Cleaned up the wallrun a bit and put the animation for the other direction.

Going to work on making vaulting presentable and mayb e start looking into redoing the animations.

This is such an important step and one of the hardest at the same time (and not because i can't animate), because i'll have to lock down the pepsi-man design and make a proper rig for it and clean uvs nad materials.

Foray into materials in UE was fruitless, but at least i think i can remove some load and maybe use some cool effect on the lo-fi graphics i'm shooting for, now if only i could make any opf those material tutorials actually work.

I updated my Game Resources folder with a bunch of stuff, namely 2D-related stuff like tutorials and spritesheets, more animation reference and some new audio resources (sound effects). Also reorganized some folders.
I'm still uploading new pictures and shit (currently 3379 of 10239) so check back tomorrow to see the complete update.

That said, there's still a lot of garbage to weed out, and I wish someone would help me with that. I'm trying to create a comprehensive resource collection for agdg.

take old puzzle game and make that the minigame. something like Solomon's key would be fun. or find something really obscure. then everyone will think you're so original. avoid ones where it involves the player guessing, like a minesweeper type thing, or waiting, like the first deus ex. that shit is boring and involves no skill, and if you have to do it a lot that 's offputting. if you have to do it a small number of times that just makes it pointless.

Each time I'm reading or earing this, I want to punch someone.

Yeah, sure. Having to put aside my own life, any posibility of having a career, a relationship, and everything else in general, because I must take care everyday of two heavily sick family members of mine, while having almost virtually no income and no way to get a job because I'm living in bumfuck nowhere, is being fucking goddamn privileged. I just started transitioning from Unity to Unreal. It took me 3 days of trying to fix basic issues to find out that Visual Studio's intellisense is fucked for Unreal and C++ and half the errors you need to just ignore
So far Unreal feels a bit better than Unity so far, although I never did more than scrap the surface of it anyway

This is the cursed path. Countless times in the years I've been in gamedev I have seen Gamemaker users completely frustrated with GM, and always this notion of "I wish I had started with a real programming language, this shit would be so much easier"

I've played through X through X7.
X7 is slow, boring, ugly, badly voiced, poorly controlled, and sometimes even fairly broken.
I could at the very least fix the controls out of the above. Not sure about the others.

They completely lost their minds with the transition to 3D. It had none of the speed, tightness, or even decent progress that the other X games had.
I'm specifically going to be trying to avoid most of the shit it did, so I guess that's a form of taking inspiration.

meme graphics and music with a trippy story at the right time when the indie audience was hungry for that specific mix. The unique visuals are almost entirely its selling point, especially since reviews and LPs sell games now
good music will definitely help your game, but it'll never be the main selling point. You need to find your audience and especially find what they like to see. As in literally see. HM appealed to the """indie game""" crowd because it's obnoxiously retro, Undertale appealed to tumblr because its format allowed for people to experience its story entirely through LP and then appealed to everyone else because the gameplay is actually fun

Well, the good news is that seems to be working.

The original character was a boy. I changed up some bits of the hair and the chest to make it more ambiguous.
Not sure if I'll give it a definite gender or just leave it gender ambiguous.
Pic related was the original character from the game project I'm basing my new project off of. It was a shitty college project from 4 years ago that never really got anywhere.

Gameplay that facilitates addiction. Game constantly leaves you feeling like you could have won if you had just been a little bit faster and the levels are so short that you just keep retrying until you get it.

At least at first. The later levels (and Hotline Miami 2) have a lot of bullshit that feels unfair.

I want to stop a revolver from firing until it finishes its cocking animation.
The most obvious way to do this is to have the anim blueprint tell the revolver blueprint when it can fire by setting a bool inside the revolver blueprint.

However, this seems like bad practice since it makes the functionality of the revolver heavily dependent on the anim blueprint. Is there a better way to do this that I'm not seeing?

Not a single one of those has anything to do with monopolies, which is what "anti-trust" laws fight.
Gambling isn't even anti-consumer.

