Hellcrawl is pretty lit, it actually makes playing crawl exciting and suspenseful as opposed to the complete and utter snoozefest that vanilla crawl is.

What's different between Hellcrawl and regular Crawl? I've only played vanilla 0.20 Crawl.
>>
>>183403787
yeah I played it too the other day and I really love that streamlined experience
>>
>>183404160
How's it streamlined? I just learned the manual skill allocation tech, and it's pretty tedious and annoying to do, usually.

<Coolthulhu>build of the game with fixed aiming math: https://github.com/Coolthulhu/Cataclysm-DDA/releases/download/untagged-d20f3c06e42c10ee13f7/cataclysmdda-0.C.zip

stairs are basically hatches, once you're on a floor you can't go back up. This punishes you pretty heavily for sloppy play, and makes bad encounters pretty interesting to play out since you can't just retreat to a staircase and stairdance for eternity anymore.

No lair or orc, dungeon goes to 15 where you can choose between orc, vaults, or depths which all contain certain rune branches and all link between each other. And, the magic background spells got changed quite heavily, especially AE.
>>

Can I get a download link or link to all the changes it's made from the main branch?

all the changes are in the first post of this thread IIRC
https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=21527

It's playable on the berotato and project357 servers(CBRO and CPO) but it does have a github page.

Also, on another note, I've never had this mutation before. I guess a free +10 AC is nice on top of the +4 AC I already have. Now my defence are looking pretty nice for ring mail.

Now that's a get and a half. Anyway, I came across this pack of enemies. Right off the bat I can tell enemy spawns and dungeon generation seem very different, and the lack of identifying and hunger is much appreciated. Both were features I'm happy were kept out of this fork.

Can you also fix the thing with enemies being able to lock into your position after using teleport?
>>
>>183417827
I guess a quick fix could be that teleporting causes all monsters to forget the player (unless you teleport to another position within their FOV).
>>
>>183414782
It's yarrable. i'm going to give it a spin when I'm done with cdda again.
>>
>>183418336
Can I get a quick rundown of it? The minion system seems good from the one screenshot I saw.
>>
>>183418254
Yeah, or even having them remain in the alert state for X amount of turns if it's doable (so that they would be incapable of knowing your position, but would not immediately regress to blue-background mode)
>>
>>183418541
The problem with that is that the AI is really simplistic - if they are "aware", they know where you are, and will try to move to you.

Although when I think about it - this should just be a matter of adding another state:
"aware, but not allowed to use pathfinding to reach the player".
>>
>>183419217
No I mean, you know when they become "wary"? They could get into that state without knowing where you are right?
Or, if ti's not very big deal, adding that other state would be ebst indeed.
>>
>>183419701
I see. I did think you meant the "wary" state first, but in that state they still have blue background, so then I assumed you meant "more aware than that".

I'll probably just set them to the "wary" state for 19.1, and look into adding more states later.

what's the best ghostbuster combo in crawl, now that dispel undead is gone?
I've left one too many minotaur fighters in the dungeon and I'd really like to get rid of them while soaking up the delicious free XP.
Berserkers work well, but I don't really want to produce even more gozu meelee ghosts.

>>

Winnable in a strict mathematical sense: no
Probably winnable if you've been grinding a single dungeon generation seed in order to do it opimally: yes
Reasonably winnable on your first try of that particular seed with a player who has gotten experience running other seeds: no

I have never finished it. I played it back in the day on Amiga, I don't remember which version it was but that was before it started to require a HD. I'm old. And I think I got back to astral planes at some point but that was it. Later on I've played it for years and years now and then but I have gradually lost the feeling how it felt to play the game and be IN there. I haven't read any spoilers to be honest. So I have never done it. I suck as roguelike player though. But the most I enjoyed NH was during Amiga days when it was still bit mysterious.

I don't even know how much stuff they have added since it feels like not that much. I think it was version 2.8 or 3.0 but I'm not sure. I have lost the loving feeling towards games as I got old. [/end blog]

I've been trying to wrap my head around NH since getting it on some shovelware disc when I was a child, but I barely knew that you could even go down stairs.

I don't have enough fruit to set up oklob zones on every floor, and the spore ability requires enemies to already be dead.

You still gotta have your own character being capable of killing, of course. The spore ability can ravage the lair branches with ease, for example. Oklobs should be for special occasions, I'd figure.

