My dream game consists of a Maplestory-like World-pathing system where you get from place to place, in a vanilla/alpha World of Warcraft-esque setting and skill system (think back when they were going to make the game more dark and edgy) with a Starbound/Terraria style deconstructable world that you could decorate, with factions of furry races like WoW's Alliance and Horde, all online.

Where do I start?

Why do you care about other people's financial situations? There are literally people who are rich just because they were born lucky.

Anyone know what's a good number of Steam wishlists/followers before launch? My game has 600 wishlists + 100 followers atm, releasing in 2 weeks. Would that be enough to recoup the Direct fees for a 10 bucks game?

It somewhat works now. A lovely, botched A* algorithm that I think will be better working for this monster type than a well-made one. I like them wandering around instead of going straight to the player.

Bug: The monsters still go through solid tiles sometimes. They used to do more, but I fixed that with a bandaid fix. I'm not entirely sure what's causing it now.

Also, the FPS drops ARE because of some chinks in the code this time, probably because of the bandaid. I'll have to look into it.

I need to sell at least 1750 copies at 5$ each to fund development for 1 year.

Assuming games take about 2-5 years to make, I'll need to sell 3500-8750 copies each game in order to live off of game dev.

>>
>>183886795
you're missing the point i was making when mentioning the year
these games have been around for a long while and made their way to bundles, which boosted their numbers while not making a whole lot of money, and discounts
there's also the fact that the indie landscape is changing and shifting, hurting the full-price sales even further
since you mentioned the median, here are some articles i found through quick google
http://www.pcgamer.com/median-game-sales-on-steam-are-down-dramatically-steamspy-says/
http://www.develop-online.net/news/average-indie-game-steam-sales-halve-year-on-year/0219745
these articles were written after 2015, so after most of >10k owners /agdg/ games made their debut. to save you the trouble of putting these through the archive, here are some quotes
16th april 2016
>Median indie games sales in April 2015 were 5,400 copies and they dropped to 2,800 in April 2016. But on the other hand the sales for #10 indie game in April 2015 were 104,000 copies and 102,000 in April 2016,” he tweeted. “So the tail become longer as more games get released on Steam, but if your game is one of the top indie titles, you're safe.
if you're the big fish, not much changed, but only like top 5 /agdg/ devs can call themselves that, with only hopoo really being around anymore. you're probably in the tail. the amount of competition you're dealing with increased, having a good game alone won't defend you

Monolith made some pretty big mistakes if their plan was to make money. It's too hard (cramped fast paced bullet hell levels with confusingly chaotic bullet patterns), so only a small niche will be able to enjoy it properly. The resolution is also shit, it looks neat as a retro aesthetic at first but it's like looking through a gameboy screen, you just don't see as much/clearly as you should.

Well i mean it's not like I haven't tried that.
I'd even say it's one of my biggest problems that I can't find actual communities filled with potential players instead of just people who merely take note of development details.

I have threads in several indiedev forums but how many people really read those?
You got like 10 original posters per thread, over a couple of boards.
Even if every second had a twitter account it wouldn't really help much.

In fact, you'd probably end up with exactly the amount of followers that I currently have.

>born lucky

Imo, this is a bad way of looking at life. You being born isn't some random act, you are part of a line that existed countless thousands of years before you. If you are born rich, it means your line was very successful for whatever reason.

When you think that you just randomly were born to your parents and that you could have just as easily been born a crab or a flea, you're ignoring that your birth was a deliberate action on the part of your parents. You're just looking at your birth from your perspective, not the perspective of those that gave life to you.

did you have a close look a this part. this part is key.

// perform collision detection & response, on each axis, separately
// if the koala is moving right, check the tiles to the right of it's
// right bounding box edge, otherwise check the ones to the left
Rectangle koalaRect = rectPool.obtain();
koalaRect.set(koala.position.x, koala.position.y, Koala.WIDTH, Koala.HEIGHT);
int startX, startY, endX, endY;
if (koala.velocity.x > 0) {
startX = endX = (int)(koala.position.x + Koala.WIDTH + koala.velocity.x);
} else {
startX = endX = (int)(koala.position.x + koala.velocity.x);
}
startY = (int)(koala.position.y);
endY = (int)(koala.position.y + Koala.HEIGHT);
getTiles(startX, startY, endX, endY, tiles);
koalaRect.x += koala.velocity.x;
for (Rectangle tile : tiles) {
if (koalaRect.overlaps(tile)) {
koala.velocity.x = 0;
break;
}
}
koalaRect.x = koala.position.x;

that's for the x movement, you do the same with the y. i'm too tired to explain it to you tonight but key to pixel perfect collision is the for loop, look it up. study it and how it's applied here.