Steam is not a monopoly and does not violate any anti-trust laws. Steam not allowing links to your Patreon is not anti-consumer and does not make them a monopoly. Steam offering you a way to give your users itch keys is not anti-consumer or monopolistic.

Steam is not a monopoly, Steam has to account for taxes and other additional costs in different markets and Steam is not conditioning you to buy rights to their service in order to get to the games they're providing. Having to purchase Windows to use MS Office is a more relevant example of tying.

Unless you can point to cases where legal action has been taken against Steam on these grounds, I, much like the other anon, are going to disregard your claims on these topics.

removing access to key distribution in favor of "authorization" through their platform is objectively an attempt at tying. it pushes themselves into a middleman position for other storefronts which itself can be viewed as exclusive dealing, all of which are attempts at monopolization.
you also need to keep in mind that the legal system is not the 10 commandments handed down perfectly from god, if none of this stuff 100% fits the legal definition... if someone finds a new way to create an anti-competitive monopoly position, it's the duty of law to catch up and fix it to protect the fairness of the market.

just saying, entrepreneurs actual focus on pushing the boundaries and new laws emerge because of that sometimes, or not, but its not necessarily a bad thing. Just look at the taxis and Uber, clearly Uber fucked them good but there was no law in place to stop that, so the taxis could whine all they want, a new system was simply created.
>>
Hey gogem, Im confused and trying to wrap my head around what you exactly you were trying to achieve. Would it have been possible to sell your game for, say $1 on itch and provide a steam key, even though your price tag on steam was $200 or whatever? Or does steam take a cut from whatever the agreed value is on each key based on the steam price? Im really confused.

Your justification for redefining what tying is or what it means to middleman services like Steam seems absurdly haphazard. Keep in mind, it'd also affect other services, not just what Valve has been doing.

I am more convinced they deprecated the feature you are asking for because of people like you, because of the additioal overhead it'd have caused.

Progress on remastering Generic Zombie Shooter. Most of my progress has been in the background, but I intend to start focusing on actual tangible gameplay. Art assets won't be changed from the originals until much later in the project.

uber is going to get it, dont you worry about that.
and it isnt about them outcompeting taxis, it's about the way they treat their drivers and skirt laws invented for the profession.
taxi companies could easily become more competitive against uber, they just have to break a bunch of labor laws and consumer laws.

just saying, usually the game stays available. >non-EU businesses have to pay VAT on sales to EU residents
>exactly what they pay depends on the particular country each customer lives in
Why do Europeans cry that game companies mark up games in the EU instead of crying that taxes are too high? You have to mark your game up 40% to cover it after accounting for Steam's take of the increased gross, and that's not enough if you use Unreal and have to pay a royalty to Epic.

American price:
>$10 * (1 - 0.3 (Steam's cut) - 0.05 (Epic's cut)) = $6.50
European price:
>14 * (1 - 0.3 (Steam's cut) - 0.05 (Epic's cut) - 0.20 (The Queen's cut)) = $6.30
You get even less from customers in Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, or any other country with a higher VAT than the UK.

Then you have to pay Uncle Sam.

Huh. That's not how I thought it would work. I thought VAT would be applied before all the other steps, e.g.

>UK game list price is GBP equivalent of $10*1.2 = $12
>$2 goes to UK govt as VAT, leaving $10
>steam takes 30% of that $10, leaving $7

>>

>>
>>183457858
VAT is taken from the gross, and Epic charges by gross. I don't know Steam's exact policy but I assumed it was by gross as well.
>>
>>183456936
Seems like this is much more a moral issue rather than a legal one. Just to clarify; if you chose to, you could have sold your game on itch, provided itch users steam keys for free, and let your userbase on steam continue to access a game they paid for, but you decided to take a moral highground and remove the game from steam rather than simply not use the service for any future publications? I'm failing to see how this is Steams fault tbqh. You could have just left it there and not used them again.
>>183457251
This might actually be a real legal issue in some parts of the world (eg distributor no longer has rights and continues to distribute), but here in Oz the definition of “goods” was extended when the Australian Consumer Law was enacted on 1 January 2011 to include “computer software", so steam actually may have a legal obligation to continue this distribution in lieu of no longer maintaining the right of sale. The whole thing is murky as fuck thqh, glad I'm not the one going through it.

