armor that gives 100% bio resistance.

Yeah, although that's crafting-dependent. You have to survive for about 3 minutes in there, so CAU armor+Gas mask+bandages could also work, with 37 DT it will take a while before you get contaminated. But that, in turn, depends on having the CAU armor. Meanwhile the Biohazard suit is in DC, and anyone can get it.

It's an option. You can gain exp from eating the small 'o' in the map, some hidden, or killing enemies.

Rabbits are the easiest, then rats and so on. If you are willing to fight, equip yourself, get healing items, although even with that some enemies can oneshot you if underleveled

Oddities. Don't worry, most of them are not particularly hard to find. It's hard to collect them all, but that would put you a good few levels above level cap anyway.

I'm buddy buddy with Faceless but still prefer that little outpost. It just feels right. It feels mine.

>>184263202
>It's a nice idea about collectibles, but is it really hard to find them?
It's not hard find the amount an average player is supposed to find. The system is designed around an average player, not a min-maxer trying to collect every single oddity. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

>Don't want to be underleveled the entire game.
You won't. The game is designed with oddity and its leveling curve in mind, you should hit the max level in the last area in the game, possibly a bit earlier.

Classic make you level faster because it's not balanced nearly as well, it's mostly an afterthought Styg left in the game because there no reason not to. It's basically easy mode.

On the short term, yes. But the level cap is still 25, so the only difference it makes on the long run is that you'll spend a much longer time no longer leveling. The difficulty curve works with oddity much better.

Also, is google trying to tell me something?

Chem pistols immobilize, and the option for elemental damage is nice. I actually like to use them in tandem with normal pistols, for the Gunslinger bonus and Execute.
>>
>>184265917
Well, if you can't fire simultaneously, it doesn't count.
>>
>>184267206
That's why I said technically. It would be fun to have some kind of Rapid Fire/Point Shot mix that allows you to fire both at the same time for a lower AP cost but with reduced precision, but there is nothing like that in the game, so yeah.
>>
>>184266643
They are fine if you only care about the on-hit effect, but they deal way to little damage to make a build focused around them.

Firearm pistols make for both great sidearm and good main weapon. Their greatest strength is that you simply don't give a fuck about anything, you are never at a disadvantage with a pistol.

>hit by crippling strike
No STR requirement

>enemy right next to you
No close range penalty

>need to move before shooting
No move penalty

>enemy far away
10 range with very small precision drop over distance, smallest in the game in fact, same as a sniper rifle.

>melee enemy closing in
Kneecap Shot

>enemy has high evasion
Laser sight for 10% precision, neo luger for another 5%

>enemy has good DR/DT
Pistols have high damage per hit

>enemy has high initiative
+7 initiative from Gunslinger and high DEX mean you have the potential to have the highest initiative possible. I cleared Fort Apogee by simply escaping the area and coming back when I needed to. Even with the 10 initiative penalty I was still guaranteed to act first every single time.

Pistols might not have the sheer sustained damage output of SMGs, but they will deal that damage regardless of situation, every.single.time. I beat the game with a non-crit Neo Luger build and the only time I felt my damage is a bit low was against Tchort

This is fucking impressive from a team that has only 23 devs. Games like this are usually made with teams well over 100.

Also, climbing is in? That is a very pleasant surprise. I'm fairly sure that not even a few months ago they still insisted that although there would be no climbing, the jet pack would compensate for it. Always felt that was a shit excuse, but seems they came around after all.

Objectively, Leah and Penny are the only choices. Abigail is a 16 year old tumblrina. Even if you share her interests, she's blatantly immature. Hayley and Maru are similarly childish. They feel like genuine teenagers while Leah and Penny come off as adults.

It's perfectly acceptable to pursue the three teens if you're a teen yourself, but I'd like to think no one under 23 is on 4chan.

The only acceptable options for an adult are Penny and Leah, but they're both absolutely boring as fuck. They're simply superior to the trio of immature teens, is all.
>>
>>184301676
>what do i need?
That depends.

You need at least 6 STR to use almost all ARs. Huszars require 7, but they are garbage. AUG requires 5.

If you are going ot play the usual burst-focused AR build you will need 7 STR for Full Auto feat.

If you want to wear metal armor you will need 8 STR, unless you want to have 35 AP instead of 50 (you don't).

PER is indeed your main stat. I would take at least 6 AGI to get Sprint, especially if you want to wear metal armor.