The typical process of adding something to CDDA goes like this:
>I want something
>it sounds fun to me
>let's add it the simplest way possible
Notably absent in changes from most authors are:
>it should make gameplay more like x and less like y
>if the player does z, the gameplay will go more w
This is why mugling's aiming is so much better than Kevin's and why you should play the build linked in the thread instead of official ones. Mugling actually put thought into gameplay with that one change.

Here's the PR:
https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/14322
tl;dr It doesn't really have anything about night raiding in it, at least from author

Managing hunger in Brogue may not be tedious, but it's still a massive pain in the ass to starve to death because you missed one mango behind a secret door, then took five hundred extra turns to solve the issue of an OOD monster guarding the stairs.

The only time I ever had an issue with hunger in dcss was as a SpGl who got zapped by a polywand-toting gnoll on D:6 and picked up berserking. And the dungeon had no food shops and not much actual food. Even then, it was manageable after a long run through the abyss.

It's still a turd of a mechanic and entirely pointless in crawl, which is why I usually play spriggans. IA is the only game I can think of that does it right.

>>
>>183497943
Spell hunger reduction is spellcasting * int so a high-int, high-spellcasting race like Spriggan has zero problems. The annoying thing about Spriggan casters is the low conjurations aptitude but it's not enough to make them weak.

Hungry ghosts inflict torment-like damage to your hunger bar so they're remarkably bad at actually bringing you to 0, but hitting 0 satiety with no food in inventory will kill you. A recent-ish change made it so you auto-eat at 0 satiety if you're carrying food, but it's still suicidal to linger in Starving/Fainting as you take combat penalties, can't cast spells, and risk random paralysis from fainting spells.

>wield-ID a blunt weapon

Oh wow, such great strategic choices.
>>
>>183520104
Each creature produced its own kind of meat, as you know. Also, in order to butcher them, you had to wield a cutting weapon. So, it would be fairly standard for a mace-user to keep a knife (because it's lighter than a dagger).

Of course you had to do all of this manually, and chunks were still often a waste of time because you couldn't eat them unless you were hungry, but you still had to get your chunks in case you might get hungry before they go bad.

Crawl was never Brogue-levels of hunger bullshit, but at that time it was a much tighter hunger clock, and you could genuinely fear death from hunger (something which you have no ability to do anything about).

Is there any in-game way to be done with the hunger and thirst mechanics of Cataclysm? I'm trying to build a blob car and it's annoying constantly needing to go get more food and water. Neither of those things are even an issue after like 3 days, it's just tedious.

Good job wasting that many finite resources against an enemy that's essentially an orc wizard, I guess.
>>
>>183533092
You can delay eating well into starving, it only causes slowdown and stat penalties until instakill.
But starving-to-instakill takes more time than from full to starving.
Same for water: if you're not "parched", you aren't at any risk of dying from dehydration.

Other than that, plant mutation "tree".
>>
>>183521847
But this kinda makes me want to play. Nethack has so many scripted mechanics so there are still plenty of exploits and stuff. Altough I have tried to not spoil myself I know in order to finish the game you'll need ascension kit and stuff like that. But luckily it's been years and I have no proper memory of those spoilers.
>>
>>183533092
For water just stick a funnel and big tank in your car (or the ground) and you shouldn't need to worry about water until winter.

For food, not really, you can smoke ants and spider basements or go full autist and farm oats but it's not as trivial effort as water.

Yeah, the basic gelatinous frame is kind of squishy. You can work up to gray (I think?) that are the more durable type. Blob bits also break off into a growing <whatever> so in that sense they are fragile but regenerate.

I saw all kinds of shilling for this "roguelike" on reddit.

The animations look too slow (honestly, any real roguelike player shouldn't care for animations at all), there's no ASCII mode, and I don't think there's even diagonal movement. Finally, it costs money.

However, it's strong points are its style, aesthetics, and theme. Not that these (save perhaps the third) should matter in a roguelike at all, but still.

You need to use the "Growing Mass of Tendrils" recipe to make an Amorphous Heart, which functions as the controls, engine, seat, and for some reason also a water cannon. From there you can use any of the main 3 types of masses to make a fuel tank for liquefied blob feed, which functions as gasoline for the amorphous heart. You can also use a grey mass and some other things to make a growing glowing mass, which grows into a gelectrode which can be used as a gel generator. Apparently, since there is actual 0 explanation about it even in the mod's thread on the Cataclysm forum, you refill it with a battery and from there it slowly produces electricity on its own. I'm not sure if it's also taking liquefied blob feed from my tanks.

