Is it just me, or was ODST a missed opportunity? The idea of a lone soldier waking up in an occupied rainy city at night, hunted by an army and guided by a malfunctioning AI, is absolutely GOAT. But the final product feels like they gave up with the experimental direction and just made regular filler Halo missions. Even the gameplay mechanics ended up aping Halos 1-3, despite the promise of a more vulnerable protagonist. I wish the whole thing had been Rookie exploring nighttime New Mombassa and putting the plot together himself. No flashbacks interrupting the ambience, no brash squadmates with caricature personalities, and ideally a shitload more neon.

Everything that Bungie has ever approved is canonical. But even then, certain things trump others. In order of canonical influence:

- The games rank first
- Published materials (books, comics, soundtrack liner notes etc.) rank second
- Marketing and PR materials third

And there's one codicil: the more recent items trump the older ones. So, for example, if some aspect of Halo 3's fiction contradicted Halo 2's, Halo 3's would be the gold standard.

Bungie doesn't like to retcon (i.e., deliberately change previously established facts), but sometimes it's necessary. Take for example the issue of the number of human worlds. The truth about the "800+" number? That was made up by a non-Bungie employee and never approved by us before the Halo: CE promotional website went live.

As for some of the other issues raised, chiefly Jenkins' age and UNSC foot-dragging on fielding the BR55? I will only say that some marines have spent a very long time in cryo-sleep and that putting an entirely new weapon into service during a war -- especially a war that spans multiple star systems -- is no small order.

That being said, I'm constantly impressed by how close attention you all pay to the details. Don't ever stop keeping us honest! And we'll do our best to keep you reliably entertained :-)

It's exceptionally short and unremarkable. There's really nothing nice I xan say about it outside of it showing a lot of enemy diversity for a first level.

This is the only level in any Halo game to date where enemies seemingly infinitely respawn and it just comes across as so painstakingly. It's very noticable and I can't decry it enough. Maybe if Bungie had been more selective about how it's done it would have fared better, for me at least.

>3. Enemy Lines
Does this even count as a whole level? It's absurdly short and probably the most exploitable level in the series after Halo 4's Shutdown. The term "sprint by everything" gets thrown around a lot but here you don't even have to be a seasoned speedrunner to pull it off. Then there's the only memerable part of this level: the kraken. The kraken is a failed attempt to reimagine the scarab but "lol so much bigger!" Yeah, and uglier, and less intimidating. Nothing about this thing is challenging or threatening, and once it goes down you wonder why the CPU friendlies didn't just all jump on it and kill it.

>2. The Breaking
Greetings, traveler! Lost, scared, confused? Please remain calm. We heard you liked prometheans and straight lines, so we modeled an wntire level like that (one of the only 3 with blue team in the game) and even included more Warden bullet sponges to shoot at! But don't worry, you can skip them.

This level sucks. Everything about it sucks. It has that old dated CE/2 feel where you keep getting locked in areas and having to hold off against waves and waves of the same enemies, only now it's even worse because it's just promethean soldiers and crawlers en masse literally spawning in front of your eyes over and over again. You do get some vehicles at one point, but it doesn't make the mission more fun, just possibly shorter. Mistakes were made, especially here.

Yeah. 343 gauges how to make their games by sticking an antenna into the current ternding public popular shooters and running with them.
With Halo 4 it was Call of Duty. When that backfired they tried to recapture the play of old Halo but were not willing to give up on COD pandering, it's just the pandering bacame largely more transparent and cosmetic (though not entirely).
Halo 6 therefore has 2 likely directions. It can try to go the "hero shooter" route, or it can take note on the populafity of Halo 3 backwards comlatibility, installation 01, and the halo 3 playlist in 5 coming up and scale things back to more resemble the original trilogy (mostly halo 3 though).
They have no doubt talen note at how popular greenskull's 2 videos on the matter have become. And the development on H6 without any updates at all at E3 for the first time in over a decade suggest massive changes in direction for the next installment.

Halo 3s Ranked playlists in general were ruthless, I agree though lone wolves was probably the roughest. One of the things you will immidiately notice is how much bigger the average size of Halo maps are in 3 compared to 2. What we would consider a "small" map in 2 (Lockout, Foundation, Midship, Ivory Tower, Beaver Creek) is really only comparable to a single map that launched with Halo 3. That being Guardian. All the rest of the maps that you will find in the Lone Wolves playlists are perhaps small for Halo 3 standards, but comparable to Halo 2 come across as more middle sized. The Pit, Construct, and Epitaph are noticably larger than Guardian. Snowbound and Isolation have vehicles on them even. Even Last Resort, which doesn't appear in lone wolves but for argument sake I'm bringing it up, is roughly twice the size of Zanzibar in Halo 2.
I believe it is this larger map size (along with the obvious absence of a sprint function) that makes the 6 player free for all in Halo 3 feel much more skill-based and less RNG. You have a much better chance of encountering individual players than large groups all in one firefight. That's why if you lose in lone wolves, it has a lot more to do with losing too many 1 on 1s rather than not leeching enough kills from already ongoing 1 on 1s. It's pressuring, but it's at least mostly skill based.
This is another example of why sprint I would argue ruins the dichotomy of free for all in Halo 5. Most of your encounters there will include more than one spartan at once. Still skill based? Absolutely, but much less so.

I've seen it said more recently in Halo threads that Halo needs to either drop sprint completely or fully adopt it to be a central mechanic that would completely change up the game.
