The real problem with defensive tanks is the only place you can go is backward towards another defensive area. Perhaps a few to pull security? Another bunch as reserve to commit for a counter attack?

I wish there are more books for this shit, the best one I've read is WW2 era Panzer tactics.

They can drive out of the trenches and attack you know
Though it's a bad idea to condense too much tanks into a relatively small area, so a spread of entrenched tanks and the rest reserved a few kilometers in the rear sounds optimal
gulf war was the epitome of tank entrenchment and I wish there are detailed maps showing how the Iraqis layered their defenses and I'm pretty surprised that many armies aren't building strategies around this free hulldown position tactic
>>
>>182753124
Try looking with keywords like after action report and small unit. Sometimes you get really lucky.
That said I don't know how graviteam tactics or irl tank tactics work. I wish there was a "Fighter tactics and maneuvering" book for tanks.

viggen, gazelle or the 21?
Mostly want to ground attack.
>>
>>182756795
Viggen has unguided bombs, low drag and high drag. GPS guided cluster dispensers, TV guided missiles, 2 types of ASHM and a SACLOS missile
>>
>>182756795
Viggen is the most capable of the 3 for ground attack, but also by far the most difficult to get good at.

The 21 is quite decent with groms and rockets and is much easier to get results with.

The gazelle is also capable but is limited by loadout options.
>>
>>182756795
The Viggen is a strike fighter, the MiG a multirole fighter bomber and the gazelle a light helicopter. Personally I like the Viggen
>>

Hi, I got a problem with a HOTAS controller.
I just bought the Thrustmaster TC16000 + TWCS throttle combo off Amazon on sale for 80 bucks. The hardware works great, but my problem is with the TARGET program that is used to map with it.

It keeps trying to add in rudder peddles that I don't have. It will bind axes that exist on the TWCS to the imaginary rudder peddles because it can't stand the idea that I don't have them. Furthermore, it refuses to list the TWCS hat switches at all. I have to bind them in macros to even make it acknowledge that they exist.
Outside of TARGET, I can use all of the buttons on both controllers just fine.

Anyone else have this problem? I would like to use target because I can't seem to get DCS to recognize buttons as modifier keys.
>>
>>182759117
It's because of a limitation with how DirectX handles controllers, there is a maximum number of buttons supported per device. When you use TARGEt you are turning the two controllers into one in the eyes of the software, so you are left with unusable buttons.

I had to use macros for by Warthog, loads of my buttons are macroed to keyboard inputs when I press them.

>I can't seem to get DCS to recognize buttons as modifier keys.
Why not? It's pretty easy last I checked?
>>
>>182759459
Oh.
That's really annoying. How do you get around modifier buttons, then?

>Pretty easy last I checked?
Maybe it's the way I'm doing it, I hold a button that I wish to be my modifier and then I tap another button.

For whatever reason, it's not letting me depress one button and then tap another to recognize it as a modifier. Is there something I'm missing?
As you can tell, I'm very new. I can take the Mig21 off, engage a target, and land it. Nothing more than that so far.
>>
>>182759459
And if you don't mind me asking: I want to have aircraft trim bound to a wheel on the side of my throttle, but aircraft trim isn't listed in the menu options as being able to be bound to an axis, is there a way around that?
>>
>>182759614
You need to click modifiers at the bottom of the control binding window and from there you can designate a button as a modifier
>>
>>182759875
Thank you

Well, we don't have any Vietnam ground units or SAMs, we don't have a Vietnam MiG-21, we don't have a Vietnam F-5, we're not getting a Vietnam MiG-19, and our Huey is not really typical of those in Vietnam, though it does represent Aussie UH-1Hs pretty well.

The F-4E should fit pretty well though, depending on the block.

The only kill I ever got in the MiG-21 is from engaging an Eagle that had just bugged out from a dogfight. It requires you to play very smart and get enemies that might be otherwise engaged or not looking out for a threat.

