Xander is a tank, and to that end he does a pretty damn good job. I have almost never seen any bow or dagger scratch him. He fears no axe user, he can exchange with most swords, and he's even stood up to a few lance users. A shame about mages though, but you can't win 'em all.

Eldigan on the other hand, while he has similar stats, he can also have stat variants, and his weapon speeds up the Special charge rather than give DC, allowing him to take advantage of higher charge Specials like Ignis.

If that's a 4 HP heal kinda like a reverse Spring Egg, then that's actually really solid if you think about it. Eliwood isn't necessarily better than Xander-- they play completely different roles.

It never was, people just never really used Elliwood since he required 20K feathers and doesn't have DC on his weapon.

Being fair, Xander also requires 20K feathers, but by the time he came onto the scene he was one of the very few users with DC built-in to his weapon, that made the 20K cost easier to swallow. Not even counting the fact most people were sitting on feathers to begin with, and ISIS has been getting more generous with them as time goes by.
