I've managed to get WW2 to last until almost 1965 in HoI4 with no end in sight
The only 3 countries with a manpower greater than 0 at this point are New Zealand(1.9k with scraping the barrel), the USA(with 1.5M left on scraping the barrel), and Australia(20k with scraping the Barrel)
The only countries left in the fight are Britain and France and Australia for the Allies, New Zealand and Communist America for the Comintern, and Japan all by itself for the Axis
It's like watching the apocalypse, pretty much every nation on earth has sent their entire male population over 13 to fight, and tens of millions are dead in military losses alone.

Also RIP the HMS Ark Royal, it somehow survived all the way from 1936-1964

A crisis has arisen in which Italy and Russia are demanding from Austria that Poland is released. Preparations have begun fortifying my army along Italy's border before the war begins. Hopefully they back down as I don't really like my odds, but just in case it's better to be prepared.

New to CK2, this is only my second game. Started as the duke of Alemanina and worked my way up from there. I went Fraticelli with my first guy which seemed like a good idea at the time. I just took Rome and the Fraticelli Pope calls for a crusade for Jerusalem, but unfortunately I'm the only Fraticelli country so I've just kind of let him have a staring match with the emperor of Abassid for the last decade. Meanwhile the growing slavic menace lurks in Eastern Europe

I can't help but think maybe I should have stayed Catholic. Maybe that would give me a better chance at long term survival because right now things are looking grim. Is it salvageable?

Man, France really is trash. They declared war on Italy along with Russia and I, and despite Russia tying up about a 3rd of their army on the eastern front they still managed to take a third of France before we started pushing them back. Bear in mind I only had 80 brigades in this war, but I think we still underperformed. France REALLY needs to get it together though. I'll stay allies with them though because they do have some ability, and they are very convenient to fight with being right beside me.
Decided to add a cut down to size CB just to say fuck you for making me lose the first great war and fall to revolution.

My second game in CK2. I am doing overall well, though my vassals are pissed at me, probably mostly because I was holding too many counties for too long waiting for them to vote for centralisation.
But then I noticed something else when I checked the detailed info for my relationships with people. I get a huge negative for holding "too many duchies". What is considered too many? And what are the positives of holding them and giving them to people? Are there even any duchy titles I would want to have?

It's been so long since I've played vanilla I forget what the actual modifiers are, but I believe it's vanilla that your capital duchy (IE the duchy with your capital province in it) gets increased demesne levies, so you want to keep (and ideally mostly control) the duchy with your primary capital in it.

Other than that, I don't think they really do much more than give you passive prestige and ensure that another powerful vassal doesn't rise up in the regions where you control them, both of which, however, are good for you. But you want to do your best to make sure you don't control duchies in territories where you have a lot of counts (IE don't hold the ducal title for a duchy which has 4 counts and only one province you control) because they'll all gain a -25 modifier for wanting the county. And if you give the duchy away but keep the provinces you have in it, the new duke will get -25 modifiers for every province in the duchy which you control but he does not.

So basically fully control the duchy with your capital in it if possible, and hold one other duchy, preferably close to your capital duchy, which you mostly control all the counties for. All other duchies should be given away.

Also, keep in mind that in Elective (not Elective Gavelkind, but Elective) you CAN'T hold two duchies which are both part of your de jure title. So for example if you're playing France and your succession is elective, you can't be the Duke of Orleans and the Duke of Anjou, because both those titles are de jure part of France, but you COULD be the Duke of Orleans and the Duke of Navarra, provided the latter hadn't drifted into your primary title, because Navarra isn't de jure part of France. Basically, elective monarchies have a one duchy limit within their de jure territory.

One last thing: special religious duchies (patriarchates, caliphates, the fylkirate) don't count towards the duchy limit.