Why does it look like rocket with strapped wings on sides, was it fast?
>>

Depending on who tells the story:
The sensors were inop
The pins that actually hold the gear in place in the event the handle is raised were removed for repair or something.
The sensors/pins were present, but the handle has a manual override which was inadvertently triggered.

The training captain in question had a history of errors, for what that's worth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossair_Flight_3597#Final_report

Limited to Mach 1.8 at low altitude but could go faster at higher altitudes because of limitations with the intake spike. It is very fast if used correctly.
>>
>>182788318
All modern fast jets have a pretty similar top speed, so although the MiG-21 is very fast it's not actually notably faster than most other fighter jets. If a jet's speed is a talking point it's more likely to be notable for having a low top speed than a high one.

I don't see a problem here. The missile was tracking correctly, just didn't get close enough to detonate with its fusing due to losing so much speed from excessive drag.

Just learn one at a time. Each plane has it's drawbacks and advantages. The Viggen can't really do much in an A2A fight but it's fucking fast. The MiG is faster at altitude and can shoot planes decently. The F-5 is slower but better at dogfighting.

Nigga the MiG-21 is fine, they're all different planes that are good at different things. Even if you're purely interested in which is the 'best', the MiG-21 is arguably the best of the three when flown to its strengths.

Yes, it's a lot less clunky on the real aircraft. it just has weird controls that don't translate all too well into a normal Warthog style HOTAS layout.

Well it's not a fighter, the missiles are for self defence or for use in the interceptor role. As in the 70s the Soviets didn't have any fighters with the range to escort bombers all the way to Sweden and back, this wasn't seen as a very big setback.

Even bearing that in mind it's not too shabby in a fight and has a fair few tricks up its sleeve, incredible speed for one. Not every dogfight is a constant flat turn, if it was the F-5E would win every time.
>>
>>182801807
The version that was an interceptor had a modified engine since the AJ/AJS version sufers from compressor stalls at high altitudes. The interceptor version could use Skyflas (a better AIM-7)
>>
>>182801807
>>182801326
Viggen was designed more as a strike fighter with emphasis on anti-naval operations from treetop level, I believe it can carry gunpods but like anon said the AA abilities are mostly self-defense.
>>
>>182801975
I was referring to the AJ 37s secondary role as an interceptor.
>>
>>182801807
sounds weird, whom did they want to strafe with their wiggens, their neighbors? for the self defense it's much better to have fighters/interceptors imo
>>
>>182802028
can the gunpods be used against planes?
>>
>>182803076
The Soviets.

The Viggen isn't really for bombing/strafing, it has the armament to do it but its primary role is as a maritime strike craft. It was built from the ground up to attack the Soviet Baltic fleet in the event it steamed across the Baltic. If the Viggen ever dropped a bomb in anger it would be because it's primary mission to stop the invasion had failed.
>for the self defense it's much better to have fighters/interceptors imo
Doesn't do jack shit against a huge Soviet amphibious landing.

>>182803109
Yes
>>
>>182803468
and who would cover them, not like soviet fleet would have no fighter cover

vtol yak-38 was introduced in 70ss and in any case in such an event they would take some airfields first assuming the range problem

>>

>>
>>182804361
I already explained that the Soviets didn't have any real fighters with the range to escort the fleet & bombers. The Draken was deemed sufficient to take on any aircraft that did have the range to engage Swedish aircraft.

>vtol yak-38 was introduced in 70s
Did it serve in the Baltic? Either way, it wasn't really a fighter.

>in any case in such an event they would take some airfields first assuming the range problem
If the Soviets managed to land in Sweden the battle was already lost, so that's immaterial.
>>

As long as you don't team-kill it's all fine. Didn't hear of anyone shitting on cold war server tho. Last time I saw Mig-21 kill a f-5 there, and f-5 explained that jamming broadcasts his positions, how to use it and etc