Rapid Muzzled 8.6 Hornet is probably the best overall AR when it comes to bursting. Rapid 8.6 Chimera with anatomically-aware scope is not as good at bursting, but has really high critical damage, high enough to 1-shot most enemies if you crit.

Crippling strike will decrease your STR by 2 and make your precision drop considerably and reduce your AP to 35 if wearing metal armor. You might want to carry an SMG or a pistol in the second weapon slot to deal with enemies that use crippling strike. Or just carry a hornet in one slot and a chimera in the other. Or maybe even a sniper rifle. Lots of options here.

90% of NPCs are poorly written, obnoxious special snowflakes.

The whole "you play as the emissary of the bad guy" gimmick is thrown out of the window almost immediately and you just assume a role of the typical murderhobo.

One of the worst rtwp combat I've ever seen. Not as bad as real time Arcanum or Serpent in the Staglands, but terrible nonetheless. Magic was good enough, but other than that it's terrible. I don't even want to get started on the cringy animations.

Leveling system is broken, encourages you to let the tank get hit while everyone else grinds levels by healing him for example.

Non-existent enemy variety. The only enemies that exist in the entire game are: human fighter, human archer, human mage, red ghost, blue ghost and beast. I wish I was exaggerating but I'm not.

Encounter design is completely non-existent as well. Enemies are just randomly placed next to each other in random spots with no thought put into it whatsoever, there is not a single unique encounter like, say, the trap room full of orc archers in BG2. It's even worse than in Pillars of Eternity.

The gameplay is very restrictive and doesn't allow for a whole lot of approaches to combat. Example: You are not allowed to attack neutral NPCs, so the only way to initiate combat is to talk to them first. Talking to NPCs puts you out of stealth so surprise attacks are impossible.

The story ends very abruptly. There is no use for edicts even though there is an entire mechanic for them, clearly cut content, possibly ct to sell it as DLC.

Obsidian is dead if you ask me.

You're exaggerating. It's true AI does some really dumb things sometimes, like using morphine with low HP or allies running into your acid puddles/fire and turning on you, but what AI doesn't do stupid shit sometimes?

Underrail AI does a few smart things as well. Ranged enemies will attempt to break the line of sight at the end of their turn. They will disarm traps if they detect them and run around them in combat. They will throw flashbangs at the end of their turn when they are done dealing damage. Carnifex tactic to net you first, then capitalize on it with Opportunist is pretty good. Crawlers gimmick is pretty nice as well.

Also, friendly fire is something that bothers Styg as well, so it might be tweaked at one point.

Movement is free. There is a good chance the enemy took adrenaline and is under fatigue, too.

There is not a single case where I wished enemy didn't take morphine while under 1/3 HP. It's much better to run in circles while dealing with other enemies that to waste AP on killing the guy. Even against Carnifex it's easier ot run in circles than to try and overcome his dodge/evasion.

Not to mention, it's not something a human being would do. I had the sledge guy in the Arena die after all enemies were killed precisely for that reason. He would survive if he didn't take morphine.

Bonus boss was waaaaaaay more fun than Standstill Girl's "defend when you're supposed to, attack when you're not"
>>
>>184332774
Way to ignore the main point.
NPCs can detect and disarm traps. Those are extra AI behaviors you don't often see in games. The fact that enemies avoid visible traps was just a sidenote.

As far as overall AI competency goes, the real flaws are different from what you think. >>184332585 mentioned using incapacitation at the end their of turn as a positive. That's a nice AI behavior for sure, but turn order is locked with no option to defer turns. So what happens if the flashbang guy goes first? The combat rules make AI group coordination pretty much impossible.
>>
>>184337865
For the AI there's no difference between a visible trap and any other kind of trap, so the distinction is meaningless. Disarming a trap isn't even complex enough to qualify as a behavior.
>>
>>184337865
>So what happens if the flashbang guy goes first?

Whoever goes next gets better THC and possibly a nice opportunist bonus. It's only really wasted if the next one is a psyker, and sometimes not even then.
>>
>>184338472
While that is true, the full effect (extra turn against player) is always wasted.

The point was that locked (and random) turn order prevents designing fair AI with advanced group coordination behaviors, unless the AI programmer is some sort of IQ180+ savant.
>>
>>184338472
That's a good point. Incapacitation reduces your dodge/evasion to 0, so it's going to hurt builds that rely on it regardless.