I really want to like this mod but it's just a complete mess.

By style and aesthetics, I meant strictly graphical style. So yeah, I meant the same thing there.

By theme, though, I meant to include its "story" and setting.

But yeah, like I said, these three things matter little in a roguelike. The gameplay itself looks boring and derivative.

Oh. I saw the amorphous heart and figured it was a turret since it uses launcher skill and water. And the gelectrode says it uses blob feed when you install it, and I could never get it to take it.

The mad science slime-car idea is cool but between the high skill requirements and no documentation whatsoever it's just impractical to use.

The gel generator needs to start with at least some charge so that it can start producing electricity, presumably using a tank of liquefied blob feed. The gel generator is very slow and blob batteries have car battery capacity though, so I don't know how effective blob electricity weapons would be.
>>
>>183546472

I just tested out my 2 gel shooters on a giant bee and do not bother. I parked my car next to it and had to wait 10 minutes of sustained fire for the turrets to finally kill the bee. They have awful accuracy and damage.

It seems like the progression of blob vehicle parts is based more on how patient you are than any actual need to go out and find materials. The only reason why you would ever make a vehicle with gel masses instead of grey masses is because gel masses are lighter so you don't need as many trips to the basement to get more for your vehicle.

I finally found out how the amorphous heart's cannon works. It fires an explosion of water at any nearby enemy. It uses all 100 units of water in its ammo capacity and cannot be reloaded with water tanks, so basically it's completely useless.

What is the deep difference between Angband and Stone Soup? Both seem to be very similar in this sense your only interaction is to kill monsters and they are both quite streamlined in terms of content and mechanics. Someone earlier even complained DCSS is not even a roguelike (which is not true?).

Angband is a "band" in that it regenerates dungeons and you can grind forever.
DCSS is a "hack" in that you are supposed to manage resources - including monsters of appropriate level - but things left on the floor stay there

Ahh yeah that makes sense. I found some kind of comparison of Nethack and DCSS, that was helpful. I'm giving DCSS a try. Would be actually interesting to see DCSS/Angband with Diablo 2 graphics in isometric view. I wonder how much work would that be. Or even ascii -> 3d "wrapper" just like what Dwarf Fortress is doing. I wonder how much work would be to rip off 3d models off from World of Warcraft (as that has huge beastiary and you could find a replacement model for probably almost every monster) and then create a scene based on that. But oh well I have pretty limited coding skills. I mention WoW and borrowing graphics from there because creating everything from scratch professionally would take, well.. literally years of work anyway. Just a thought. Not leading anywhere.

That Crawl has lasting appeal because of constant tinkering is your opinion, not fact, and it's kind of embarrassing that you thought that assertion would fly.
>>
>>183591617
This, not to mention that the crawl skill system and gods means that there's a fuckload of potential build options, even for a simple combo like GhMo, thus increasing re-playability. And then there's stuff like nethack where a wizard will always play like a wizard, unlike crawl where a wizard can hybridise and play in a number of different styles. Nethack's set path might provide a tighter experience the first time you play it through, but not for the runs after that.

A GhMo of Kiku play more differently than a GhMo of Chei for example. A DrWz^Vehumet is different from a DrWz^Ru.

>GhMo of Kiku play more differently than a GhMo of Chei for example
Yes but GhMo of Chei plays the same as literally any other melee chei worshiper of any race. Crawl has a lot of "character creation".

Crawl's system means you can play each combo in a several different ways. But they are the SAME several ways for any combo. It ends up having a lot less variation between playthroughs compared to games with more restrictive class systems.

Depends on class and your starting stats.
Strength is actually better for low-weight weapons and dex is better for high-weight weapons, because dex gives a flat bonus to blows while str's bonus is divided by weapon weight.
But in actual practice I never actually think about all this shit. I just boost str first and then switch to dex after I reach 18/50ish. Ninja and Duelist are exceptions because they use dex for more shit.

Well post about demon are always just "I recruited [monster]" or "Look I have [power]". Or one demonposter posts a win and the one other demonposter says "Wow your [monster] has [power1] and [power2]!" That kind of shit is pretty meaningless to someone who doesn't already know the game.