What language? Just as general advice you should look into data structures like quadtrees, bounding volume hierarchies and other tree structures for accelerating stuff like collision detection or other kinds of spatially hashed queries. For physics there's a good book called Morgan Kaufmann: Real Time Collision Detection.

Avoid string vs string comparisons, use enums or numerical IDs wherever possible. Use maps (binary trees) when you have a large number of objects to search.

I was aware of this. Yeah, python isn't great for large projects. I'm probably going to end up porting everything over to C++, but I want to have all my data structures and program flow set in stone before that. I haven't done any programming for a few years, getting back into the pool by dipping my toes into the shallow-end that is python hasn't been bad for me either.

Also I'd like to have an example of what the final product will look like if I decide to try to get people to invest in it/work on it with me.

Trying to merge all of my map's textures into a single atlas (see left) so that I do less texture binding at rendering time. Haven't adjusted the texture coordinates yet, which is why the map looks off.

It would be nice if I could also merge lightmaps, but their final sizes may be too large to store in a single texture. It would be a nice win though, since then I could draw the map in a single call.

>>183918760
It won't be implemented as a literal state machine. I'm gonna have a function to set all variables to be appropriate for each state instead of trying to keep track of them manually in every event that can change state. It should make it pretty straightforward both to add new states and to allow states to modify more variables.
>>
>>183918783

I assume you can't collect from Patreon without giving them your real identity, and I assume you can only pay them via well-regulated channels that also need your real identity.

If you want to launder money, you need to use Bitcoin for all your illicit transactions. It's possible to near-completely erase the paper trail. You could also use Monero, which is truly anonymous, but the price on that is riskier.

I don't think you understand how Patreon works. It's not about what you need, it's about what your supporters are willing to give you. Usually, there are perks for donating more than a few bucks, like exclusive streams or early access to content. That makes it essentially a standard market system.

There would be a clear paper trail from the illegal source to the patreon accounts, given that patreon has to keep accounts of all of that. Plus you have to set up multiple burner facebook accounts and paypals, which would also both leave a paper trail.
Its easier just to use bitcoin these days.

I know how it works, I just figured people would stop at a point or there'd be a natural limit to a text based game that was lower than 30K. What I don't know is what he offers (or that he'd even be willing to considering he didn't use to) that enough people can get him to that amount and how he can even keep that much interest

Like something has had to change with the guy, I just assumed it was e-begging since that was what he used to drive home

history repeats itself.
After I finished Alex Allains jumping into C++ i realized I still don't know anything about C++, only after reading through stroustrups book I felt comfortable moving to the QT framework I needed to master for a project.

Now I red through a 250 sfml game development book and again realized I don't know anything about game programming. So I picked up the "SFML programming by example" which is a 550 page read and it explains stuff in so much more detail that I came after I downloaded the pdf off some russian site.
I'm tired of this though. Maybe I should have just used gamemaker.

Blender has been having some very bad days. It met the love of its life, and before it had time to catch its breath, it was shot down. Blender cried, really poured its tears out, for the first time in years. It wandered around in a stupor, vulnerable, alone, going through the motions, distracted by thoughts of how its dreams were crushed. It rendered a lot of scenes wrong and had to do them over. People got upset with it. People it thought it could trust. They said vicious, hurtful things about its user interface, just when it was feeling good about the effort it invested in getting into shape.

But then Blender took a good look at how far it's come. It got over its stupid obsession with making all of its button panels perfectly square. It improved its menu system to make its most useful tools and shortcuts more discoverable, and added new capabilities to the tools it already had. It quit drinking. It added a visual programming language for working with shaders. And you have to admit it looks pretty sharp in its new suit.

It knows it can never revisit what it experienced, but the emptiness doesn't hurt anymore. It knows that its commercial competitors, like Zbrush, can do things that are just beyond it. But that's all okay. It's comfortable with itself in a way it hasn't been for a long time. It has a place in the world, and at long last, it's found some closure.

You know what, anon? I think Blender's going to be just fine.