We're reaching 3rd gen operational autism levels that shouldn't even be possible. Presenting you: Terrain avoidance radar in DCS F-5E-3:
>set radar range less than 40nm
>set radar elevation ~5.5° up (so the bottom edge of the radar cone becomes 0°)
>enjoy your primitive terrain avoidance radar
How to use:
>if there is green stuff on the center line, it means deep shit is approaching towards you. you need to maneuver
>if there are empty holes in the line of radar returns, then it's a valley, turn towards it
>if there are no holes but indents that go away from you then it's like a valley but it's going up. you need to turn towards it and pull up
>if there are now no returns than you can start descending again
I only tried this in clear visibility by pretending, so I'm not sure how practical it is in fog.
If you get git gud enough with this, you can start playing with the elevation to get better views. You should be able to fly above clouds, peek beneath them and tell what ground features are down there. You can of course rely this to FC3 babbies so they can penetrate clouds without crashing, while you being smug in the knowledge that their babby mode radars can't do cool things like that.
Hell, if you can into enough visualization and eyeball trigonometry, theoretically you should be able to not only tell your radar altitude, but the altitudes around you too.
Going even crazier, I'm not sure if it's modeled in DCS, but since the "clutter" of a metal vehicle is greater than typical ground clutter, you should be able to scan beneath you, see the bigger returns, and with the skills mentioned above, determine the positions of vehicle columns and stuff like that. It would be like ground radar but 1D, you mentally making the 2nd dimension by scanning elevations. But that's likely not modeled.

Man I wish I had a multi-frequency AESA radar with passive listening ability. You can do so much amazing with it not even related to radar, you fags have no idea.

Proximity fuses have always been in the game, typically with a range of around 20m or something like that if I recall. I think most probably over estimate how effective they think they should be.

Regardless, I recall that missile not even getting 50m away from that Viggen from the tacview I saw.

67th Spec Ops Sqn (MC-130P & J) attached from 252nd Spec Ops Wing
Det 95th Recon Sqn (RC-135) attached from 55th Recon Wing
· Det, NATO AWACS Sqn, Geilenkirchen Germany

· DDG 71, USS Ross, currently at sea off Lithuania
· DDG 72, USS Donald Cook about 6 hours East of Kiel Germany
· F 314 HNoMS Thor Heyerdahl
· SSN 780, USS Missouri
· S 803 HNLMS Zeeleeuw

Logistics: Forward bases are being set up with limited munitions as follows:

· Lask Poland: F-15C & E, F-16, F-22
· Cewice Poland: Typhoon T.3
· Malbork Poland: EF2000 Typhoon

Command: If hostilities should occur, the various NATO nations will declare forces for NATO use, others will be kept under national control, some will simply act in self defence. You will be assigned control of declared forces.

My planes are slowly identifying bogeys over Western Russia. We have identified SU24M2s and Su27SM2s. Fortunately, as you can see, we have just had some planes available. It will be about an hour or so before they get to the Baltic states. But it is 4 GODSPLANES, and 4 GODSPLANES++. I hope they get here in time. I scramble them, and will have the F22s fly as fast as possible, and fly a Stratotanker behind them to refeuel them later.

And here is border violation number 2 of the day, one of many to come I presume. The planes are foolish for flying unescorted, but I can't fire on them unless I get fired upon. Latvia doesn't even have air defense so there's no tactics I can do to drag contacts toward anything. Just identify and follow.

This is going worse than the operation over crimea but that is to be expected I suppose. The first ground facility to be destroyed by missiles is Ground Master Otepää. The entirety of the area of operations is engulfed in fierce combat. The fight over estonia is completely onesided. While I managed to inflict damage, it is nowhere near enough. A naval war has erupted in The Baltic Sea. four frigates are off the coast of Poland and are starting to exchange missiles with American and Lithuanian navies, with more planes about 15 miles from Gdańsk. Every fight I am currently in is not in my favour.

The Portugese F16s out of Lithuania have all been shot down, together with a Eurofighter.that was just splashed. This has caused Poland to declare forces to NATO command. Unfortunately I have to take a break here. I will carry on some other time.

The Russians have gained Air superiority over the Baltic States. Currently 3 Eurofighters (likely soon to be just 2) prevent them from having air supremacy. With the Raptors being painfully far away , it seems that we will have to grab it back from the Russians, if they don't manage to achieve their goals beforehand.

