I love a lot of the solo instances. The Lancer one where your idiot Duskwight buddy BLINDS YOU AND HIMSELF and then FUCKS OFF is probably my favourite in terms of "What is even fucking happening?!"
Most if not all the MCH ones are great and I'm quite fond of the ridiculous level 70 solo fight. DRK 50 is a brilliant capstone to the entire arc. I could go on.

But my absolute favourite is just the WoL and Alphinaud versus two of the Heaven's Ward. How that builds up and plays out is just fantastic, and the start of HW's buddy-story which I'm very fond of.

Crafting will make you rich if you're willing to put in a ridiculous amount of work initially. If you're lucky you can find someone nice enough to power level a few of your crafters but you only have so many leves to spend. If you don't have any gil to spend, start with gathering classes and then do crafting once you get them to 70. Ideally you want to have all crafters maxed but specialize in two or three for the majority of your income and use the others to make your own materials and minimizing cost. If you do this you can drop gathering all together because you get so much return on your base materials and you don't spend hours gathering them yourself. Based on my experience with other players I'd say 5 million is a lot of gil. Not many people are willing to craft because like I said it's a lot of work initially and while gathering can make you rich you're basically screwing yourself and making other people rich unless you're botting.

A few of those millions are from some arbitrary craftings but essentially I only gathered and that I did very leisurely but smart. Theoretically could have made thrice that. I'm also on Gilgamesh, the raiding World, so people pay through the nose for materials and then imagine the cost of made products.
"A lot of gil" depends on your World. I imagine fifty million is a shit-load on Balmung while my wallet on Gilgamesh is kinda poor.
The secret is in the patches. With all my Disciples of Hand are max level and in the best equipment, when 3.2 rolled in it introduced a bunch of new materials to gather as well as blueprints for new content (I think it was Midas). I made forty million from that patch alone.