As someone who has been watching a few video guides I have some advice:
Shorten the videos, play faster, edit videos.
There is a place for voice over play throughs but very few have patience for that.
I'm surprised no one has made abridged video guides only showing the highlights and showing the crucial decision points and "oh fuck I might lose here" moments.
>>
>>183598935
might have to do with the fact that it's a metric ass-ton of work
>>
>>183598021
Of course, the total playstyles in the game typically amount to heavy melee, caster or stabber. But there's a decent amount of variation even amongst characters of the same playstyle. A SpEn^Ashenzari and an OpEE^Dithmenos(using petrify to stab things) are still the same archetype but have different strengths and weaknesses, and different styles to approach problems.

The spriggan will typically run away from dangerous unhexable enemies, but the octopode can opt to do LRD to kill it or passwall to escape, or hope sandblast + shadow mimic will handle it, if the enemy has low AC, since it has offensive capability the spriggan doesn't. Despite still being a 'stabber'
>>
Tales of Maj'Eyal (ToME) is an amazing roguelike and every detractor in this thread is a casual who can't handle Insane+.
>>
>>183598935
Thank you for your advice. I plan on doing all those things in other videos, I agree that would probably have more popularity. I'm not any good at video editing yet but this should be a good chance for me to learn that skill. Also once I'm done with this OpAe I'll probably do a speedrun video (I have done sub-1-hr mibe with vanilla RC file, so I'm hoping people might enjoy that.)

I do think that longform videos have a place though - DCSS is a game where all your decisions can sort of slowly add up to murder you over time if you're making bad ones, so keeping everything lets you pick up on small but valuable playstyle tips (kiting, luring, movement styles, etc).
>>
>>183598685
Get a better mic, and shorten the vids is the most immediate advice.

Also, I like watching 'hard' races like Op,Fe and Mu and conduct runs. I don't think I've seen anyone on youtube do a DUPZ run(dungeon -> depths -> pan -> zot with no other branches) which sounds really fun to watch,

I've played it and enjoyed it, until I splatted repeatedly to a mage skellyman in the second dungeon. It was very annoying, that. Otherwise, it was fun. The abilities worked well, I felt, and it made the player feel powerful, like someone said earlier in this thread. It's worth at least a try, if not more.
>>
>>183609224
POWDER is much to simplistic for my tastes. It doesn't even have diagonal movement.

>>183609443
Admittedly, PosChengband is a derivative (more like an amalgamation) of other variants, so it's probably not necessary to play them all. Of the ones I listed, ZAngband might be most redundant relative to PosChengband.

Oangband has an interesting combat system.

NPPAngband is mostly a Vanilla experience with "pet peeves" removed.

Quickband has a very short game (only 12 levels). It's worth a try if you like "short" roguelikes.

A *band that I didn't list earlier is "Steamband." It has this steampunk theme; it's kind of funny (yet it's a cohesive and distinct variant).

At the end of the day, though, it's probably good to have variety. POWDER, Cogmind, etc. are not bad games. It's just that there are some good Angband variants out there that are probably more representative of the genre, and are well-worth playing.

I'm trying out blob vehicle weapons now and the gel razor and shock bulb actually seem decent. The shock bulb is essentially free since it only uses 20 power per shot, which your gel generator(s) should be able to cover easily. Not going to lie, my interest in this fizzled out a bit. It seems like a great, tight game, and has some interesting stuff (e.g. the cold/heat mechanic, the way abilities and level-ups are handled) - yet, the game already feels a bit too "small."

I like having single-screen dungeons (e.g. ADOM), but these dungeons almost feel too small, and too quick to explore. The "cold" theme feels limiting, and seems to make the game feel even smaller. Finally, I haven't yet seen much in the way of interesting items to use - progressing through the level is very "press shoot to win," without much else to do. Most other roguelikes I know at least have a few items scattered about in low dungeon levels, for the player to have options.

These are extreme first impressions of the game, and I'm probably missing a large portion of what it's about. Still, I couldn't stay interested. I will probably return to it, sometime, though.

For now, it's back to Angband. I never play rogue characters, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Any tips for playing a rogue character in vanilla Angband?

No it's not that, I've been thinking about a hobby project and I think I could hack something together just to satisfy my own curiosity. But...at the moment I have lot of work (10+ hours in front of computer as well but in the office animating shit) and I think I shouldn't try to procrastinate. I think on rudimentary level it's easy to capture any tty output and because roguelikes (I was thinking about Nethack or Angband) are character based it's possible to write external utility to display the scene in 3d graphics which you can rotate and zoom etc but just with simple opengl lighting and shading - for now just as a proof of concept and maybe expand that later on.

