I could see how people find Ryoma boring, he suffers from the whole everyone in Hoshido is perfect syndrome kinda. He has some nice bits though, his support with Felicia is amusing, feeding him bad food is funny since he throws a fit, his relationship with Shiro is an interesting dynamic, his and Xanders support shows a good deal of growth between them, oldly his dlc map lines hold some nice character bits for him. Alm probably, he's going to be doing most of the work until Acts 3 and 4. Most of the others can get by on multiple promotion bonuses if they fuck up, Alm gets a single promotion and it's late enough that you want him at level 20 before doing it if possible, even if it means less or no bonuses due to the way promotions in SoV work. Most of Alm's better units come later, though all the villagers can be useful if you wait a bit before reclassing them into an actual class.

The merc line should promote ASAP though since they can go back to Villager from one of their final classes if need be since that was a feature in Gaiden for them. Character bases are fitted to classes(rather than classes shifting around character bases), so the only thing you lose from doing that(or using one of the DLC forks) is movement and spell lists(unless going back to a spellcasting class).