youve got this completely backwards.
i do sell the game on itchio.
and also was selling on steam.
i have a personal moral issue with steam being absolute shit so ive removed all of my products from steam.
steam however would not allow me to provide alternative storefront ownership for their purchasers.
meanwhile on itchio i can easily and automatically do either of those things (remove games, provide keys to other stores) with no need to request for approval to do so.

legally it may not meet the current standards, doesnt mean it wont be brought up legally especially given the nebulous nature of digital ownership and what does or doesnt constitute market standards for digital products.
that is to say they were provided a pro-consumer option to resolve an issue and they decided on the opposite.

No you don't, you "protested" achievements by making a scam one and you are "protesting" steam for not letting you link to patreon by freaking out. You never cared this much about steam being "absolute shit" before, you would just complain about them through the side of your mouth while posting boast pics of mediocre steam storefront sales.
>>
>>183458716
You seem to be the one misunderstanding. Entities are in no way legally obligated to provide access to goods or services through competing entities. This is really basic shit. Steam does not, by any legal means, have to "provide alternative storefront ownership" for goods or services purchased through their platform. Have you ever worked in or ran a business of any kind? im describing the actual thing they do as an alternative to key distribution.
...there are no keys involved, it's an "authorization" system where you're supposed to give steam users access to other stores via steam. it's fucking retarded and convoluted and i dont think it would even work on itchio.
it also doesnt stop the problem of steam having control of the consumer, if they ban someone on steam they dont have access to their steam products, including products steam is providing authorization access to.

just because something isn't specifically legally obligated to doesn't mean it isn't anti-competitive and/or anti-consumer in nature.

However, he was so rude in emails that I wouldn't be surprised if he's already persona non grata.

No, he just has no idea what the fuck he is talking about. His views are moral/idealistic more than having any legal grounds. He's just got his head too far up his ass to see anything from any perspective other than his own. He should really seek legal counsel though, more to protect himself from the innocent consumers that may come after him if they potentially lose access to a product they have rightfully paid for in good faith. This issue will vary from country to country mind you, but he has more to worry about from the customers he has potentially burnt rather than steam themselves.

If you consider the mind bendingly greedy way you think even before the patreon era (which so far is your most destructive), you would have the storefront dancing on strings in all kinds of grotesque ways, which is why steam is probably even more happy that they don't just hand you the keys and let you throw tantrums in the aisle of their store because your bottle of gogem's special sauce (piss and salt), doesn't sell well.

The reason they made you struggle to leave is because they enjoyed watching you flop around like a fish, they knew that's how you go about everything. You're a hassle. A cunt. A bother. A faildev.

steam pushes free keys like drug dealers push free samples of crack.
you need marketshare to become a monopoly.
take for example the arab oil cartel OPEC who recently upped production to force down global prices in attempt to force the new international competition (other countries fracking projects) out of the market.

only in the present, allowing your users who were not there for steam keys to be sucked into the grinder of steam is losing future purchases when they've become addicted to steam's gamifications.
steam is currently making money on both ends (developer and consumer) if things keep being allowed to go the way they're going it wont be long before they've come up with a way to charge alternative stores for their interactions with steam or somehow folded them into their business, from what i understand Origin is already becoming this.

you can't do that online, it's literally impossible when anyone with a paypal and a game can email you their game when you paypal them the money.
the key for steam to monopolize in this context is not to have a mere storefront but to have a social network/addiction generator so they can command marketshare and force all developers and stores to operate through them.

how the fuck should I know why they do it
I'm positive it's not to drive their competitors out of business, though, because any retard can see it has the opposite effect and does, in fact, make Humble and itch more attractive to Steam users.