I find ranged attacks to be somewhat more accurate than melee while blind. So, if it begins pecking and I can't break away from it I start tossing rocks/knives. But, obviously, tossing a rock BEFORE it closes in is the best course of action.

>>183623085
Mind eaters? Dunno, never had any problems with killing them before they close in or sneaking around. Ghosts and polyps are a lot more annoying. But then again: ghosts are semi-anchored to spot where they spawned on and lose interest in pursuing char once he manages to break direct contact, while polyps cannot bypass closed doors, allowing them to be simply locked behind.

The worst thing about it is the inability to pan around the screen; instead the game works like animal crossing; when you cross from the drawn area you're currently in into the next area the game redraws the screen. how many total crafting rigs ARE there? you can probably just scan the list yourself and decide what's useful
off the top of my head:
-welder: do you even need this for blob stuff?
-forge: kinda useless except for steel crossbow bolts
-kitchen set: entirely obsoleted by chemistry set + faucet
-chemistry set: good for cooking eggs AND mutagen!
-foodco kitchen buddy: infinite canning, vacuum-sealing, and dehydration. solves any food problems you still have by letting you create a massive autismhoard of nonperishables
>>
>>183654071
The FOODCO one, probably. Convenient for mass dehydration and purifying. Most of the others aren't used often or can be substituted with the integrated toolset bionic if you have that.

Though with four slots you could do foodco, welder, chem lab, forge, which covers everything but the (mostly useless) fridge. It would make your vehicle impassible vertically, though.

You could also forgo them entirely and use the ups recharger + tool mod, but this uses tons of battery so I wouldn't use this on something you use frequently.

Not a problem once you have four large storage batteries and twelve solar panels.

Oh, I don't mind the concept of crazy fire pylons, I think they're cool. Like potions of creeping death in Brogue. Dangerous, but has its uses.

However I do think the concept of "fire spreading across an entire cavern/basement made of stone" is really counter-intuitive, especially since pylon fire doesn't seem any different from molotov/brazier fire, and I wish IA dev had not added incorrect information to the changelog.

Any tips for new players?
>>
>>183696183
Haven't seen any infographics for it but I will be doing relatively in depth explanations in my videos when I get to branch ends.
>>
>>183696570
>Any tips for new players?
Sure.
1. Start with legs instead of wheels. Treads are also good but I don't think they're an option at first.

2. On the first floor, your main goal should be to find the stockpile of storage containers and grab two Large Storage Containers. Fill them up with spare parts (esp. weapons) and any other cool stuff you find, then find an exit.

3. Exits either take you to the next floor, which restores your core integrity (this is the only way to heal) and gives you a level up, or to a branch, which delays your heal but can contain useful rewards. You won't know where it leads until you identify the exit with a signal interpreter or at a terminal. On the early floors this is not that important, but it's safer to avoid the mines branch if possible.

4. It's worth figuring out the differences between weapons, but early on you're fine if you just equip the ones with the highest rating that won't make you overheat. Energy weapons make more heat. Explosives are extremely good but should only be used if you're in danger.

5. You can actually use any terminal command at any terminal, including a few secret ones. You can learn these from npcs/by looking them up on the wiki but the really important one is Trojan(Track). Enter that as a manual

6. Actually instead of reading this autistic post just watch the first few minutes of this playthrough: www.twitch tv/videos/136601529
>>
So after even more working with blob vehicles, I've found out how to get gel lamps and retrievers to work. The Amorphous Core doesn't have electronics controls for some reason so you need to install separate non-blob electric controls on top of them so you can turn on your devices. It looks like shock bulbs actually don't need electricity to fire if they're set to automatic. They'll still drain your battery charges if you have any, though.

The thing about flying polyps is that they forget you really quickly.
They are dangerous in melee and mostly invincible, but they don't cause shock since you can't see them and they move around super randomly.
If it's blocking a long corridor, you're kinda screwed though.
If not, you can probably just walk past it.

How am I supposed to avoid / counter [P]hantoms? I can deal with [T]rolls when required, but it seems like phantoms are just kinda cheap and impossible to deal with ahead of time since you can't see them without rings.

