Power bugs are viable regardless. Effect extender isn't double like in 4U and level 3 extract hunter has effect extender regardless of bug plus each bug has major benefits unlike in 4U where they mostly pertained to the bugs' attacks alone. There's bugs taht give you an extra AUL when you have red, bugs that give you CE+3 when you have white, the only bugs which aren't so great are the pure stamina bugs (the effect extender bugs from 4U, bilbobrix and ladytower), which just give you defence up with orange and mounting master with red (and longer duration on red and orange if you have the two together).

Weight also doesn't matter much when actually using brave, I've found. Generally the combo I use is XXAA, since A after any other A attack automatically does a STRONG kinsect shot (simply pressing A+forward does a regular shot, though pressing it again changes it to a strong shot- can miss if you use it too close to the monster though. The first A in the combo meanwhile calls the bug back, restoring a lot of stamina). So power, speed (for affinity up) and balanced (especially if you're using the new hunter art that makes strong kinsect shots hit several times) should all still be good, and stamina bugs should still be generally the worst in gen. Sadly, given that ladytower is the cutest buggo.

It genuinely isn't good, it's slower AND weaker than a poke and you still don't get contiguous SA frames if you XA A XA. Its main purpose is hitting monsters when you miscalculate and they end up to the side of you instead of in front of you while you're in a poke combo, to eke out a little more damage before repositioning. Nice strawman, but I'm actually arguing that GL is functionally no more like lance than LS is. Especially with brave style allowing LS to block. I wouldn't argue that lance and gunlance are as alike as DB and hammer are, because that would not be relevant first of all, and would not be true second of all.

There are two fundamental flaws in your argument. One is that gunlance is just "lance+gimmick," when the two play completely differently (and that's AFTER considering that you don't actually shell with GL); the other is that two weapons being similar is not a reason for whichever was introduced first to be better, the same way bow exceeded bowguns in Gen, or LS has exceeded GS (of course, LS doesn't have a charge attack and GS doesn't have a spirit gauge, but GS didn't have a charge attack originally either, and LS's spirit gauge was just fuel for spirit attacks), or DB has exceeded SnS, throughout various titles in the series.

After a few hunts I post a huntress. There's a lot of downtime in the lobbies.

So I'm playing 4U and I still don't understand the point of these expeditions. I'm only in high rank but I don't see why I should do any of these except to maybe get armor parts for a monster I can't fight in Caravan or Gathering Hall quests. Are these only meant for end game stuff?

I know what you mean. I did my best with mine (pawn on the right, PC on the left and in that first pic), but it's hard enough to make an adult-looking face look good in DD's character creator (in fact old men are about all that you can easily make). It clearly wasn't made for making young folk, even though it lets you make a skinny 3'11" person and there are people clearly meant to be children in the game as well as what appears to be a child preset complete with pigtails and freckles.

If the Handler is any indication, MHW's face generation will probably be even worse!

I've got all my good sets and spent so many hours farming the charms I needed but it got so boring rotating through all those sets all the time. They're free hunts that can't be failed, so you can just treat them as a comfy hunt or use them as practice (really good if you're learning a new weapon for example, or just trying to git gud). There's one G rank monster (savage jho) that ONLY appeared on free hunts for a long time and had some good equipment (there's an online event quest for it now, though), and they are the best source of caravan points (for buying dusts of life to save your dumb fucking teammates with, and for polishing and upgrading relics, which if you're high rank you could actually look into for a weapon that will last you until close to endgame, though eventually because of how relics work you'll want to replace it with a G rank one or one of the best craftables).

But the main function most use them for is grinding for guild quests. The guild quests in turn just serve to get you better relics than you can find on the expeditions themselves (expedition relics are basically never worthwhile, the chance of finding even a decent one for where you are in the game past low rank is very low), and relics for most weapons are stronger than anything you can craft (bowguns are the only exception, relics can be about as good as craftables but not definitively better in their case, though perfect relic bows are also only marginally better than the best craftable bow). Last additional benefit of relics is that you can control what skin you get by what monster is in the first slot (generally you want a two-slot GQ with your monster with your skin of choice in slot 1 and rajang in slot 2 so you get as many rewards as possible).

So basically they're an indirect path to getting the strongest weapons in the game, and a direct path to making them usable and upgrading them further.

pierce and normal ammos don't really work how you'd expect, levels are not linear improvements but thematically similar ammos with different variables.

Normal 1 is infinite; Normal 2 is high damage per-hit; Normal 3 ricochets, and is rarely good, but you're basically rolling the dice that you'll get lucky shots and get pierce 3 tier damage but focused on two hitzones and it works even on smaller targets.

Pierce does scale linearly, but doesn't get better. Higher levels of pierce hit MORE TIMES, but each individual hit does LESS DAMAGE, and the hits grow further apart. So pierce 1 has a few higher-damage hits all spaced closer together than you might expect, allowing you to often land every hit in the same weakspot, so it is basically normal 2 but better in a lot of situations; Pierce 2 has more total damage but a little less per hit and an extra hit and will basically never hit a single hitzone instead of multiple on all but the largest monsters; Pierce 3 is unlikely to even land all of its hits before passing through less than giant monsters. So in general, pierce 1 is the strongest, especially since it usually works even hitting a monster from the side instead of down its length.

There's no wrong weapon for rajang really, but solo HH, GL and HBG might struggle due to power and/or mobility issues. There's a good chance it'll fuck your shit no matter what weapon you use, since it's your first time and it's a very aggressive monster with a lot of oversized hitboxes and 80% chip damage when it moves.

He's doable with a hammer but it's definitely harder, he's very mobile and hammer has a hard time keeping up with him so you're gonna be losing on a lot of chances to do damage, unless you play hammer like a gimped GS but at that point you might as well play GS.