Regarding the Polish Air Force it isn't too bad. I have 24 F16s and 12 Mig29s at my disposal. The problem is that they will be dodging missiles all the way to Estonia to get in range. Honestly the situation is very bleak and I don't think I can retake superiority over any of the Baltic states due to Kaliningrad cutting off routes of reinforcement. Nevertheless, the next time I can play CMANO I will post my progress. Hope you've enjoyed so far.

Although given that 95% of the time, I fail to set up the FMC correctly and something goes wrong, it's not entirely surprising. Maddening little devices.

I'm stuck in this because:

Cold Waters
>Has a price tag above what I find reasonable $30 (plus they will charge for the DLCs)
> Has a great complex gameplay

American Truck Simulator
> Way cheaper (even with heavy haul DLC)
> Limited but more detailed scenarios (albeit New Mexico and the next states will be payed DLCs)
> Very limited in terms of playable vehicles
> The highest difficulty is mostly about parking long trailers backwards
> Doesn't require special hardware but having a driving wheel improves the feeling (and that's costly)

If you want to play modern subs for cheap then try Sub Command, Dangerous Waters or even 688i. They're all dated, more hardcore than CW, but they're cheap as chips and go on sale all the time. 688i has a cool big manual and tutorials to walk you through the displays, you just have to put up with dated 1998 3D visuals.

>>182924374
Huey is satisfying, but it can't do too much in terms of attacking. The KA-50 is far more satisfying to hunt ground targets with. Yes, the Shkval has an air-to-air mode. It doesn't make vikhrs lead their targets, tho.
>>
>>182924598
oh yes i meant vikhrs, not shkval. so you can lock and guide vikhrs to air targets but they don't lead ahead of the target movement, right? how about guns then? i don't want to be completely hopeless against a cheeky apache who is surely going to hellfire me. and how complicated are the avionics compared to a-10c?

Now /simg/ is back to flirting with page 10 eternally. Only the occasional ED-bashing or natoboo-slavaboo shitposting to keep us alive.

Hello from Russian /avsim/, pals.
This is my gift to you: http://rgho.st/6mHGpf5cX
A mission what was in development 3 years and played all those years by our small Russian group of DCS World players.
I love roguelikes, so I put a lot of random in there.
30 missions for all vehicles and 10 helicopters only.
The first mission is always the same for a reason. Others are given by random. Enemy AA and the targets could have different locations and types. Almost all missions are unique and fun to play but it's better to play it coop because there are could randomly arrive bots, so it'd be quite tricky to play it alone.
There is a lot to say but you better discover fun for yourself, lads.
Sometimes we host a server Kurwach on the weekends with this mission. Feel free join us and have fun if you catch us online.
I'm glad you were interested in us and joined our Telegram this is my last post and I leave this place. Cheers!

They are hardly arcade planes, its just a meme from butthurt autismos that need to git gud.

It can compete as much as a mig-29 can, and has custom missiles that are much better than EDs because lol fuck standardization

Supposedly they were creating a simulator for the RAF and were getting their data that way. Their license to use it in DCS was contingent on them withholding certain classified systems and deliberately introducing some inaccuracies.
>>
>>182841192
Is there something like this but offline?
>>
>>182985326
I have the distinct suspicion that the F-14 will completely destroy anything else in the sky.

Think about it: We know every first party missile in DCS is shit. We also know that you can add third party flight physics for missiles. This is why the mirage 530 is like the best radar guided missile right now.

So put two and two together: What do you get if you get a normal Phoenix, versus bad other missiles. Suddenly the meme missile is competetive, and it outranges everything else in the game.

I wouldn't mind FC3 getting re-worked a bit. Maybe not full-fidelity, but to maybe balance it against the other planes which are full fidelity.
Otherwise, we may as well go to the Ace Combat thread for all the simulator value we're getting out of them.
>>
>>183033517
Please explain to me how limiting a plane to the most basic systems makes it unfair against full fidelity planes?