Internalising the tactics needed to win takes some amount of time, and even more time to master other playstyles that aren't heavy melee.

I recommend MiFi^Makhleb, that build allows for tons of mistakes.

You can still have a nuanced "skill system" alongside "bumping shit." See Sil - it's all about positioning and "timing" (in a turn-based sense).

"Bumping shit" is still a great mechanic, because it really aligns well with the non-modality of combat. Not to mention - it's a necessarily quick mechanic. I hate games that force you to open a menu for the most mundane attacks.

I would recommend going with Kiku, getting death channel, wearing heavyish armour(up to scale/chain) and putting pain brand on a fast weapon like a dagger.

seems much easier than Brogue so far

The player has an inherent "dash" ability that lets them move 3 squares in 1 turn, and it only has a 4 turn cooldown
I picked poison mage and so far I can just kite everything forever.

The spells are inventory items, sort of like Brogue's staves, but they only have 1 use and they recharge much faster. I can cast this poison spell once every 8 turns and it does enough damage to oneshot every monster I've run into so far.

This game has "runes" that replace Brogue's enchantment scrolls and I think they're probably more interesting. If I find a rune of poison I can stick it onto a dagger to make a poisoned dagger, stick it onto a 'blank spell' to make a poison spell, or stick it onto a pre-existing poison spell/dagger to increase its enchantment by +1.

>>
>>183719685
Hm, I wonder what compiler you're using?

It compiles fine for me.

I explicitly chose not to initialize "mon_type" on declaration, to allow tools like valgrind to detect ACTUAL uninitialized usage. I've started to consider this a better practice in some situations than to initialize with a dummy value "just in case".

I guess I could initialize "mon_type" on initialization here, but I'd really prefer not to - I think the current way is correct.

I can't really say. The code for the earliest versions where pure abominations though.

I literally learned C++/programming mostly from this project, and have rewritten lots of stuff over the years.

Might be worth to set up Travic CI for multiple compilers - at least the common ones, like the gcc bundled with CodeBlocks. This allows running all sorts of tests in controlled environment, built on multiple different compilers.
Travis is free for Open Source projects.
You can grab .travis.yml from DDA sources - it's pretty clean and easy to adapt.

I also use it for building for deployment, though that's a bit more painful, as it requires setting up MXE for cross compilation, and github OAuth token.

Pure OpenGL is not good for starting out, especially since nowadays you are expected to set up all the shaders yourself.
Try SDL or some other graphics library and understand 2D before going for 3D.

Yes yes, I know. It's just frustrating, since the variable was totally guaranteed to be assigned to before being used - but the compiler couldn't detect that.

Anyway, I pushed a new commit now to get around the problem. If you'll pull and try again it should work.

SDL2. Not interested in graphics stuff, I just want it to work so I can mess around with game mechanics/algorithms.

Although it was fun to do a game from scratch rather than from a game engine or something.

Å is for Altar
I already found one of these before, a 'Chaos Altar' that enchanted an item by +3 in exchange for making it permanently cursed and unremovable. I dumped it on my ring so now I have a +5 ring of awareness letting me see the position of pretty much every monster on the level.

I'm down to depth 10 now and I've mostly just stuck to the strategy of "cast poison, kite for 8 turns, repeat" for everything I've met. I thought my build was royally fucked when I ran into a graveyard full of poison-immune skeletons on level 3 or 4, but I haven't had to deal with them since.
>>
I'm not sure if I'm missing something but the Unicorn game is kinda lame in spite of the development time. You're pretty much expected to spend over an hour just going to the first dungeon, killing everything that can't hurt you for loot, and going back to town to sell. Then you're supposed to rest at the Inn to advance time for the dungeon to reset so you can do it again until you're level 15+ and can do other dungeons. Like Poschengband but less fun.

Oh god so much crap in my inventory.
You can melt down enchanted or ego items at a forge to extract runes out of them, so you're sort of encouraged to hoard every single +1 sword in the dungeon. Luckily, the inventory's item limits seem to be per-item-type, so carrying all these useless swords and bucklers doesn't get in the way of my health potions.
I'm dual-wielding two +0 axes because they do more damage than any of the magic weapons I've found. I only actually use them when I want to whack something I've cast paralysis on, though. This game has no health regen (you only restore hp through items), so getting into straight up melee fights is a real bad idea compared to using wizard shenanigans to kill everything without getting hit.