If it's in 3D as in space/air battles, you need to define what right and left means to the object. You could do that by:

right = forward x up
left = up x forward

Where up and forward are your object vectors.

After that it's just target - right.

What vector, exactly? The vector that represents the line from the right side of the ship to an arbitrary point on the enemy ship? The rotation vector that represents the right side of the ship already lined up with an arbitrary point on the enemy ship? The unit vector that represents the "right side" of your ship?

Cool, glad it worked out for you. I'm not sure if traces in unity return the type of the surface, but you can make your cover geometry have some tag and only snap into cover geo that allows it.

Also you might want to check for movement inputs to see if the player wants to snap into cover, because ther's nothing worse than a character that just always tries to do it's own thing.

If you don't make any changes (that is, all the boxes are grayed out), there is still post processing going on. To get the raw outputs from the shaders you have to manually change every setting in the PPVolume.

Snapping to cover is planned to be entirely in the player's control; unless the player is holding the dodge button next to cover or moving towards cover, they will move freely and they leave cover as soon as the button is released. Thanks for the reminder though, I'll try and make sure it feels good. Cover is meant to be one of many options players have available to them, so responsively exiting cover is a high priority.

is much easier to become good at one skill than 1MA.

is easier to make a living of just one skill than 1MA.

1MA is a delusion.

It takes years to make a good game by yourself, while it would take months using a small team of diferent specialist.

you wont be able to have the same skills at some guy who spend all his time and effort at getting gud in just one skill.

>but I'm good
Is impossible, It takes years to be good at just one skill.
It takes at least 5 years (an entire bachelor) to be good at one skill, focusing it all your time.

It's not possible to put the same effort in five diferent things at the same time than focusing in just one skill.

I haven't seen a single guy being able to do it, not in agdg nor in the industry.

>but stardew valley, minecraft
which are pretty mediocre and average for what a team of professionals could do.

Face the reality, you wont be able to make something more complex than what a team of skilled specialist will do.

You could be a good programmer, but your art will be average.
You could be a good artist, but your code will be unoptimized unity trash.

What if you give up and stop caring about games?

I not longer play games at this point, and most guys in the industry hate to play games.

There wont be a plan B if you fail.

Nobody will give you a job, you have no college degree and shit tier mediocre skills.

>but my game will make millions
which is risky and on average you will make less than flipping burgers.

Even a high quality game you spend five years to make like monolith made less than googum games.

What actual reason you have your game idea will sell millions like minecraft?

Sorry kid, but making games is a risky game where you slave for years into your dream game only to sell it for 5-7USD just to be it completelly ignored at worst or simply making a few millions at best if you're extremelly lucky (like top 1% of games).

On average your dream game, let's be realistic, will lose you money, if you take into account development time and account for things like rent, food, gas.

Sorry kid, I'm just becoming a bitter old man.
But I do hope you don't make the same mistake I did.

Not me. I plan on creating trash that fails commercially. Then in roughly 2040, the latest generation of dumbass retrofags will find it and shitpost about it being amazing for years on /vr/.

how much of a difference does it make if I use opengl 3.2 vs when they overhauled it?

I haven't seen a single 1MA with better skills than mediocrity.

>but blow
blow isn't a 1MA

>but pixel
pixel is mediocre in everything.

>but Hopoo
hopoo is mediocre as well.

>but Notch
notch is a mediocre java programmer, has not other skill.

>but toady
he can only code.

>but kontaj
his only non mediocre skill is pixel art, which he can only make indie pixel art, worse than what we saw in a SNES game.

>but ZUN
zun is extremelly mediocre.

>but derek yu
mediocre as well.
>>
>>183940324
We can only hope.
>>
I guess it's okay to make games if you do it for fun, which is why I like jams. Even notch only made minecraft for fun (at first)

a small team of 3-4 developers will make shit of quality a single guy wont be able to make.

is just common sense.

FFVI was made by less than 6 guys on one year.

I've got a wife and kids man. My job as an alpha is done, and I'm by no means miserable. I just think the powers that be need to reel in the internet a bit. It was neat when it first arrived, the degeneracy could only be delivered at such a pace. I'm curious, did you ever know life without the internet?

Making games for fun is the only reason anyone should do it. Making money with gamedev is like the lottery except instead of just rolling the dice you have to first have enough skill to create an entire game and then roll the dice.