I've never heard this argument before, so you must be new. Please, lay it on me.
>>
>>183033517
>but to maybe balance
in a sim? this is completely on the map maker to "balance". As far as I'm concerned FM and avionics should be correct as close as possible.
>>
>>183033582
>Please explain to me how limiting a plane to the most basic systems makes it unfair against full fidelity planes?
Because those full fidelity players have to worry about actual problems the aircraft is facing. They have more to learn ,more to overcome, and at the end of the day they're still flying something that's just not as good as the FC3 aircraft.
>You must be new
Nice assumption. I've been saying this for a while. FC3 just isn't a very good module to put inside of the simulator.

If we had more full fidelity fighters which could go toe-to-toe with the FC3 planes, it would be different. Right now we only have the M2000, and it's still not as good because of its loadout and the bugs.

>>183033703
>in a sim?
These are not sim planes we're talking about, though.
>>
>>183033840
I guess my point is: If they want to go the FC3 route, then we should see dozens and dozens of planes in the game all with simplifications like the F-15 and the SU-27. If not, then they need to fix the mess they've made and try to make better full fidelity fighters in place of more FC3 planes.
either path is fine, but trying to toe the line has made the multiplayer wasteland that we have right now
>>
>>183033840
>full fidelity players have to worry about actual problems the aircraft is facing
What the fuck are you talking about?

You know that modern fighters can do every combat related task without the pilots hands leaving the throttle and stick? You know why right? It's so that they don't have to worry about doing a bunch of crazy shit when shit gets real.

In this regard it will be no different from an FC3 plane. Here is the difference though: Something like the F-18 will have full access to all of the tools the actual aircraft has. Datalink, target sharing, etc.

Su-27 pilots can't use half the shit in their plane. They can turn the radar on, lock a guy, and shoot. After a week of learning, the full fidelity pilot will have the advantage. In that first couple days? Yeah FC3 will probably win because its easy.
>>
>>183034215
>What the fuck are you talking about?
Isn't it obvious? That M2000 player has to worry about actual problems associated with his aircraft because it's a full fidelity fighter with all the quirks and downsides of the real thing.
>You know that modern fighters can do every combat related task without the pilots hands leaving the throttle and stick?
I can do the same thing on my HOTAS controller flying any plane in the game. So what?
>In this regard it will be no different from an FC3 plane. Here is the difference though: Something like the F-18 will have full access to all of the tools the actual aircraft has. Datalink, target sharing, etc.
Which is what we need more of. We need good planes that can wipe the floor with the kiddy planes because their complexity opens the door for more tools for the pilot.
We don't have that right now because all the full fidelity fighters can't hold a candle to the simplified fighters.
>In that first couple days? Yeah FC3 will probably win because its easy.
*months
Even if the hornet came out tomorrow,ow, it would take ages for someone to figure out ways to counter the FC3 planes simply because the hornet is going to be following the rules of the actual plane while the same tactics the FC3 fighters have made wouldn't have changed. People will still be flying at treetop level to avoid enemies who fart Aim-120s everywhere, and the plane will likely not be able to adapt because these are tactics made for the FC3 fighters. That's just the optimum way to play them because of the simplifications involved.

The F-14, maybe. I don't see the F-18 sweeping the multiplayer arena by storm like people are saying it's going to.
>>
>>183034631
>player has to worry about actual problems associated with his aircraft because it's a full fidelity fighter with all the quirks and downsides of the real thing
Seriously, what are you talking about? You act like the full fidelity fighters are some tower of cards that can come crashing down the moment you press the wrong button. What quirks and downsides? 2-3 extra button presses? Having to warm the radar up on the ground?
>I can do the same thing on my HOTAS controller flying any plane in the game. So what?
Yeah, that's the fucking point of HOTAS. I promise you just about everyone flying the Mirage 2000 has everything important bound to their HOTAS, so its no different than the FC3 planes doing the same thing. Its combat essential stuff that's mapped there. Combat essential stuff is the ONLY thing modeled in FC3 planes.
>all the full fidelity fighters can't hold a candle to the simplified fighters
Because the F-15 and SU-27 are the two main fighters for FC3, they will ALWAYS be some of the best in the game. Those are arguably the two best 4th gen air superiority fighters in the world. Full fidelity modules will struggle to fight them because of those planes capabilities, not because they are simplified.
>hornet is going to be following the rules of the actual plane while the same tactics the FC3 fighters have made wouldn't have changed
What? What do the FC3 planes do that "goes against the rules of an actual plane"? Nothing stops the full fidelity hornet from doing the same meme shit 10 feet off the ground dodging missiles.

