All tanks are viable, but WAR is the worst by a small margin.

Paladin's the one with the shield, yes. It's also the most traditional of all tanks having the ability to Cover a target or provide additional mitigation to their co-tank.

Dark Knight has plunge as a "charge" but it doesn't stun/interrupt and none of the tanks are truly "mobile." It has a mana management playstyle which is a hit or miss in terms of "fun." You'll know whether or not you like DRK very quickly.

Warrior is the meme tank that is intended to do the most damage while having the worst defensive tools. At the moment it does slightly less on average than Paladin and Dark Knight but very slightly less at top levels of play. Its mechanics also play against each other which makes playing it very awkward. The upcoming buff to Warrior is meant to address this.

None of the tanks really "come into their own" until Lv60, so they may seem pretty much the same until then, sadly. It's a decent time investment to "feel out" all of three of them, so just stick to Paladin for now and branch out after 70.

I loved Odin. I wish it had been added into the game sooner, and put into the MSQ as a huge progression block. It was extremely simple, but it taught importance of each role. It had a hard-hitting tankbuster that would murder tanks if they didn't cooldown intelligently, the healers had to react to the tankbuster and all of the AOE damage and debuffs to cleanse, and DPS had to actually avoid AOE while performing well enough to both kill the spears to stop the burden on the healers, and make the DPS check (especially at the end). Very straightforward with no real trick mechanics to it.

Endlessly queueing for Odin to try to get his robe was one of my favourite parts of ARR, even when the groups were fucking awful I usually had a good time.

Eh. For ARR (1-50 content), this isn't a bad idea (especially if you are a DPS without a very active FC or friends to play with), but beyond ARR content quests simply do not offer enough XP to be worth while.

Dungeons, Palace of the Dead, and PvP are much better sources of experience beyond ARR, and even during 1-50 if you have access to fast queues.