Also, now flashbangs daze you for 5 turns if you have night vision on. This alone is pretty crippling.
>>
>>184337865
>The combat rules make AI group coordination pretty much impossible.
Incapacitation is but one of many status effect enemies can inflict on you and pretty much the only one that suffers from this. A sledgehammer guy reducing your dodge/evasion to 0 for 2 turns is beneficial for the entire group regardless of turn order. Same can be said about crossbow lurker netting you for the cut-throat next to him.
>>
>>184337681
That's a boy in the cathoodie.
>>
>>184339027
That's true, but encounter design can and often does cover for the lack of group behavior. While turn order is random, huge differences in initiative still makes some outcomes more likely than others, so that allows some degree of predictability. Gear and feat distribution ditto. Maybe they don't have a behavior for it per se, but if in a group one can stun, and everyone else has opportunist, it achieves basically the same thing, the group as a whole profits from the behavior of one. If one has an EMP grenade, and a couple of men with firearms and energy guns, chances are the synergy is still going to do its job despite the AI.
>>
I noticed that the names of all the crossbow models in Underrail are wind-related. Similarly all SMG models are named after animals and 3 out of 4 (impala, jaguar, jackrabbit) live in Africa. I guess Steel Cat counts too but it's not specific. Pistols, assault rifles and sniper rifles don't seem to have any naming pattern.

Neat little thing. Wish it was the case for all weapons.
>>
>>184341028
>I noticed that the names of all the crossbow models in Underrail are wind-related.

It's actually kind of weird now that I think of it. Would people who spent generations living underground know what things like a tornado or hurricane are?

Today's pointless Underrail trivia answers the question; how many different mutagen puzzles can there be?

The answer is roughly 4 860 000 000 000 000 for every star in the observable universe, meaning you probably won't get the same puzzle twice!
>>
>>184354439
That's very useful to know, thanks. Am I correct in assuming that you are extremely bored?

>>184356125
More like extremely flabbergasted. I'm trying to figure out where the mutagen puzzle generator is hidden. All I've got is that it probably uses a 128-bit UUID as seed, hence the crazy number.

I've dug through the mutagen scanner and combinator code, but those just check properties of the mutagen canisters. I've no idea when/where the sequences are applied to them and trying to search the obfuscated binary for any kind of references to the items returns nothing.

Just beat the game with the long range assault rifle build.

Tchort fight was actually easier than I expected, even without doing the mutagen puzzle. AR range was just enough to destroy the 2 tanks on the left while standing right next to the safe room, those 2 on the right are easy enough to blow up with TNT. The eye itself lasted 3 turns, I could probably kill it one if I abused Ambush and the fact that the light level after throwing a grenade is set to max until the next turn.

Overall it was pretty good. Terrible early on because precision on ARs drops very quickly and critical damage without A-A scope Chimera+Critical Power is terrible. Once those things were in place however very few enemies were able to survive more than once crit, 2 tops. It was fun.

I fail to see some pattern here.

I made a mistake, the quest isn't bugged at all. I was supposed to be looking for a skeleton (that was in the white snow, so it can be easy to miss). The sword is right here, and I could finish the quest normally.

The devs are pretty cool about this kind of thing. Someone else was having an issue with a different quest, and the devs told him to send them his save so they could fix the issue themselves manually. I'm still glad I bought this game.

Minimaps are absolute cancer. They divert all of your attention from the in-game environment and retard your awareness.

Video Games are the mental equivalent of eating junk food.

Minimaps are functional in first-person games and usually provide increased awareness by showing data that is not available from your first-person viewpoint.

But having a minimap in an isometric game where maps are small enough to fit on your screen? That's just stupid.

Video games, like any other type of game, by definition include systems that require the player to make decisions. Decision making is a solid mental exercise.

You must be playing shitty games where decisions are either trivial or maybe even non-existent. cRPGs are all about optimization.

That data should be available from your first-person viewpoint. Implementing a minimap instead is just lazy design.

It's not the implementation that is a problem, minmaps are inherently cancerous. There is not a single game in existence that benefits from a minmap.

Purchasing a soda from a vending machine involves decision making but that doesn't make it a more mentally advancing activity than watching a stimulating movie. I'm not sure what's your point? First person view of field is limited to a cone in front of you while a minimap can serve a radar-like function, enhancing the player's awareness.