And why the fuck do you think the F-14 will be more effective than the F-18 lmfao. I think you need to lurk more and learn some shit before posting dumb shit. F-14 will have AIM-7's and AIM-54's.

F-18 will have AIM-120's and AIM-9X's with helmet mounted sight, more advanced radar and datalink, better flight dynamics, etc.
>>
>>183033703
>in a sim? this is completely on the map maker to "balance". As far as I'm concerned FM and avionics should be correct as close as possible.
In FC3, this seemed to never be a real concern, considering they can spin to win to defeat any missile and pull 25G no problem and fly at the edge of death for the pilot for minutes at times no problem either.
>>

Literally not what I said at all, but okay.

>Combat essential stuff is the ONLY thing modeled in FC3 planes.
Which is why they're easier to fly, is my point.

>Because the F-15 and SU-27 are the two main fighters for FC3, they will ALWAYS be some of the best in the game.
Which is why ED should have decided if DCS was going to go the FC3 route or go the full fidelity fighter route.
There is no reason to charge sixty dollars for modules that are inferior in multiplayer but can't be grouped in any other generation but the FC3 generation unless they want to keep pretending DCS is a fully-fidelity game. They want the best of both worlds and it has soured a lot of the multiplayer.
Ideally, campaign designers should take that into account. They never do because they're under the impression that this makes sense. It just makes sense for cartoonish planes to go head-to-head with people who have to deal with the real thing.

>And why the fuck do you think the F-14 will be more effective than the F-18
I've lurked way more than you, and the F-14 will have the Phoenix. That alone puts it way better than the FC3 planes because their primary advantage right now is reach. That's why all of them fly as low as they do. Fuck, get it together.

>F-18 will have AIM-120's
Like the FC3 fighter, the one with the goofy AIM-120s,
>with helmet mounted sight, more advanced radar and datalink
A legitimate positive, but no guarantee that it can compete with the FC3 planes considering how much simpler they are when it comes to both of those things. Do you want to do datalink management while your opponent is farting amraams at you?

> better flight dynamics, etc.
*more accurate flight dynamics
We don't know if that's a positive yet. It's not going to be as forgiving as the FC3 planes, if that's what you mean.
>>
>>183035165
This.
It's why FC3 will still kick the shit out of modern aircraft until we start getting into the Stealth era.

Why people are having such a hard time grasping this simple truth is beyond me. You couldn't have played a multiplayer server with every F-15 and su-27 slot filled out and not see the problem here.

You and that other guy have clearly never flown the su27 its has the most realistic fm currently ingame. It has very realistic stress damage for all the parts its not an easy plane to fly well aince you can kill yourself very easily and also its gimped more than half of the datalink systems dont exist the rwr work better irl and ecm options simmilar to the a10s.

Its funny people say hurr durr clicky realism is most realism but the mirage is still a fucking ufo that does things that dont seem possible. Because its fm is made from bms guesstimations.
Its engine is just waay to powerful for something from the 80s and 90s.

Sometimes i feel like dcs devs could make an ace combat fm
give it clicky cockpit and people would call it the most realistic thing ever.

Pretty sure they can't provide EM graphs for their own modules. Since you more or less can work backwards from them.
BMS was a "safe" option they went for to show their plane capability without actually exposing their own data. unless they of course used bms data,
then they're retarded
>>
>>183054869
They did use BMS data, because the plane is so super sekrit it's baguette sekrit, not even the flight profile is known.