>you can't do that online, it's literally impossible when anyone with a paypal and a game can email you their game when you paypal them the money.
If you actually think this counts as competition then I don't know what to tell you. If this could compete with Steam or even itch then everyone would do it. It's not practical on any kind of meaningful scale and it foregoes all the benefits of a storefront, like processing VAT for you or showing your game to millions of eyes every day.

>the key for steam to monopolize in this context is not to have a mere storefront but to have a social network/addiction generator so they can command marketshare and force all developers and stores to operate through them.
And yet instead of trying to drive competing storefronts out of business, they have enabled them to compete effectively by providing them with free-of-charge Steam keys so that their lower prices can actually steal away customers who use Steam for the convenience of the app. Do you think Humble Bundles would be nearly as popular if they didn't provide Steam keys? Do you think AAA developers would ever even participate in them if they didn't use Steam for DRM? Do you think anyone would care about saving a dollar on itch if it didn't get them a Steam key?

Shovelware is generally a term used for games that're pushed out quick to turn profit or in a hope of having clueless people buy them for one reason or another.

Considering making a game that involves monster 'pets'. How hard would it be to program monsters randomly generated from combinations of a wide variety of different parts? Like 5 different potential heads one is randomly chosen to be 'pinned' to a skeleton that defines the monster animations? This would be in 2D and the animations would be very simple.

Would a particular engine be good for that?

You're losing motivation because of bad discipline memes. You need to get better ones.

For performance, in general you can code kinda poorly and just profile your game at the end. Fix up bad loops and whatnot. You shouldn't be wasting time fixing your game all along.

As for organization, books don't really teach that too much. You'll get better with experience though. I don't know how experienced you are, but you should make several shit games before you work on your Magnum Opus, otherwise you'll end up with a spaghetti mess that's hard to fix / make too big.

Current plan is a VR game where you solve 30 second to 3 minute long puzzles. I plan to basically build a bunch of parts I can put together to form puzzles.

Here you can see the incomplete "Grab a key off the pedestal and put it door lock to open it" and "Pick up the gun off the pedestal and shoot the target to open the door."

So far most of the game is
>Activate/Activatable world pieces
>Doors
>Targets that activate
>Key thats activate when placed into locks
>Switches that can be pulled to activate
>Climbing by grabbing bars and pulling yourself
And some other VR nonsense

Also have plans for
>Each hand has a color
>you can touch a 'colorizer' with your hand to color it that
>You can only interact with default items or items colored with that hand using your hand, that way you can only pick up certain items or grab onto certain things

I plan to have 2 level modes, "Teleporting" and "Walking" where the levels are designed for teleporting if you get motion sickness, and the walking ones if you don't.
Each level will be really short.

Goal is a game where you can grind through a bunch of levels if you want to by yourself giving you your gameplay. Timers and maybe side objectives to spice it up.
Or you can pass the VR headset around and let people try out the levels without any one person needing to spend a massive amount of time when trying it.

Current progress lol never ever but maybe. I know there's not much profit in a game like that, but if I can produce it fast enough I could start on a different VR game. I wanna make a shitty cockpit fighter game.
I also plan to use default shapes for everything because fuck you.

``Lolicon'' isn't some disease that needs to be cured. Lolicon is simply another form the human body has evolved to. You see it all the time in animals. Creatures that live in certain environments have adapted different specific traits unique to that environment. An that is simply whats happening to humans. The human body is adapting to our surroundings. It isn't bad, it's just evolution. We need to stop fearing change, and learn to accept it.

OK, so you want to make a game of deep lore? First think of a game, it doesn't need to have a deep lore, but it needs some kind of story and characters. Then instead of making this game you make a sequel to this game that's heavily tied into the events and characters of the first one that never got made. There, insta deep lore.