Whether this sort of radar minimap is an element in the game's UI or a gadget your character must wield is mostly an immersion factor. I have nothing against that type of first-person immersion but on the other hand overly and overtly minimalistic UIs tend to be a sign of consolitis. Which works better depends on the game.

Watching paint dry can be stimulating to some. I think I will stick with purchasing soda, you can go watch the paint.

Sorry to burst your bubble but "meaning" is wholly subjective and completly unrelated to how mentally demanding something is. Digging a hole is as braindead as it gets yet it can be of great use to the society while being the most educated man on earth is useless if you never do anything with said knowledge.

The point is that it's hardly enhancing your awarness, what it actually does is make you pay all of your attention instead of the in-game enviorement. Much like quest markers and such.

Hmm. That depends on the game and minimap implementation, doesn't it? In RPGs, quest markers (minimaps and maps as well) will diminish the player's familiarity with the gameworld. But I'd argue minimaps in FPS and other twitch-based games increase situational awareness.
>>
>>184453296
Simple, you would actually need to give a fuck what happens in the game world, not glue your eyes to the minimap. That said I admitminmap in RTS is not nearly as bad.

>>184454653
>But I'd argue minimaps in FPS and other twitch-based games increase situational awareness.
I wouldn't say it increases awarness. It gives the player more information, true, but focusing on the minmap means you can easily miss things that are not shown on it even if they are right next to you. It kinda puts in tunnel vision.

I think the introduction of W2C and JHP bullet blueprints was a mistake.

Special ammo used to be a good alternative to normal ammo since it was the only way to get some use out of spent casings, but now that those casings can be used to get more W2C/JHP there is very little reason to make special ammo. Bypassing 65% of DT/DR will be always superior vs. heavily armored enemies while 40% more DMG will be always superior against enemies with no DT/DR whatsoever. Not to mention they have very low chemistry requirements (15 for JHP, 20 for W2C) while special ammo types can reach as high as 60 chemistry or 20 electronics/biology on top of 15 chemistry.

Also putting a map of the DC would literally hurt the level.

>comparing Fallout 2 to Underrail
Fallout consists of multiple small locations that are not connected to each other and accessed via the world map.

Both the worldmap and the location-specific maps like the one in your pic are nothing more than fast-travel devices. If anything you should post the pipboy pixel map, but it was completly pointless and no one ever uses it.

Underrail on the other hand consist of an abundance of locations that are all connected to each other and make a bigger whole. Navigating them is a part of the game. Adding a map would completly trivialize navigating the caves without getting lost. Not to mention it takes precious development time which could be used for something more important.

>>184462462
I think you mean Drop Zone.

Except he is correct, Underrail does not need a map. Unless you completely lack a sense of direction you should have no trouble navigating it. And if you do, the game has trains and boats to every station.
>>
>>184464810
>Unless you completely lack a sense of direction you should have no trouble navigating it.
That's not entirely true. Getting lost in the caves is a part of the experience.

>tfw getting out after an hour of exploring the caves only to find yourself next to SGS
>>
>>184464987
The caves are not really large, after you know where each station is you shouldn't feel lost anymore. It only gets confusing if you forget to keep track of changing levels, like going down a hole, or walking up stairs and ladders. But if you stay on the same level the layout is easy to figure out.
>>
>>184465453
To be honest I can understand someone getting lost the first time around in say, Drop Zone or Upper Underrail. That's kind of the point though, not having a chance to get lost would make the exploring les exciting.

There's too much area transition zones per map, no way you can navigate it easily.
I understand you're afraid to be called casual, but this is gone too far.
>>
>>184465864
Yeah, I'm just saying that the layout is logical enough, and there are plenty of easy to remember landmarks, so after the initial exploration navigating should no longer be a problem. It's not that large that you'd need a map to remember where things are.
>>
>>184465453
Everyone got lost in the caves at one point or the other during their 1st playthrough. Which was fun.
>>
>>184466013
That's a terrible example, mate. Of course you can navigate that easily, because it takes about two minutes to realize that three of those lead to different corners of the same map, the two going north lead to maps next to each other, same for the two going west. So that's really only five directions, east, west, north, south, and down.

And if you just started the game, the game will not even allow you to get lost, because you will run into collapsed tunnels before you could get far.

Why is that one guy so buttblasted about map?

Underrail is really fun to explore without map because the areas have interesting interconnections and feel like natural spaces, unlike older dungeon crawlers with strictly tile-based puzzle mazes with teleport traps.
