I'm playing my first game as a count (which is a very different experience but I love it a lot) and things have turned interesting. As the count of Krain, I started out as part of Bavaria (Charlemagne start). I screwed myself over slightly when there was a civil war and I chose to remain neutral and the new ruler gave me more taxes. I turned to Charlemagne and made him my best friend - even entered a few wars for him - but I didn't get any land when he annexed Bavaria. Things seemed stable for a moment - but not for long. I'm not sure whether it was the war with the Saxons or the following rebellion, or something completely different, but the empire started collapsing. More and more vassals started leaving and rebellions started popping up. As a good vassal, I helped put them down, until I saw a new enemy bubble show up.
Apparently some guy declared himself the king of Norway and he attacked our empire - for Bavaria. And instead of landing anywhere between Navarra and Denmark, he chose - Krain. Needless to say, many women (luckily no relatives) were taken as concubines and the province was pillaged. Bavaria came under Norse rule and I was just waiting for news that I was going to be replaced.
Still, Norway was attacked, first by a Chalcedonian rebel, then the Franks and then Ferrara who wanted Carinthia as part of a holy war. At this point, I decided I would try and fight for my independence. Due to marriage ties, I was able to get Lombard support (the Lombards had expanded into Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia and even conquering Avar lands) and win the war.

Anyway, now I'm wondering - shoudl I remain independent or would it be better for me to swear fealty to the king of Lombardy?
I've also thought about Byzantium since I have managed to get a relative of mine in the position of a strategos down south in Italy.

Alright, after getting no answers to >>183666890, I thought I might as well stay independent for a while. Needless to say, the three wars I had to go through convinced me otherwise. But it turns out I have a claim on Lombardy which I completely forgot about and I was approached by a duke who is now forming a faction to take the throne for me. The current king is of Lombardy is a kid and nobody seems to like him so I might actually get it. Or the guy who I let gather volunteers in my county ages ago might take it from him (or me). Also, my cat died and I made a ceremony to say goodbye.

As it turns out, my family didn't take root only in Italy (I checked again, my relative is a Komes there, not a Strategos) but somehow, another one of my relatives managed to take over the French throne. France isn't doing so bad, they took a few counties in Bavaria from Norway; the king of the latter converted to Christianity not too long ago but he got excommunicated. Not that I mind.

African charter regions usually cost about 8 dip to culture convert and gives you that good feeling of genociding niggers so that white men can transport more slaves from the interior.

Always convert before you assign to a Company. Once converted you can then give it to the Corporation and then culture convert. It won't net you much at all except some RP feels.
