I feel like I'm not too great at ammo management so far. When or when not to use certain ammo types, and which are the best ones against certain monsters.
It feels like something that's super strong in the early game, but has diminishing returns later, and quickly.

I'm in an only gunner run in 4U and actually I'm in 8 star village quests.
For Basarios and Gravios I just made the Royal Ludroth LBG for water rapid fire and they die in no time. A Crag S rapid fire is good too, I can stun a monster like 4 times in just a hunt.
In my main save I hunt Akantor and Ukanlos using gunner weapons. I got used so much to bowguns that I can't use any other weapons against them.

Rajang, Molten Tigrex, and Gore Magala. They are pretty much the monster that helped me to git gud until I can finally speedrun them and master the weapon against them which is GS and CB.

Yeah because the vast majority of competent players choose handicaps, let alone permanent ones. All that means is that if I see someone with big tits I'm kicking on sight even harder than I would just on principle, because they are basically a french shitter in a bad looking low rank mixed set with no skills or only a negative skill/health+ active in g rank. But even if they're just cosmetic, retardedly huge tits would definitely be an easy way to filter out actual mental cripples like furries and children, so I do support the idea. There is no reason to shell besides extending combos and (raising the dumb fucking heat gauge), unless you are specifically trying to break Gravios's head. And there is almost never an opening that requires shelling to extend your combo as opposed to scooping. Shells are a damage loss compared to pokes (yes, even with artillery expert/god and no raw-boosting skills), plain and simple, and on top of that you can't dodge or block immediately afterward (and I know it can block faster than dodge, but the block still takes almost as long as it takes to block after a poke, which is obscene since pokes can combo straight into dodges). So just keep the dodging thing to add an element of risk and, hear me out here, double the damage of shelling. All shelling, WF too. Double that fucking shit. It's a gunlance, the gun is the main attraction. Pokes should be linking explosions, not vice versa. Is that enough to "fix" the weapon? No, it's going to need a whole slew of buffs, but it's a start.

Sword to axe is easier, you can block from the start of the switch until the weapon is over your shoulder basically. Fast monsters or 140s can make it feel hard to do anyway, especially if you make a habit of AEDing mindlessly and get punished. If someone needs to take it slow and do a couple of hunts before feeling like they can GP moves, then whatever I guess, but if you're going to take a couple of hunts to learn, it's not like you don't want to learn when to GP eventually.

I "mained" it for a while (as in for several hundred hunts I used it in probably a third of my hunts, which was more than any other weapon). I feel I'm pretty decent with it.

It's not actually an easy weapon to use at all, though this is more the fault of the controller than anything. It IS the easiest weapon to not die with while still dealing damage because of its range and its incredible mobility, but actually dealing adequate damage requires a lot more skill than most weapons.

My first bit of advice is to use the options menu to edit some settings. Namely, I turn bow aiming to manual (so the laser guide and ability to adjust aim doesn't disappear every time you dodge), turn off terrain savvy (which not only seems to fail to ever actually automatically adjust for shitty slanted terrain, but will randomly reset your aim, and I could never figure out what triggers it to do so), and while this may be more personal taste, turn off the setting that makes the camera swing behind you while quickaiming bows and guns (if you leave this on, aiming to the right or left will drag your camera with the bow- you can simulate this effect with it off, albeit jumpily, by mashing the lockon/camera swing button to keep it behind your character- and if your character turns, when they raise the bow again your camera will automatically swing behind them- I feel this setting is basically redundant with the lockon/swing function, and only serves as an annoyance to compensate for rather than a genuinely helpful feature, so I turn it off). I really suggest taking a look through the options menu in general if you haven't, it's incredibly robust for a handheld game.

Slanted surfaces will never not be a pain in the ass with gunner weapons on 3DS, but you handle them in the same way you handle bow in almost any other hunt, you just have to micromanage your camera angle a lot more. Turn on manual aiming (X by default, R if you choose to use the old style bow controls; I actually prefer the new ones personally but this is entirely up to taste), and tweak your VERTICAL angle. Do not bother aiming from side to side with the bow aim, it's a waste of time as the aim pans very slowly, and as I'll address in a second there's a much simpler and better way. But if your vertical angle matches that of the monster's weakpoint (usually the head) at critical distance, you'll always be able to hit it on level ground. When you have to aim up or down along a slope or series of ledges it becomes more of a pain, especially since the camera is locked to your vertical angle regardless of whether you have autoswing enabled. In these cases I try to remain a consistent distance above or below the monster for as long as possible, but it definitely hurts my performance a bit.

If you're not familiar with gunner weapons, critical distance is VERY important. That's when the screen shakes as your shots hit their target, it varies between shot types. You want to be about three to four rolls away with rapid type bows, very close with spread and like across the fucking map with pierce (but pierce bow in general isn't very good past gen 2). Being in critical distance gives you a huge 50% damage bonus, the same bonus you get from power coatings (power coating level 2 in XXX). These stack multiplicatively, of course, and also stack with [shot type] up armour skills (10% bonus for rapid and pierce, 30% for spread which is a big part of the reason spread is inherently the strongest shot type, though rapid has much better individual bows that use it basically negating spread's inherent advantages and is way safer and easier to use anyway).

You can carry 50 power coatings, which should be enough or close to enough to finish most hunts or get really damn close. Make sure to make every shot count, it's better to wait for a shot than to whiff and waste a coating and have to charge all the way again.

Lastly, damage stacking is a huge part of what makes gunner weapons strong, and you should be doing that. Gunner weapons actually tend to be really weak early on because you don't have access to many armour skills or resources to make ammo. You want:
>normal/pierce/spread up: 10% damage boost, 30% in the case of spread, a very important skill
>attack up large/critical eye +3: roughly a 7.5-12.5% damage boost, depending on your base raw (CE+3 is 7.5%, at least without the crit boost skill). You can have lower levels of these to fit in other skills, be smart about it.
>weakness exploit: Especially in X/XX. WE is still good even in games where it doesn't give you 50% extra affinity. In X/XX WE DOES give 50% affinity when hitting hitzones over 45, which is a 12.5% damage bonus, 20% if combined with crit boost, which also boosts the effects of other damage skills.
>trueshot up and crit boost: Only in X/XX, they didn't exist prior. Crit boost boosts the bonus from a critical hit from 25% to 40%, best used with WE. Trueshot up makes your powershots do more damage (20% more to be exact).
>power coat+: If your bow doesn't have power coatings/level 2 innately, this is a huge damage bonus.
>ammo saver: can be useful against monsters with more health to preserve power coatings, also an X/XX only skill.
>focus: Not as priority as you would think, but try it out and see if you need it. It's not optimal for TAs, especially in X/XX where every bow is a powershot bow and trueshot up exists, but it makes your life easier.
